Chapter 10

A New Look

Pengcheng Funeral Home.

Gu Huai found a corner and paced back and forth.

Two thoughts were clashing in his mind.

Prior to this, he had always believed that Zhang Zhenhua's case was committed by the serial taxi robber he remembered.

But what he just witnessed was completely different from his memory.

Although that group was ruthless, in the end they were just after money.

The murderer who killed Zhang Zhenhua had reached a level of depravity.

Every time Gu Huai thought about the scene in the photo, he couldn't concentrate.

"Ah Huai, don't just stand there like an idiot. My master is here, and he asked me to call you over." Hou Hao's voice interrupted his thoughts.

"Okay."

Gu Huai rubbed his face vigorously, trying to cheer himself up.

Hou Hao then walked over to Gu Huai and whispered, "My master seems to have some questions for you. He's in a bad mood right now, so be careful later."

Seeing Hou Hao's cautious demeanor, Gu Huai gently patted his shoulder. "Thanks, Brother Hou, I understand."

After taking a few quick steps, Gu Huai arrived at a small room in the funeral home.

Pushing open the door, the atmosphere in the room was oppressive and somber.

At this moment, Wu Feilin was standing alone by the window with his back to the door.

His left hand was raised slightly, holding a burning cigarette between his fingers, the ash piled up quite long, while his right hand held a piece of paper, which upon closer inspection appeared to be an autopsy report.

His right foot was unconsciously kicking the wall at a very fast pace, as if he wanted to vent his emotions.

"Captain Wu, you wanted to see me?" Gu Huai said in a low voice.

"Ah Huai is here." Wu Feilin turned around, his face expressionless.

He walked to a chair and casually pointed, "Sit down."

Gu Huai nodded, not daring to make any unnecessary movements, and walked straight to the sofa.

Hou Hao hesitated for a moment before finally gritting his teeth and following Gu Huai inside.

Before Hou Hao could even sit down, Wu Feilin spoke up, "Monkey, did you do what I asked you to do?"

"I've dealt with Master," Hou Hao stood up straight as if he'd been electrocuted. "I've already notified the people in each branch office to help compile a unified list of registered sex offenders. They said they'd hand it over to us within three days!"

"Three days?" Wu Feilin frowned. "Three days for something this simple?"

"Isn't this a holiday..." Hou Hao replied softly, head down.

"Holiday! Holiday! It's this late and we still have a holiday!" Wu Feilin's chest heaved.

Clearly, Zhang Zhenhua's case has made even this veteran policeman somewhat unable to contain his emotions.

After venting his pent-up emotions, Wu Feilin waved to Hou Hao, "You don't need to worry about this. I'll personally call the people in each branch later."

Hou Hao felt as if he had been granted a pardon upon hearing this, and immediately nodded and sat down.

After asking Hou Hao, Wu Feilin turned his gaze to Gu Huai.

His eyes were piercing, completely different from when he was at the police station.

This made Gu Huai take it seriously as well.

"Ah Huai, it seems my judgment was wrong before," Wu Feilin suddenly said. "You are indeed a force to be reckoned with; you noticed something was wrong right away."

"Oh, it's just a lucky break," Gu Huai replied modestly.

Previously at the police station, he was forced by circumstances to be tough in order to get involved in the case.

The case has now developed in a way that has completely exceeded his expectations.

He naturally couldn't act like a hero as before.

"Ah Huai, don't be so modest." Wu Feilin forced a very ugly smile from the corner of his mouth. "I've never been the kind of person who's jealous of talent and ability, and Monkey knows that."

Hou Hao nodded in agreement, echoing his master's words.

Even though Wu Feilin had already made his point clear, Gu Huai still didn't dare to relax in the slightest, and only nodded slightly.

Having been through many trials and tribulations, he knew very well that although Wu Feilin's words were very polite, if it was just to offer these compliments, then there was no need for him to be called over separately.

His words of praise were merely a prelude to what he was about to say.

Seeing that Gu Huai wasn't taking the bait, Wu Feilin decided to drop the pretense and directly state the purpose of his summons.

He stared at Gu Huai with a scrutinizing look in his eyes and slowly said, "I'm just curious, how did you know from the beginning that this was a murder case, and a serial murder case at that!"

【It's here!】

Just as Gu Huai had expected, Wu Feilin's purpose in calling him here was indeed not so simple.

He just hadn't expected Wu Feilin to ask that question so directly.

Just as the atmosphere was becoming increasingly tense, the person who was least noticeable in the room finally spoke.

"Master, I know the reason."

"You know?" Wu Feilin looked at his apprentice with a puzzled expression.

Before this, he had considered countless ways to explain Gu Huai.

He never imagined that his own apprentice could explain this matter.

He adjusted his posture, crossed his arms, and looked at his apprentice. "Then tell me, how did Ah Huai know?"

"Here's what happened, Master." Hou Hao stammered as he recounted in detail what Gu Huai had told him at the taxi company.

As Wu Feilin listened to Hou Hao's story, he frequently turned to look at Gu Huai.

Even Wu Feilin was surprised when he heard that taxi drivers earned such high incomes.

He turned to Gu Huai and asked, "So you're saying you've concluded Zhang Zhenhua has been murdered just because of this? How do you know all this?"

"Captain Wu, my parents run a business here, and they're the ones who tell me about things in the market."

Gu Huai continued to try his best to keep a low profile.

He understood that Wu Feilin, as the captain of the criminal investigation team, had a very keen sense of things.

It's not that he's afraid of his rebirth being discovered.

After all, no one would have thought of these things.

What he was really afraid of was being suspected of being a spy.

If I were to be suspected, then I would be in real trouble.

At this time of year, Shenzhen is on high alert, with everyone on edge.

Wu Feilin looked at Gu Huai with unpredictable eyes, his mind racing with all sorts of thoughts.

If Gu Huai were a police officer who had been on the job for some time, he might suspect that Gu Huai knew some secrets that he didn't.

But Gu Huai happens to be a new police officer who has just been preparing to report for duty.

Just a month ago, he had gone through several rounds of very strict political vetting.

He trusted the organization, and therefore he also believed that he and his family had absolutely no problems before this.

Wu Feilin also found it hard to believe that any organization could contact, understand, and corrupt Gu Huai in such a short time.

After all, he had been staying in the north before this.

Thinking of this, Wu Feilin couldn't help but smile.

Could it be that I've really struck gold this time? Is this kid really that talented?

Just as Wu Feilin was pondering whether he should report to his superiors later and ask to bring the kid over, a series of urgent knocks sounded at the door.

"Captain, the victim's family is arriving soon. Should we go to them?"

Upon hearing this, Wu Feilin immediately stood up and spoke to Gu Huai.

"Ah Huai, you've had prior contact with the victim's family and know them quite well. Would it be alright if you comforted her later?"

"No!"
