Chapter 8
Shooting Stealth Planes
The Air Force Commander inspected the Donghai Air Base.
With the investigation into Chen Hai's accident now concluded, the leader's visit was both an inspection and a gesture of sympathy.
We can no longer hide the news of Chen Hai's accident from Lin Yanna; the family's cooperation is needed for the subsequent publicity and commendation efforts.
But no one expected that Li Lu would actually voice his opposition in front of the leader.
Everyone was stunned, and the leaders of the 3rd Air Division were so frightened that their faces turned pale.
Before everyone could react, Xu Hailiang forcibly dragged Li Lusheng out of the meeting room.
He dragged Li Lu downstairs to a secluded spot and yelled, "You fucking don't want to work here anymore? If it's a decision made by the flight attendant management, even if you have objections, you should raise them through the proper channels. What are you spouting nonsense about?"
Li Lu glared angrily at Xu Hailiang, spitting out each word, "You promised me that you wouldn't let Lin Yanna know about Hai Ge's accident before she gave birth to the child! You promised me!"
Xu Hailiang was furious. "Things have changed. Now that the investigation is clear, Chen Hai is a hero who defended our country. Every single thing that happened afterward involved his family!"
"This is a good thing for the families of martyrs, you know that!"
"Even if you had objections, you shouldn't have brought them up in that kind of situation!"
Xu Hailiang gasped for breath and began to ramble on, "I've been too lenient with you usually. It's one thing if we don't hold it against you normally, but what time and place is this? In the end, it's all because I spoiled you. It's my fault, my fault, it's all my fault, it's all my fault..."
Li Lu snapped out of his daze and said, "What nonsense are you spouting? One person does the deed and takes responsibility for it. It's none of your business."
"You!" Xu Hailiang was so angry that his chest felt tight.
Suddenly, he turned and shouted to the duty officer on the first floor, "Hey soldier! Hey soldier! Go and call the military police over here!"
"Yes, sir!" The duty officer ran towards the disciplinary team in a panic.
Before long, a squad leader from the disciplinary team arrived with a soldier.
Xu Hailiang pointed at Li Lu, "Lock him up! He's not allowed to go anywhere without my orders!"
"This..." The disciplinary squad leader was stunned.
Is Guan Liu Ge in solitary confinement?
What kind of fun is this?
It's true that Sixth Brother often criticizes his superiors, but he gets along well with ordinary officers and soldiers, especially the lower-ranking soldiers. Everyone respects him, and besides, Sixth Brother has never made any major mistakes.
"Are you deaf?!" Xu Hailiang roared.
The disciplinary squad leader shuddered, "Yes, sir!"
But he didn't make a move; he didn't dare to!
Li Lu snorted coldly at Xu Hailiang, then strode towards the inner dormitory area. The disciplinary squad leader could only follow with his soldiers, one on each side, not like an escort, but more like a guard.
After walking for a while, the disciplinary squad leader whispered, "Sixth Brother, the solitary confinement cell is over by the auditorium."
Li Lu said without looking at him, "I'll go back to my dorm. Just report the truth. Don't make things difficult for me."
"This..." the disciplinary squad leader said with a wry smile, "Yes, I understand."
In the conference room of the government building, the leader didn't say anything, and Li Lu's objection on the spot was treated as if it had never happened.
The leader visited Chen Hai's family as scheduled to offer condolences, and subsequent work is progressing steadily.
Li Lu did not return to his own dormitory, but stayed in Chen Hai's dormitory instead.
Chen Hai is the deputy captain and lives in a single room with a standard layout, with a balcony and a washroom at the far end.
Even though he settled down in the county town, Chen Hai didn't have much time to go back throughout the year, spending much more time in the dormitory.
The dormitory was arranged as it was before Chen Hai's last takeoff.
Li Lu sat down at his desk, looked up at the disciplinary squad leader standing guard outside the door, and said, "You can go back now."
The platoon leader hesitated, "Sixth Brother, I need to leave a soldier here to keep watch."
Li Lu nodded.
The platoon leader whispered to the soldier, "You stay here and keep watch. I'll have someone come and relieve you after we eat."
