Chapter 125

Dialogue Density

Chapter 125 Dialogue Density

Unlike many action movies that have almost no viewing threshold, there is factual basis to say that it has no viewing threshold.

In the 1990s, watching movies in video parlors was extremely popular in the East China region, a period commonly known as the "video parlor era".

At that time, in order to maximize revenue, video arcades in mainland China generally adopted a business model of playing different films in combination for all-night sessions.

Action movies were the most popular genre of Hong Kong films at the time, so they became the top choice for the first half of the night.

"Dialogue density?"

Nicole was hearing this term for the first time. Although she knew what it meant immediately, she still asked curiously, "Does this also have anything to do with the movie viewing experience?"

"It's related, and very closely so."

When the dialogue density is too high, a large amount of information is output in a short period of time, and the audience's brain cannot process it in time. According to relevant audiovisual cognitive tests, after deviating from the reasonable dialogue density range, the audience's information absorption efficiency per episode will decrease by 19%-33%, and it is easy to lose focus and miss key plot points.

Moreover, movies are not novels. Excessive dialogue density will crowd out the narrative proportion of visuals, actions, and details. Content that could have been conveyed through camera language is now delivered entirely through dialogue, completely dissolving the audiovisual immersion of film art and even causing viewers to experience a feeling of "oxygen deprivation" while watching a movie.

If the dense dialogue is interspersed with a large amount of technical jargon and multi-line character conversations, the average viewer is likely to...

It's difficult to quickly sort out the logical relationships.

So what do you consider to be high-density and what do you consider to be low-density?

A dialogue with more than 120 words per minute is considered high density.

Dialogue with fewer than 80 words per minute is considered low density. Low-density dialogue often means that there is a high proportion of blank space, action, and cinematic narrative. For example, in most classic action and disaster films, the amount of dialogue drops significantly in the second half to match the viewing pace of the general audience.

However, the score shouldn't be too low, as that would lower the quality of the dramatic scenes.

The most typical example is Tony Jaa's movies, which have almost no dialogue, and even if they do, they are basically all about an elephant.

Especially his movie "Tom Yum Goong 2: The King of Fighters", it was too outrageous. The total length of the movie was only close to 100 minutes, and the male lead probably fought for about 80 minutes.

The actors may not be tired from fighting, but the audience is probably tired from watching.

Wu Jing's "The Swordsman" also has this problem in terms of plot. The total length of the film is 126 minutes, and the action scenes seem to exceed one hour. Although the proportion is not as exaggerated as "Tom Yum Goong 2", it is still a bit too high.

Although the genre is martial arts, there still needs to be some basic dialogue and background. At the very least, the reason why they are fighting must be explained. Otherwise, the emotional immersion of the audience will be affected.

However, it is said that the actress who played Ayuya in the original version had an accident, which forced the film to be reshot urgently. The original initial cut of the film was said to be 150 minutes long, but it could only be cut down to 126 minutes, which affected the narrative space of the dialogue scenes.

"According to your logic, the dialogue density of a normal movie should fall somewhere in between?"

The two had finished their meal and left the restaurant.

Nicole was lying lazily on her side on the bed, her upper body slightly raised, one elbow resting steadily on the silver patterned pillow beside her, her palm naturally supporting the back of her head, fully displaying the lines of her shoulders and neck.

"Hmm, is this the kind of topic we should be discussing right now?"

"Answer me first," Nicole said, gently turning her hips to the side. One leg stretched out naturally into the distance, toes outstretched, bare foot lightly resting on the edge of the bed. Nicole's other leg was slightly bent and tucked to her side, her entire body weight completely shifted onto the soft bed.

"After answering this question, we can discuss other things."

"Yes, that's the dialogue density of a normal movie —"

David had no choice but to suppress his restless heart for the time being, responding with his mouth while taking in his surroundings with his eyes.

Beneath her was a large, soft bed covered with off-white bedding. Beside her was a silver-gray throw pillow with a subtle pattern and sheen. Behind the headboard was a Chinese-style enclosed bed frame with a semi-transparent gauze canopy. Soft gauze curtains hung on both sides, and warm light spilled out from one side, creating an atmosphere that was both intimate and sophisticated.

A metallic tray sits on the low table in front of the bed, holding a bottle of green champagne and two stemmed champagne glasses, creating an exquisite and luxurious atmosphere.

"Have you even prepared the alcohol?"

David picked up a wine glass in surprise and said, "This was originally part of the hotel suite."

"It must have always been there."

Nicole said lazily, "But I did take it out of the cabinet, so you can also think of it as something I prepared."

"The clothes... surely they weren't originally provided in the hotel room?"

What do you think?

Well, that's really unlikely. The other person was wearing a pure black see-through deep V-neck long-sleeved nightgown. The fabric was thin and sheer, and the style was cool and sexy, which suited her temperament very well.

Nicole has a striking and voluptuous figure with a mature and sophisticated look. Her shoulders and neck have clear and smooth contours, her legs are long and well-proportioned, and her leg muscles are smooth and defined. The proportions from her thighs to her ankles are excellent, and her skin has a delicate glow under warm light.

"You made a reservation in advance after I told you the restaurant's location last night?"

David walked over silently and asked.

Nicole, supporting her upper body with her elbows, tilted her head slightly back, facing David standing to her left, her eyes slightly provocative.

Her long legs appeared exceptionally long and shapely under the warm yellow light, with full and firm thighs, smooth calves, and slender ankles. The slit design of her black lace nightgown exposed a large area of her leg skin, forming a beautiful arc from her thighs to her toes.

"Yeah, isn't that thoughtful?"

Nicole laughed, "Even your clothes are your favorite styles?"

"You knew I wasn't going home tonight?"

"I don't know, but I don't believe you'd be willing to go back now?"

Yes, she's right. David definitely wouldn't choose to go back at this time.

Because she had already lifted her leg, one foot extended forward, toes spread and lightly touching the ground, the arch of her foot forming a beautiful curve. As her ankle rotated, the muscles in her calf tightened slightly, and the other leg bent and brought together, her feet interlaced on the clean white bed, her toes painted with dark nail polish, making them particularly eye-catching.

David reached out and grasped one of his ankles. "You guessed it, I really am not going back."

Will this interfere with your work tomorrow?

Nicole sat up slightly, tilted her head back, looked directly at David who was standing, and spread her legs naturally.

"No, I'll just get up earlier."

By this time, she was completely lying back against the pillow, her neck stretched out, her chest rising and falling, and her knees slightly raised and apart. Her thighs were full, her calves were tucked in, and her toes were naturally relaxed and slightly spread, pointing towards the foot of the bed, creating an open and inviting posture.

"Why don't you take a nap?" Nicole asked, sitting deep in a high-backed armchair, her body completely back and almost swallowed by the chair back.

Because the exercise had exhausted almost all of her strength, she was sitting very casually.
