Chapter 4
Evelyn Jensen
Chapter 4 Evelyn Jensen
The sudden call to action gave Ethan Jones a glimmer of hope as he recalled his own plans.
He decisively went downstairs, and when he arrived at the living room on the first floor, he saw a girl carrying a handbag walk into the house.
The girl wore a cloche hat, and her thick, orange-red hair flowed out and cascaded over her shoulders.
She wore a white sweatshirt with "ERA" printed on the left sleeve and "PEACE" on the right sleeve, paired with dark blue slim-fit jeans and brown and white saddle shoes.
At first glance, it gives people a feeling of being full of energy.
Seeing Thomas and Linda approaching, the girl decisively opened her arms and gave them a big hug.
"Dad! Linda! I've missed you so much!"
"We miss you too, Evelyn."
Thomas and Linda kissed the girl's cheek, openly expressing their affection.
Linda added, "Oh, Evelyn, you're back just in time. I've already prepared dinner. I made Dungeness crab and clam chowder tonight. Oh, and you mentioned a restaurant in San Francisco called Lipburn that makes really good California rolls, right? I asked someone to inquire about it. They don't use sashimi in their rolls, but rather processed avocado, which is why they're so crunchy. I tried making some today. Go wash your hands."
"Really?" The girl's eyes lit up. "I absolutely love you, Linda!"
I love you too, baby.
Just as the girl was skipping and preparing to squeeze into the restaurant, Ethan, who was standing behind Thomas and Linda, also came into her view.
When Ethan realized that the girl had finally turned her gaze to him.
He also gave a happy smile and took the initiative to greet her, "Hi, Evelyn, good evening."
"I'm not good, Ethan."
However, the girl immediately stopped smiling and put on a stern face.
Her "keep away" attitude made it seem like Ethan owed her millions.
"How dare you talk to Ethan like that?" Thomas asked, somewhat displeased.
"He's your brother," he emphasized.
"Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!"
Thomas's words made Evelyn raise her voice and roll her eyes. "I know! Ethan's my brother! But I don't want to be the sister of that idiot! Okay?"
With that, she turned around and went straight upstairs.
Thomas's face stiffened at the sudden turn, and Linda tried to ease the tension by saying, "Evelyn, it's time to eat."
"I'm not eating! Just seeing him makes me so angry I could die!" Evelyn shouted.
At the same time, she stomped her feet forcefully.
The "bang bang bang" sounds were the mournful cries of the wooden staircase finally giving way under the strain.
This sight infuriated Thomas, who roared, "Fine, don't eat then! This one meal won't starve you!"
Then, he turned his gaze to Ethan and Linda, "Let's go eat."
Ethan raised his head and glanced upstairs.
The figure that vanished in an instant made him raise an eyebrow.
As Thomas said, Evelyn was his, or rather, the original owner of the body's sister, but their relationship...
Well, in the original owner's memories, their relationship wasn't actually this strained at first.
Evelyn, whose full name is Evelyn Jensen, was born in 1954. She is the daughter of Ethan Jones' uncle, Thomas Jensen, and his late wife. In the same year that Evelyn was born, her mother died from Serratia marcescens.
Thomas was heartbroken by the death of his beloved wife. Since he had no experience in raising children and was a male both physiologically and in terms of self-identity, he asked Linda, who was working in her family's orchard at the time, to help take care of the child. Over time, the two developed feelings for each other, and Linda naturally became Evelyn's stepmother.
Because Evelyn was raised by Linda from a young age, their relationship was extremely close. In addition, Linda had fertility issues and did not have children of her own with Thomas, so she always treated Evelyn as her own daughter. Therefore, the worries about the wealthy family were completely eliminated.
In this situation, when Ethan Jones was taken in by Linda after the death of his parents, Evelyn took great care of the little boy because of her love for him. She went to and from school with him, did his homework with him, and asked her father Thomas to enroll them in the same extracurricular classes. She accompanied Ethan to learn karate and horseback riding, and they even went to SAT tutoring classes together.
Evelyn believes that, barring any unforeseen circumstances, Ethan Jones will get into a good university with her help, since she applied to university a year earlier than Ethan and got into Stanford, which is near her home.
But who knew that Ethan would drop out of school after graduating from high school, listen to some anti-intellectual rhetoric, and desperately want to jump into the workforce.
This behavior infuriated Evelyn, and for the next three years, she never gave Ethan a kind look.
Ethan, who had traveled through time, actually agreed with Evelyn's approach.
There was nothing he could do; he knew perfectly well that Ethan's sister Evelyn and aunt Linda were right.
