Chapter 23
Her Husband
Shen Yi: "I asked you what you're doing here."
Yan Xu felt much more at ease as she touched the jewelry box inside the bag through its outer shell: "I need to get something."
So it wasn't a date with that man.
Shen Yi asked excitedly, "What is it?"
Yan Xu coldly replied, "It's none of your business, you don't need to know."
There's no need to tell him too much about her family situation.
"Oh." Shen Yi was already used to her rejections, and comforted himself, "It must be because I rejected too many girls in the past, so they sent you to teach me a lesson."
Yan Xu, ever gossipy, asked, "Do you have a lot of girls pursuing you?"
"Of course." Shen Yi was quite confident in himself. "People ask me for my WeChat when I'm walking down the street."
Yan Xu was somewhat puzzled: "If that's the case, why did you go on a blind date and agree to marry me?"
Shen Yi didn't know how to answer, but luckily the doctor had just finished disinfecting.
Shen Yi pretended not to hear and changed the subject: "It's done, let's go."
The two left the clinic one after the other. As the doctor watched them leave, he thought to himself, "This man looks so familiar, I feel like I've seen him somewhere before."
This wasn't Shen Yi's first time in this neighborhood. Besides townhouses, there were also detached villas; he owned one of his detached properties here.
Yan Xu turned around and saw that he was walking very slowly, so he slowed down as well: "I'm going to the train station later, you can take a taxi home by yourself."
Everyone goes back to their homes.
Shen Yi grabbed her hand: "I'm also going back to Yunzhao County. Why don't we go together? We're going the same way anyway."
"Didn't you just go back to the city?" Yan Xu sensed that he was lying. "You don't need to come back to Yunzhao County with me."
Shen Yi released his hand and explained, "The matter is settled. There's nothing to do here. Let's go, let's take the train together."
He didn't give her a chance to refuse.
I immediately took a taxi to the train station and booked a ticket on the way there. Luckily, there was one ticket left.
On the way, Yan Xu asked him, "Where's your luggage? I remember you took your luggage."
Shen Yi: "It's not important."
It mainly contained famous watches and luxury jewelry, all of which were bought secretly at night.
He used to be a recognized trendsetter. New watches and jewelry would always be checked by him first, and only after he had made his selection would others get a turn.
He just didn't have the chance to wear them while he was in Yunzhao County, and they were just gathering dust in the hardware store. He took the opportunity to bring them home.
The two got off the taxi smoothly, waited for their tickets, and boarded the train.
It was already dark outside the window. Yan Xu asked him, "Are you hungry? There's food on the train."
Shen Yi was pleasantly surprised: "You can eat on a train?"
This was only the second time he had taken a train; previously, he had always traveled by driver or private plane.
"Yes." Yan Xu was curious about his past life; he didn't even know this basic fact. "You didn't used to travel by train?"
"..." Just what she feared most came to pass. Shen Yi had a sudden inspiration, his lips curving slightly, and a gentle smile flowed into her eyes. "Curious about me? If you want to know, you can move back in and live with me."
"..."
Yan Xu pushed him away and looked away.
Outside the window, there was the sound of water droplets pattering against the car window.
The speed gradually increased, and the quiet carriage became noisy due to the sound of rain.
Yan Xu looked out the window as the train sped along, the scenery outside blurring: "It's raining."
I didn't bring an umbrella.
Shen Yi slowly said, "I have an umbrella, I'm not afraid."
I checked the weather in Yunzhao County when I went out today. Luckily, I brought it with me, though it was just a small pocket umbrella, only big enough for Yan Xu to use by himself.
Upon hearing that he had an umbrella, Yan Xu suspected that this person could read minds.
I just happen to know what she's thinking.
After getting off the train, Shen Yi held an umbrella for her, leaving most of his body exposed to the rain, and ran to the taxi stand.
Yan Xu quickly got into the car: "Hurry up and get in."
Shen Yi followed closely behind.
The rain was so heavy that his clothes were soaked through after only half a minute of running.
Driver: "Where to?"
Yan Xu gave the address.
Following the route back, the driver will first pass through her current neighborhood before heading to the rented apartment where the two of them used to live.
On the way, the two were quiet, each playing on their own phones, until Yan Xu got out of the car at the entrance of the residential area.
