Chapter 42
Extension Technique
Chapter 42 Extension Technique
"I'm over seventy. I don't know if it's true or not that people over seventy aren't detained."
As he spoke, Old Gu suddenly burst into laughter.
Everyone was bewildered.
He spoke as he worked without stopping, methodically completing the surgery step by step.
"More than 20 years ago, at an academic conference in Guangzhou, an elderly man who attended went out for drinks to celebrate after the conference and ended up being arrested. I guess the idea that people over 70 can get away with not being detained is a lie."
"Boss, who are you talking about?" Professor Zhou asked, puzzled.
"Hey," Old Gu didn't say, "The old man has passed away, why bother explaining it too clearly? But when we found out about it, we were all incredibly envious. Over seventy and still able to drink and celebrate, his energy was truly enviable!"
That makes sense. Without that kind of spirit, how could someone perform tens of thousands of surgeries in their lifetime?
Ji Xiang ignored Old Gu's rambling gossip and focused on watching the movements of his hands.
The system NPC performed the surgery better than Old Gu, but the two were not on the same wavelength.
It was obvious at a glance that Dr. Gu had spent his entire life immersed in urology, and was intimately familiar with anatomical structures.
The system NPC, on the other hand, possesses powerful abilities and directly covers surgical procedures in departments that he is not particularly skilled in.
Dr. Gu's surgery was fascinating, and Ji Xiang watched and learned intently.
"Speaking of which, a department where everyone's internet access is blocked, huh!"
"Old Gu, things are stricter now, but that doesn't stop us. If you're sick, you need to get treatment. If you're not sick, what man doesn't want to grow 3, 5, or 10 centimeters? This is the people's beautiful demand for improving their quality of life, so you can't be prejudiced against it." Dean Li was a good straight man, and he continued Old Gu's words.
"Women's plastic surgery is particularly well-developed, but there aren't many men's, which is related to this perception," said Mr. Gu. "It's just surgery, what's the big deal? As long as you go to a regular hospital and not some remote private clinic, you'll be fine."
Old Gu seemed to have forgotten something, or perhaps he did it on purpose. After hearing this, Dean Li's face darkened.
"Hahaha." Old Gu chuckled, ignoring Dean Li's emotions. "My first lengthening surgery was also something I was forced into."
"Mr. Gu, please tell us about it."
Although Dean Li had some reservations about what Elder Gu had just said, feeling that he was trying to take advantage of the situation, he was well aware of Elder Gu's standing in the industry and could only grit his teeth and continue to play along.
"This... is too difficult," Dean Li said.
"Yes, I said no, the surgery couldn't be done," said Old Gu. "Who knew the old man would suddenly kneel down in front of me, tears streaming down his face. 'My son is the only son in three generations…' he said. 'Although you are young, you are very responsible. We've come and we won't leave. We're willing to entrust our child to you for experimentation!'"
"You can't do this kind of surgery!" Dean Li said quickly, getting into character. "He's the only son in three generations. If the surgery goes wrong, he'll fight you to the death!"
"Hehe." Old Gu chuckled. "Back then, everyone had free medical care, and there were no medical disputes. Many cases of injury or death were caused by inadequate medical staff."
There were cases of patients who died, and their families would bring firecrackers to the hospital the next day, saying they were sorry for causing trouble and wanted to ward off bad luck.
Listening to Old Gu recount those events from decades ago, it was as if they were hearing a myth or legend, leaving everyone astonished.
Ji Xiang, in particular, was even distracted for a moment.
Such understanding and reasonable family members are what doctors dream of these days. Unfortunately, everything that Dr. Gu said was completely different from Ji Xiang's understanding.
The generation gap is deep, a result of the sweeping influence of the times.
However, Ji Xiang quickly turned his attention back to Gu Lao's surgery.
"And then, Professor Gu?" Dean Li asked.
"Later, I started researching it. I brought a bottle of Moutai to the anatomy department of our affiliated hospital, drank it for three days, and even used a cadaver as a substitute."
"!!!"
"After conducting research, I discovered the problem. At that time, the doctor-patient relationship was good, and I was young, bold, and quite meticulous. Later, the surgery was performed, and it was successful."
"Awesome! Old Gu!!"
Dean Li seized the opportunity to praise him.
Two years later, the old man came to see me with his son, daughter-in-law, and grandson.
"Your merits are immeasurable."
Dean Li's flattery was blunt and simplistic, even a bit shameless.
But when Ji Xiang heard this, he didn't think there was anything wrong with it.
Isn't that right?
Ji Xiang had occasionally heard from a system NPC what the level of medical care in China was like decades ago.
Old Gu spoke lightly, saying there was no medical dispute at the time. That's what he said, but I imagine he was under tremendous pressure when he had the surgery.
Later, the patient's family brought their child to see him and expressed their gratitude in person. It is no exaggeration to say that he has done a great service.
"But what about now? Accounts blocked through legitimate channels are all banned! I just don't understand why we legitimate doctors have to hide our scientific knowledge, while those quacks can get away with it so easily," Old Gu complained.
His complaints were like a knife, stabbing into Dean Li's heart again and again.
For various reasons, it's true that Professor Gu's legitimate science popularization posts are reported and banned. But there are countless other guys out there, including the guys at the urology hospital where Dean Li works.
"It has little to do with me; the work is all done by the big boss," Dean Li thought to himself.
Although he was very unhappy and inwardly resented Old Master Gu for smashing his bowl while eating, he still smiled and showed no sign of displeasure.
Regarding the lengthening procedure, Ji Xiang, with his limited understanding of medicine, noted that people held different opinions and views on this procedure.
