Chapter 5
I must see him alive or dead
"Cough cough cough."
Gu Huai's question caused Hou Hao to cough. "Little Gu, why are you asking these questions at a time like this?"
"Yes, Comrade Gu, finding people is the priority right now. These trivial details shouldn't be important, right?" Zhang Shengli said, rubbing his fingers together, sounding slightly flustered.
Seeing his reaction, Gu Huai understood what was going on.
He shook his head and said seriously, "No, this is a very important question; it directly relates to whether we can find your nephew."
"This..." Zhang Shengli's brows furrowed into a deep frown.
He took a deep drag on his cigarette and glanced into the room.
After confirming that Liu Yanni hadn't followed him out, he pulled Gu Huai a few steps outside.
"Comrade Gu, you guessed right. Zhenhua does occasionally eat fast food." Zhang Shengli sighed heavily. "I advised him against it before, Yanni is pregnant, it wouldn't be good if they found out... but he just wouldn't listen..."
As he spoke, he picked up a cigarette and took another deep drag. "He works really hard, and he doesn't smoke or gamble. That's his only hobby, and since it doesn't cost much, I just stopped bothering him."
For Gu Huai, who owned a clothing factory in his previous life, it wasn't uncommon for his wife to cheat on him while she was pregnant.
Zhang Zhenhua was just having a quick meal outside, but some people are keeping mistresses outside, and he has even seen more chaotic relationships between men and women.
Suddenly remembering something, Zhang Shengli grabbed Gu Huai and asked, "Comrade Gu, was Zhenhua arrested for soliciting prostitution?"
Gu Huai naturally wouldn't speak too definitively, so he could only nod slightly and say, "Possibly."
However, before Zhang Shengli could even show an expression, he changed the subject, saying, "But the possibility is not high, so don't have too much hope."
"This..." Zhang Shengli grabbed Gu Huai's hand anxiously, "Why?!"
"Master Zhang, it's like this." Hou Hao stepped forward and pulled the anxious Zhang Shengli aside, explaining, "According to our work regulations, no matter what the reason for the suspect's arrest, we will contact the suspect's family as soon as we ascertain the suspect's identity."
"Is that so, Comrade Gu?" Zhang Shengli, who had just begun to feel a glimmer of hope, did not want to believe Hou Hao's words. He looked at Gu Huai with hopeful eyes, wanting to get a different answer from him.
Gu Huai knew perfectly well what Zhang Shengli was thinking at that moment.
However, the more this is the case, the more he needs to explain the current situation to him so that he can be mentally prepared.
Otherwise, if things really turn out the way he thinks, then it would be a cataclysmic event for this family.
There has to be someone who can hold things together a little.
Gu Huai shook his head slightly. "Master Zhang, it's too early to draw any conclusions now, but we need to be prepared for all eventualities, including the worst-case scenario."
Upon hearing this, Zhang Shengli's face turned pale instantly, and the hand that had been gripping Gu Huai's clothes fell limply down, and he looked as if he was about to collapse to the ground.
Upon seeing this, Gu Huai immediately reached out to help him up.
With Hou Hao's help, the two men helped Zhang Shengli to sit down on the ground.
"Ahua has had such a hard life." Zhang Shengli sighed, wiping away his tears. "His father passed away early, and he's the only able-bodied man in the family. His mother is also in poor health and needs to take medicine all year round. His wife is pregnant, which costs money, and now we need to spend money to build a house here."
"Everything piled up this year. Officer, you have no idea how he got through this year."
When he got excited, Zhang Shengli's hand trembled so badly as he reached for the cigarette that the lighter flame couldn't light.
Frustrated, he pinched his trembling hand hard, trying to control it.
Seeing this, Gu Huai reached out and took the lighter from his hand.
With a snap, he lit the cigarette.
"Master Zhang, I know you have a good relationship with your nephew," Gu Huai said cautiously, "but you can't afford to collapse now. You have to help Ahua keep things stable at home, otherwise..."
Gu Huai only said half of what he wanted to say, and did not finish his sentence.
In his view, if Zhang Zhenhua's family doesn't have a pillar of support, the situation will become very bad.
Without any source of income, their future livelihood was uncertain.
Many families fall apart because of a sudden change in circumstances.
The duties of the people's police are not limited to solving cases; mediating between the people involved in a case is also one of their responsibilities.
Gu Huai didn't want to hurt Zhang Shengli again; it seemed that only Zhang Shengli had the motivation and ability to stabilize Zhang Zhenhua's family.
"I understand...I understand," Zhang Shengli said somewhat blankly, "But, officer, I can't keep this a secret for long. What if we can't find Zhenhua...what if we can't find him..."
"We can handle Zhang Zhenhua's matter," Gu Huai interrupted him, glancing at Hou Hao as he spoke.
When Gu Huai looked at him like that, Hou Hao finally realized what was going on and quickly said, "That's right! Master Zhang, don't worry, leave Zhang Zhenhua's matter to us. We'll find him alive or dead, and we'll definitely give you an explanation."
Seeing that the two had already said that, Zhang Shengli, with tears streaming down his face, grabbed their hands and said, "Then I'll leave it to you two comrades, I'll leave it to you!"
Hou Hao seemed to be moved by Zhang Shengli's words, which sounded like entrusting his son to someone, and nodded heavily.
Meanwhile, Gu Huai silently noted down Zhang Zhenhua's home address, planning to contact the Women's Federation later to help look after him.
Now there are only two women left in this family, an elderly woman and a young child, so it's more convenient for the women's federation to come.
After recording everything, Gu Huai knew that it was inconvenient for him to stay here any longer.
"Master Zhang, we've got a pretty good idea of the situation here, so we'll head back now. Please also ask your fellow workers to keep an eye on Zhang Zhenhua's car. If anything happens, please contact us immediately."
As he spoke, Gu Huai handed Zhang Shengli a piece of paper with his pager number on it.
Zhang Shengli nodded slowly, "I'm counting on you."
Outside Yinhu Village.
Gu Huai and Hou Hao got into the police car one after the other.
After what had just happened, neither of them had a good expression on their face.
After a long silence, Gu Huai finally broke it.
"Brother Monkey, what do you think about this?"
"Zhang Zhenhua probably didn't flee to Hong Kong; he must have encountered an accident," Hou Hao said, rubbing his chin. "The only problem now is where to start the investigation."
"No rush." Gu Huai nodded gently. "Before that, we need to go back and report to Captain Wu."
Although in Gu Huai's mind, he had already equated Zhang Zhenhua's case with the case in his memory.
However, such things can only be kept in one's own heart and must never be told to a second person.
Furthermore, his memory of the case was quite vague, making it impossible for him to rely on his memory to directly raid the murderer's lair.
The only solution now is to go back to the municipal bureau and persuade Captain Wu to formally file the case.
Hou Hao also thought Gu Huai's statement made sense.
So he immediately started the car and sped off towards the municipal bureau.