Shen Yi: "Send me a message when you get back, and I'll take the umbrella."
Yan Xu declined, saying, "No need, I'll just run there."
As soon as Yan Xu got off the bus, she ran into Zheng Luoxuan, who was on his way home. Zheng Luoxuan recognized her as Yan Xu and offered to hold his umbrella for her.
Suddenly, the rain stopped falling on her head. Yan Xu looked up and found an umbrella over her head.
Yan Xu turned his head, and upon seeing who it was, his expression darkened. He moved away slightly and said, "No need."
"Neighbors should help each other out," Zheng Luoxuan persisted. "We're going the same way anyway, let's go together."
Just as Yan Xu was about to refuse, another umbrella pushed Zheng Luoxuan's umbrella aside, and Shen Yi put his arm around Yan Xu: "What's up?"
Having missed his chance to strike up a conversation, Zheng Luoxuan impatiently asked, "Who are you?!"
Shen Yi puffed out her chest and said confidently, "Her husband."
Upon hearing this, Yan Xu and Zheng Luoxuan both looked at him.
This was the first time she had ever heard him say the word "husband".
It would be difficult to get her to say "his wife" voluntarily.
Zheng Luoxuan, his face flushed with embarrassment, nodded and bowed his head apologetically: "I'm sorry, I apologize for disturbing you."
Finally, as he walked away, he couldn't help but mutter a sarcastic remark about Yan Xu: "You have a husband, yet you still hide under my umbrella, you scumbag woman."
"..."
I've seen plenty of people who turn the tables on others, but his shamelessness is rare.
"Let's go, I'll walk you upstairs." Shen Yi put his arm around her shoulder and walked into the residential area.
Yan Xu broke free from his arm: "You go back, I'll go up myself."
Shen Yi: "If you don't want that man to continue harassing you, let me come up with you so he won't get suspicious."
Yan Xu hesitated. She was indeed annoyed by that man, but she had moved out to keep her distance from Shen Yi. If she let him come to her house now, wouldn't all her efforts be in vain?
"Stop thinking about it, your little brain will short-circuit if you keep thinking like that." Shen Yi didn't let her dwell on it and simply put his arm around her and walked forward.
Perhaps because of the rain, or perhaps because her mind was in a mess, Yan Xu let him hug her and forgot to break free.
The rare display of intimacy made Shen Yi want to linger a little longer, much longer.
He held her close until they got on and off the elevator, only letting go when Yan Xu opened the door.
The new rental apartment was very empty, even emptier than the one he had seen her living in. There wasn't even a water glass on the table, and the kitchen was brand new, without any cooking utensils.
Shen Yi: "Didn't you finish moving your things? Cups, kitchenware, and some appliances you bought yourself."
Yan Xu took out a bottle of mineral water from the refrigerator: "You can keep those. I'll go buy more tomorrow. It's too much trouble to move them around."
"You refuse to use my things at all costs, but you're very generous when it comes to using yours," Shen Yi complained. "It's a classic case of 'the soldiers can set fires, but the common people can't even light a lamp.'"
Yan Xu smiled slightly: "Okay, I'll move tomorrow."
Shen Yi was even more unhappy now.
"When are you going back?" Yan Xu asked. "I have a big umbrella here, you can take it."
Shen Yi glanced out the window; the rain showed no signs of letting up, and thunder rumbled incessantly. "I feel like I can't go back. It's hard to get a taxi. Could I borrow your sofa to sleep on for the night?"
He wasn't sure if Yan Xu would agree.
Yan Xu looked out the window, then at his wet clothes: "Okay, I have a clean bathrobe for you to borrow. Wash and dry your clothes later, so you don't catch a cold."
Yan Xu seems a little different tonight.
Shen Yi stared at her, remaining silent.
"Is there something on my face?" Yan Xu touched his face. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
Shen Yi shook his head: "You've changed. You wouldn't have agreed to let me stay before."
She couldn't wait for him to leave, preferably not even stepping over the threshold.
"..."
I thought he was going to say something.
Yan Xu pointed to his clothes and said calmly, "It's my fault that you got caught in the rain. If you catch a cold, it's my fault."
"Oh." Shen Yi only listened to what she wanted to hear. "You're still concerned about me, afraid I'll get sick."