Even the NPC in the system, the biggest expert among experts, said he didn't know.
So Ji Xiang didn't listen to Old Gu's complaints at all, but stared intently at the surgical area, watching his surgical movements.
This observation was vastly different from being taught surgery by a system NPC in the system space.
The surgeries performed by Master Gu and the system NPCs are different; although they are somewhat weaker, they are still quite instructive.
Moreover, Ji Xiang came into contact with a brand-new surgical technique, and through mutual reference and comparison, he gained some of his own understanding.
The surgery ended two hours later.
Professor Gu turned and stepped off the stage, leaving the final cleanup work to Professor Zhou.
He first chatted with the patient for a few minutes to calm him down, and then turned to find Ji Xiang.
When he saw Ji Xiang, Old Gu was slightly taken aback.
Ji Xiang was like a block of wood, still staring at the surgical area, his right hand behind his back, his fingers trembling slightly, as if he were playing the piano.
"Dr. Xiao Ji," said Old Gu.
Ji Xiang remained silent, seemingly unaware that Elder Gu had called him, and continued to stare intently at the surgical area without blinking.
Mo Chenggui felt that Ji Xiang was acting strangely today, so he patted Ji Xiang on the back.
"what?"
"Old Gu wants to see you."
Ji Xiang came to his senses and saw that his stamina, which hadn't changed much on the system panel in the upper right corner of his vision, had dropped by half.
Emmm, what's going on?
Ji Xiang's biggest headache in the system space was his stamina, while his energy was always sufficient.
But watching one of Dr. Gu's surgeries depleted half of my energy.
He quickly stopped thinking about the details; he could talk to the system NPC about these things, and he was sure they could give him a satisfactory answer.
"Old Gu." Ji Xiang stopped thinking about it and turned around with a smile.
"You're looking very intently. What are you thinking about?" Old Gu asked.
"Your surgery was fantastic, but there were a few points I didn't understand."
"You said it."
Ji Xiang pointed out a few parts he didn't understand and then followed Elder Gu out of the operating room.
Mo Chenggui looked at Ji Xiang and Old Gu's retreating figures, feeling lost.
Professor Gu is a leading figure in the industry and a top scholar. To be favored by Professor Gu is like having one's ancestors' graves emitting auspicious smoke.
However, how could ancestral graves just start emitting smoke?
The coffin lid must be very sturdy, otherwise it wouldn't fit a materialist's understanding of the world.
But Ji Xiang's ancestral grave looked like it was cooking, with wisps of blue smoke rising from it one after another.
When he was still a reserve trainee, he was chosen by Colonel Wang and himself. After he came out to perform surgery, he was chosen by Elder Gu.
This person is really lucky.
Just as I was thinking this, I suddenly felt a sharp pain in my wrist's radial styloid process, as if my teacher had secretly slapped me with hemostatic forceps.
Mo Chenggui shivered.
Mr. Gu explained several of Ji Xiang's doubts, and Ji Xiang benefited greatly from the explanations.
Old Master Gu seemed quite satisfied. He waved and said, "Dean Li."
"Hey, I'm here." Dean Li wagged his tail and came to Old Master Gu's side.
"Go and check on your hospitalized and observation patients," said Old Gu.
Dean Li smiled and said, "Don't worry, Dr. Gu, we don't do unprofessional, off-the-beaten-path treatments like electrotherapy for postoperative patients."
As he spoke, he glanced back at Mo Chenggui.
"Professor Mo was invited to perform a circumcision, and he made his request before we even discussed the price."
"Dr. Mo is good," Old Gu praised.
"Don't worry, we've moved past the era of extensive development. Our boss now demands strict, strict, and strictest standards, and professionalism above all else."
Despite Dean Li's explanation, Old Gu still insisted on looking around.
Stubborn as a donkey.
The way he looked at the patient was the same as Professor Mo's. Dean Li felt a little disdainful, but he didn't show it. He served Old Gu like a sycophant throughout, repeatedly emphasizing the professionalism of his hospital, as if he had never done the electrotherapy for patients before.
……
……
Three hours later, Ji Xiang returned home.
"Dad, I'm back," Ji Xiang greeted as he entered the house.
Ji Xiang's father came out with walnuts in his hand. Seeing that Ji Xiang looked refreshed and full of energy, he nodded in satisfaction.
"Ji Xiang, I talked to your mother, and she said you can just learn it casually, you don't need to use your essence blood."
"Father, what do you mean?" Ji Xiang asked.
"Me, young man." Ji Xiang's father smiled slightly. "A man should always have his own career. Medicine is a big industry. If you reach the top, you'll be no worse off than your maternal grandfather's family."
Ji Xiang smiled and nodded at his grandfather.
"But you really need to take care of your health. You've been looking pale intermittently; I think it's low blood sugar. I bought you some chocolate and put it in your room," Ji Xiang's father said. "Take a bite if you feel unwell."
"Okay." Ji Xiang didn't explain further, chatted with the old man for a few words, changed his clothes, and went to take a hot shower.
While taking a shower, Ji Xiang briefly reviewed the surgeries he had performed and observed that day, trying to figure out what questions he needed to ask the system NPC.
Although time is almost frozen in the system, Ji Xiang subconsciously still regards the system NPC as a hidden master.
Being able to consult with a system NPC is incredibly lucky, and Ji Xiang certainly doesn't want to be annoying by speaking haltingly.
Back in his room, Ji Xiang lay on the bed, held his breath, and entered the system space.
"teacher."
Ji Xiang was already used to that hunched figure with his hands behind his back and his waist bent. He bowed and greeted him politely.
"They're here."
"Teacher, I observed Professor Gu's surgery today."
