Chapter 16

My Ex-Wife Is Pregnant

After finishing his meal, Chen Yongqiang was overcome with sleepiness from staying up all night, and his eyelids were drooping.

He returned to his room, and just as he was about to lie down and consider taking a look at the system space, he heard footsteps outside the door.

After cleaning up the stove, Lin Xiulian came in and bolted the door shut behind her.

She sat down on the edge of the bed, looked at Chen Yongqiang, and asked curiously, "How much did you sell that wild boar for?"

Chen Yongqiang reached over the old cloth bag from the bedside and handed it to her: "It's all here, I haven't had time to count it yet."

Lin Xiulian took the cloth bag and poured all the money inside onto the bed mat. There was a pile of small bills, cents, and coins mixed together, with the largest denomination being a five-yuan banknote.

She first picked out the five five-yuan bills, straightened them, and placed them neatly to one side, muttering, "Five yuan, ten yuan, fifteen... that's twenty-five."

Then they started sorting through the small bills, one or two yuan, "Twenty-six, twenty-eight..."

"You're amazing! You made so much money in just one night. How many did you count again?"

She was so busy talking that she messed up the counting in her hands, so she had to gather the small bills back together and say, "Count them again, count them again, this time I won't say anything."

This time, Lin Xiulian was smarter and sorted the different denominations of money first: "This is twenty-one yuan and fifty cents. The pork is thirty-seven yuan and eighty cents, plus this twenty-one yuan and fifty cents..."

She silently calculated, "It's fifty-nine yuan and thirty cents in total! That's almost sixty yuan!"

Upon hearing this number, Chen Yongqiang quickly calculated in his mind that it was roughly equivalent to the work points of a strong laborer working in the fields for three or four months!

Hunting is indeed a quick way to make money, but he also knows that it's a business that depends on the weather; wild boars aren't available every day, and he can't always catch them.

If I want to live a stable and comfortable life in the future, I'll probably have to rely on that mysterious system in my head.

As Chen Yongqiang was thinking, Lin Xiulian suddenly went limp and nestled into Chen Yongqiang's arms.

She pressed her cheek against his strong chest and said, "I'll follow you from now on, cook for you, warm your bed, and have your babies. Please don't send me away."

Lin Xiulian has been staying at Chen Yongqiang's house these past few days and has truly witnessed Chen Yongqiang's abilities.

He could go up the mountain to hunt and earn money that made everyone in the village envious. He was also a down-to-earth and hardworking person. Although he didn't talk much, he was really good to his family.

In her heart, this was a reliable person that was hard to find even with a lantern, and far better than that old bachelor Zheng Wencai.

Afraid of missing this opportunity, she blurted out her innermost thoughts in the excitement of counting the money.

Chen Yongqiang, who was feeling sleepy, was instantly wide awake after being touched by this warm and soft woman.

Lin Xiulian's soft body pressed tightly against him, and Chen Yongqiang's arm instinctively wrapped around her. "If you want to stay here, then stay."

These words are like a reassurance, and even more so, a promise.

Upon hearing this, Lin Xiulian finally felt relieved.

She wrapped her arms around Chen Yongqiang's neck and, with a resolute passion, pressed her lips to his.

Lin Xiulian gradually went from being proactive to being compliant, and then responded awkwardly under his forceful guidance.

Chen Yongqiang unbuttoned her coat. Today, Lin Xiulian was wearing a red bellyband, which made her look more mature than when she first arrived.

While Chen Yongqiang and Lin Xiulian were deeply in love in bed, Lin Xiuzhen, far away in Guangzhou in the south, was experiencing a completely different situation.

This was Lin Xiuzhen's first day at work, and the unfamiliar environment made her a little flustered.

Suddenly, a strange feeling of nausea welled up in her throat without warning, and she quickly covered her mouth and forced herself to swallow it.

A woman in her forties next to her noticed her unusual behavior: "Girl, you wouldn't happen to be... pregnant, would you?"

Lin Xiuzhen quickly shook her head: "No, sister, it's probably just that I'm not used to the water and soil, plus I'm a little tired."

She had been married to Chen Yongqiang for several years without getting pregnant, and had long been used to the label of being unable to have children, so she subconsciously felt it was impossible.

She got up and went to the water dispenser to pour herself a glass of water. Her coworker's words made her suspicious.

Lin Xiuzhen counted the days, remembering that she and Chen Yongqiang had been sleeping together before the divorce: "Could it be that, just when I was leaving, I really got pregnant?"

This thought threw her into a state of turmoil. If she were really pregnant, Lin Xiuzhen's first thought would be to go back and tell Chen Yongqiang.

But she shook her head, as if trying to shake off this unrealistic idea.

Lin Xiuzhen secretly made up her mind: "I finally got out of this predicament. Even if I do get pregnant, I have to work for a few months first and save some money."

She never imagined that in her former home, on that familiar bed...

Lin Xiulian has now taken her place and is entangled with her former man.

At this moment, Chen Yongqiang was unaware that he was about to become a father and was still holding Lin Xiulian tightly.

This woman barged into his heart when he was at his most vulnerable, seamlessly taking the place that Lin Xiuzhen had left behind.

[The host's partner has successfully conceived and is currently establishing a contract with the mountain god's essence...]

[Contract established! You have officially embarked on the cultivation path of the [Earthly Deity Lineage]. Continue completing the Mountain God's quests to obtain cultivation resources!]

Upon seeing this notification, Chen Yongqiang wondered: Who is pregnant with my child? Xiulian? We've only been together for two days, could it be Xiuzhen?

...

Smoke curls from chimneys in the village.

The aroma of wild boar meat wafted from the rooftops of several households that had purchased it.

In the village chief's kitchen, wild boar meat was stewing in an iron pot.

Li Caifeng added firewood to the stove and said to Yang Dahai, who was sitting on the doorstep smoking a pipe, "This wild game is really different; it's much more fragrant than domestic pigs."

Yang Dahai took a drag of his cigarette: "That kid Chen Yongqiang, he's actually got some skills."

"More than just a few skills? Now she can legitimately live in his house." Li Caifeng's words were loaded with meaning.

The other older women in the village were also gossiping about it: "If you ask me, what good could possibly happen between Chen Yongqiang and Lin Xiulian living under the same roof?"

"You can't say that," another person replied. "Xiulian has had a tough time too. Besides, Yongqiang's wife ran away, so someone has to take care of the family."

The woman scoffed, "So you're taking care of someone sharing a bed? Yongqiang tried to defend himself this morning, saying he was completely innocent. But think about it, a man and a woman alone together, who would believe that!"

Gossip about Chen Yongqiang and Lin Xiulian quietly spread through the village.

Some people envied Chen Yongqiang's skills, while others speculated about the relationship between the two. These conversations became the best topic of gossip among the villagers.

The much-discussed couple closed their doors and windows and slept in each other's arms, completely shutting out the outside world's gossip.

The villagers' gossip had no effect on them whatsoever.

"Brother Yongqiang..." Lin Xiulian called out indistinctly.

Chen Yongqiang didn't respond, but simply hugged her tighter.

He was planning to go hunting in the mountains again that night, since he had spotted a herd of wild boars last night.