Reading may not be the only opportunity to change one's destiny, but it is certainly the simplest choice to change one's life. A degree may not represent a person's ability, but it can make it clear to others that those with a degree have passed most of the screening tests.
So, after transmigrating, Ethan tried to mend his relationship with his older sister, who wasn't blinded by the concept of happy education, but unfortunately, the process didn't seem to be satisfactory.
With a sigh, I followed my aunt and uncle into the restaurant.
Because he was angry, Thomas had a long face during the meal, looking like a shoehorn.
As the head of the family, he remained silent, so Linda and Ethan didn't dare to speak either. When the atmosphere became so tense that everyone was starting to feel uncomfortable, Linda finally stood up.
She placed the still-warm, roughly two-pound Dungeness crab on a plate, then ladled out a bowl of clam chowder, grabbed a California roll, and said, "I'll go get her something to eat."
"Let me do it," Ethan suggested.
"You?" Linda asked, somewhat surprised.
Even Thomas gave him a questioning look.
"Yes, I'll go."
Ethan smiled and said frankly, "Actually, we all know why Evelyn has been angry with me all these years. She thinks my decision to give up university was naive and immature. Although I still feel that studying might not be right for me, I also have to admit that I was a bit too willful in handling this matter back then. I owe her an apology, so, I'll do it..."
"Oh, Ethan..."
Linda pursed her lips, tears welling up in her eyes.
"hey-hey……"
Thomas chuckled and gave Ethan a light pat on the butt.
"Go for it, kid, you're like a Texas cowboy now! Even though I hate those idiots!"
With their support, Ethan carried the food upstairs. Looking at the closed door, he stretched the tray with one hand and knocked on the door with the other.
After a few knocks, a brief inquiry came from inside.
"Who?"
"I."
"..."
Two seconds later, another voice came out.
"Get out of here, I don't want to see you."
Evelyn perfectly blended a calm voice with volatile words.
Upon hearing the word "get lost," Ethan chuckled, then leaned against the doorway and said, "Evelyn, I know you've been angry with me all these years, but I'm here today to celebrate with you."
"I'm free. I've been fired from Milrova."
"Because of Nolan Bushnell."
Ethan's words received no response.
But he was not discouraged and continued, "You know what? They didn't actually want to compensate me at first. They used the fact that I caused huge losses to the company as a reason to intimidate me into leaving the company on my own."
"But I held on and even threatened them in return, which scared them into giving me 2N+1 in compensation."
Ethan paused again at this point.
Seeing that there was still no reaction from inside, he smiled and said, "Do you know what reason I used to scare them today? It was the conversation you had with Thomas earlier."
"Do you remember a month ago, when Thomas complained to us at the dinner table that the Liben Chamber of Commerce was deliberately driving down the purchase price of our navel oranges? You said at the time that this was a test by Liben, which was unwilling to accept the post-war status quo and wanted to gain freedom and sovereignty. I used your idea to accuse them of being foreign capital trying to erode our country's industry, forcing them to give me compensation voluntarily."
"To be honest, reading really can broaden your horizons and open your mind."
"Your point of view is correct."
Ethan stopped there.
After waiting for about two or three seconds, a voice came from inside the room, "The door isn't locked."
This fact made Ethan grin from ear to ear.
When he pushed open the door, everything inside was revealed to him.
It was a square room of nearly two hundred square feet, with a window on both the north and south sides.
Beneath the south-facing window, there was a bed with a poster of Barbra Streisand pasted above it, and a wardrobe right next to it.
Under the north-facing window, there was a desk and a bookshelf. The bookshelf was piled high with books, while the top was covered with cassette tape boxes.
At this moment, Evelyn is sitting at her desk, engrossed in reading under the light of an incandescent bulb.
Perhaps Evelyn didn't want Ethan to know what she was looking at, or perhaps she was just starving and wanted to eat.
When she heard footsteps behind her, she immediately closed the book in her hand and placed it on the corner of the table.
This action also allowed Ethan to see the book's cover clearly.
It was a magazine with a yellow background and a blue label.
Its name is written at the top of the cover.
Popular Electronics.
Note: ①Barbara Streisand: A Jewish actress, winner of the Tony Award, Oscar, Golden Globe Award, and Grammy Award. ②Popular Electronics: A monthly magazine published in the United States since the 1950s, a legendary book in the field of electrical engineering.
P.S., after some consideration, I've added the notes again. There are also supplements in the first chapter, because much of the content is quite old, and it would be difficult to read without the notes. If you can't see it, just refresh the page.