"Yes!" The guard stood outside the door like a guardian spirit.
Li Lu gradually calmed down and began to sort through Chen Hai's belongings.
Chen Hai's belongings are simple, mostly technical books and work notes. During his more than ten years in the military and nearly a thousand flight hours, Chen Hai filled ten notebooks with his work notes.
Li Lu slowly flipped through the books one by one.
From tactics and strategies to flight techniques, from the technical characteristics of the J-6 fighter jet to the practical application experience of the J-7 fighter jet equipped with the PL-2 air-to-air missile...
In his last work notebook, Li Lu was surprised to find the words "F-22".
He subconsciously straightened up, took out a cigarette, lit it, and read down the words one by one.
After more than half an hour and smoking half a pack of cigarettes, Li Lu let out a long sigh.
Chen Hai had already begun researching how to counter the F-22. He was very clear that the strongest opponent in the future was the F-22—the world's first stealth fighter, and at the time, the only one.
Given the current equipment level of the People's Liberation Army Air Force, how can it counter the F-22?
Chen Hai's thinking was based on using existing equipment to fight, but all the methods he envisioned only existed in theory.
Perhaps this is one of the reasons why Chen Hai risked his life to capture images of the F-22.
Li Lu stayed in Chen Hai's dormitory for three days.
Before leaving the East China Sea Air Base, the commander said to the leaders of the 3rd Air Division, "It's normal for young people to be energetic. The military needs such young cadres, and as leaders, we should understand and cherish them."
With just this one sentence, Li Lu was released from confinement.
When Xu Hailiang saw Li Lu again, he couldn't help but exclaim in surprise, "Hey, you look much more composed. These three days of confinement have been quite effective."
Li Lu said in a deep voice, "Brother Hai has been studying how to counter the F-22 for a long time. He has written down many ideas in his work notes."
"Chief of Staff, that dark shape is definitely an F-22."
"Although there is no news of this aircraft entering service, we cannot rule out the possibility that the Americans sent it over for actual combat test flights."
"According to their published development progress, the F-22 has now entered the operational flight test phase."
"I think it's possible that they were secretly sent to use us as practice targets."
After a pause, Li Lu sat down, took the notebook and pen from in front of Xu Hailiang, and drew the last flight of Chen Hai on the spot, saying, "Brother Hai did a pitching-up maneuver with the belly of the plane at the end."
"Then, Hai Ge fired seventeen shells, and it was at that moment that the shooting camera captured the dark figure."
"I carefully compared the shape of the F-22 prototype with the silhouette of the black shadow I photographed."
Xu Hailiang asked, "What do you want to do? I know you have your own ideas."
Li Lu asked, "I'd like to set up an experimental group in our squadron to study how to fight stealth fighters."
Xu Hailiang raised his eyebrows slightly and fell into thought.
After a long while, Li Lu couldn't help but ask, "Chief of Staff, is it going to work or not? Don't just stay silent."
Xu Hailiang remained silent, opened a drawer, took out a document, and handed it to Li Lu, saying, "I originally came to check on your recovery before talking to you, but it seems you're recovering quite well."
"The Air Force Command has been conducting related research for a while now, and has decided to carry out pilot studies in our 3rd and 2nd Divisions to brainstorm and explore tactics for fighting stealth aircraft. You are the only one who has engaged in combat with what appears to be an F-22, so the division has decided to assign this task to our regiment."
The regimental commander is still in the hospital. Xu Hailiang is currently in charge of military affairs for the 7th Air Regiment and is basically going to take over the position of regimental commander.
"This task is entrusted to you."
Li Lu quickly finished reading the document and his spirits lifted.
It turns out the higher-ups were already making preparations.
Xu Hailiang said, "First, select personnel. You can choose anyone from the entire Seventh Regiment. Second, figure out how to start, write an outline, and solidify the theory first before implementing it."
"Also, your training can't fall behind. Don't forget, you're just getting started with low-temperature weather and day/night cycles, so don't think you're all that great."
Li Lu raised his chin and replied, "Please rest assured, Chief of Staff!"
