Chapter 7

Clues

Brent clutched the silver coin tightly and whispered, "Sir, if you don't want to pick up something strange, don't eat fish lately."

Why?

"Because lately we've been catching some fish—no, I should say they're not fish!" The boy's eyes held a fear beyond his years.

"My uncle works in the cold storage at the dock, and he said the things they've caught recently... have things that humans have, like fingers..."

Lu Yuan's pupils contracted slightly. A finger? This instantly reminded him of Dr. Leisen, who had been dragged into darkness.

"And..." Brent swallowed, "even when those 'fish' were chopped up, the pieces of meat were still jumping around. Even so, big shots still bought them back at high prices."

"Who's buying?" Lu Yuan squinted, listening intently.

"I don't know, my uncle didn't tell me..."

"Brent, I'll remember what you said." Lu Yuan nodded, indicating that he had remembered.

"Yes, sir! And I assure you, every gentleman who shines shoes at my stall will know that Leisen Clinic has reopened."

After speaking, the boy thought for a moment and asked, "Sir, is the Leisen Clinic you mentioned Dr. Leisen's clinic?"

"That's right, Dr. Leisen won't be back anytime soon. I've been entrusted to take over the clinic for a while."

Lu Yuan nodded and placed the silver shield into the boy's money box.

"Alright, I'm going to take a walk around Grim. Remember what you promised me."

Seeing Lu Yuan stand up, the boy quickly stepped forward and counted out a bronze shield.

"Doctor, wait, you're Dr. Lyson's friend, so you're our friend too. Dr. Lyson always gets a 50% discount with us, and this is the information fee..."

The boy stepped forward, carrying a small bag of bronze shields, and said...

Lu Yuan saw a hint of reluctance flash in the boy's eyes, but he still stubbornly handed over the bronze shield, and smiled.

"Lyson seems to be doing quite well around here; he has all sorts of friends."

"But you can keep the bronze shield. Remember to send a copy of the newspaper to Leisen Clinic every day from now on. Goodbye."

As he spoke, Lu Yuan left the boy's stall and continued walking along the bluestone street.

[You've learned some hidden details; current status of Grimport: 9/50]

The sudden appearance of this experience bar confirms what Brent said: there have indeed been unusual occurrences in that sea recently.

But this is not something that Lu Yuan, a mere "fake" doctor, can handle.

At this time, the sun was already high overhead, and rickshaws occasionally passed by on the streets. The porters below had already taken a break, leaving only a few small boats moored in the harbor.

Lu Yuan walked along the bluestone path to the end and finally saw a bakery. He couldn't help but swallow his saliva when he smelled the aroma in the air.

"Finally, I can eat something."

A few minutes later.

Lu Yuan spent a silver shield, which was almost a quarter of his previous income, to buy two white breads that could barely be called "food" from the bakery, as well as a large piece of black bread that was as hard as a brick.

"Damn prices." Lu Yuan took a bite of white bread, his heart aching.

This made Lu Yuan realize the purchasing power of this world's currency, and at the same time, it made Lu Yuan feel a sense of urgency.

Make money quickly, upgrade your medical skills, and figure out what kind of organization the Night's Watch is.

Finally, confirm whether the world is safe or not.

Is it all just eeriness, or was yesterday's event merely a coincidence?

Back at the clinic, a bite of freshly baked white bread brought me complete satisfaction.

After that, Lu Yuan sat down in a chair and started reading.

It wasn't until evening that new footsteps sounded outside the courtyard, interrupting Lu Yuan, who was immersed in his books.

[Basic Medicinal Herbs: 15.1/20]

The footsteps outside the courtyard were very light, sounding like a child's footsteps.

"Dr. Lu, are you there?"

A somewhat familiar voice came from outside the door.

Closing the book, Lu Yuan got up and opened the slightly ajar door.

Standing outside the door was Brent, whom I had met that morning.

Brent, who was carrying a box, saw Lu Yuan come out of the door and went up to him, saying, "Sir, these are newspapers about Grim Harbor from a while ago."

"You're new to Grimport, so you're probably not familiar with anything here. These newspapers might be useful to you."

The boy reached out and handed the box to Lu Yuan.

Lu Yuan looked at the boy in front of him with some surprise, not expecting the boy to be so thoughtful.

After thinking for a moment, Lu Yuan didn't stand on ceremony with the boy and simply reached out to take the box.

"Come in and have a seat."

Lu Yuan gestured for the boy to come inside with him first.

The boy hesitated for a moment, then waved his hand. "Sir, I have to go back first. I'm worried about leaving my sister home alone."

"I see. Please wait a moment." Lu Yuan went back to his room, retrieved a money bag containing thirty copper shields, and handed it over. "This is a token of my gratitude."

Upon seeing this, Brent quickly shook his head: "Sir, you misunderstand. I'm not delivering newspapers for your money."

"I had too many silver shields during the day, and as Dr. Lysen's friend, I'm giving you these newspapers as a thank you."

Looking at Brent's sincere eyes, Lu Yuan didn't press the issue.

He simply said, "I appreciate your kindness, and I will pay for the newspapers you deliver as usual."

"And Brent, if you need medical attention in the future, you can come to me."

Lu Yuan didn't make any promises, he just mentioned it briefly.

On the contrary, Brent couldn't help but show joy when he heard this.

Brent certainly had his own ulterior motives, but it was nothing more than delivering some newspapers that had already been sold.

If running errands really gets the attention of this new doctor, it will be easier to see a doctor in the future.

As for other places to seek medical treatment, the church's helpers are nothing but vampires. There used to be Dr. Lyson who was willing to treat patients at low prices, but now Dr. Lyson is gone.

Brent, of course, wanted to build a good relationship with the new doctor beforehand.

Of course, there are other doctors in Grim Harbor, but their prices are simply unaffordable for someone like me.

Lu Yuan could obviously see what Brent was up to, but he didn't care.

Because we might get some useful information from Brent later.

I closed the door and went back to my room.

Lu Yuan prepared to flip through the latest newspapers about Grimport.

There are some things that Lu Yuan is reluctant to ask directly.

Appearing in this small town with an Asian appearance, he was as conspicuous as a black sheep among sheep.

Moreover, he appeared out of thin air, without any basis for entering or leaving.

If the "police" of this world are willing to investigate, their excuse of being Dr. Lyson's friend will be easily exposed.

In this seemingly bizarre world, how are heretics who appear out of nowhere dealt with?

It seems that Leisen's diary has already made it clear.

Putting aside these random thoughts, under the dim light, Lu Yuan spread several newspaper clippings on the table and circled a few keywords with a red pen.
