Chapter 15

This child must not be allowed to live.

Pengcheng Municipal Public Security Bureau, Archives Room.

When Gu Huai and Hou Hao arrived, the documents on the desks in the archives were already piled up like a small mountain.

"Sister Ling."

"Haozi's here." Ling Yue replied without looking up, "You just got scolded by your master again, didn't you?"

"No," Hou Hao scratched his head. "I was just discussing the case with my mentor in the office."

After saying that, he placed a lunchbox on the table.

"Aunt Zhang brought this especially for you."

"Really?" Ling Yue looked up at Hou Hao with some doubt. "Your master will discuss the case with you."

"It wasn't me..." Hou Hao finally couldn't bear to continue lying, and pointed at Gu Huai, "My master was just discussing the case with A-Huai, and my master quite agrees with his statement."

"Is that so?"

Ling Yue put down her pen, turned around, and looked Gu Huai up and down. "I heard you're from the Handong Police Academy?"

"Um."

"Why did you decide to come to Shenzhen? Isn't Handong a good place?"

"My parents came here, so I came along too."

"I see." Ling Yue nodded.

After a brief exchange of pleasantries, Ling Yue finally couldn't hold back her thoughts and asked, "What did you just say to Captain Wu? Tell me about it."

"No problem." Gu Huai pulled up a stool from the side and repeated what had just happened in the office.

After listening to Gu Huai's thoughts and ideas, Ling Yue slapped her thigh hard.

"So, you mean there are other people with inside information in this case, and the killer is doing this to threaten them into keeping quiet?"

"Yes, I do have some doubts." Gu Huai nodded slightly, "But what I still can't figure out is why the murderer would do this."

"What's there to think about? Once we catch the culprit, we'll know everything, right?" Ling Yue stood up casually and picked up all the documents on the table.

"You two should go back and rest early. We'll go on the visits together tomorrow."

After saying that, Ling Yue left with the documents in her arms.

Gu Huai was left sitting there in a daze.

"She's gone already?"

"Um."

Hou Hao was already somewhat used to this kind of thing.

He calmly opened the lunchbox on the table, took out the chopsticks inside, and started eating.

Compared to his composure, Gu Huai was anything but calm. "Where's the data? Don't we need to do it anymore?"

"Don't worry, Sister Ling will handle it." Hou Hao mumbled as he ate the fried rice noodles from his lunchbox. "Sister Ling is a pro at preparing documents; we'll only make things worse."

"So he just said we should go do some fieldwork and investigation tomorrow? We don't have to follow the team leader's orders?"

"Theoretically, yes." Hou Hao swallowed hard the stir-fried rice noodles that had already clumped together. "But as long as Sister Ling speaks up, my master will agree."

As he spoke, Hou Hao began to explain the situation of the First Brigade to Xiang Gu Huai.

"Ideally, the full complement of the First Battalion should consist of 30 people from its three reconnaissance squadrons, 4 people from the logistics and comprehensive team, 4 people from the mobile standby team, plus my master and Uncle Jiang, for a total of 40 people."

Gu Huai nodded slowly.

"But the reality is that there are not enough people at all. The largest brigade only has 30 people at most. With the current configuration, we can't keep up with the workload. Every group is short-handed. As a last resort, my master distributed the original logistics and mobile groups to various companies. Now, the logistics and mobile groups together consist of just me and Sister Ling."

"I usually handle errands and support, while Sister Ling takes care of the paperwork."

Gu Huai's mouth gaped open, his face filled with disbelief. "You mean Sister Ling is in charge of all the paperwork for the entire brigade?"

"Most of it," Hou Hao said matter-of-factly. "When things aren't too busy, the squadron also helps out with some things."

Even so, Gu Huai thought of the mountain of case files on Wu Feilin's desk and knew that the entire brigade was definitely never idle.

"Holy crap," Gu Huai muttered to himself, looking at the closed door. "She's practically a superhero."

Gu Huai believed Hou Hao's words. If there was such a superhuman in his company who was highly skilled in her work, he would fulfill her needs in any way he could, except for the stars in the sky.

"Alright, stop reminiscing. Let's finish eating and go back to rest." Hou Hao pushed his portion of late-night snack to Gu Huai. "You probably don't have a place to stay since it's your first day here, right?"

"Um."

Speaking of this, Gu Huai suddenly remembered that his luggage should still be in the reception room.

"Then come and squeeze in with me for the night, my top bunk is empty."

"OK."

the next day.

For the past two weeks, it rained every other day in Shenzhen, and we hardly saw the sun.

Today the weather has finally cleared up, and everyone took their blankets out to air them after getting up.

Early in the morning, Ling Yue found Wu Feilin in the cafeteria and explained her thoughts to him.

"What? You said you're going to visit Silver Lake?" Wu Feilin, who was eating breakfast, looked at Ling Yue with some confusion. "And you're going with these two kids?"

"Yes, Captain Wu, I'd like to apply to participate in the investigation." Ling Yue wasn't intimidated by Wu Feilin's imposing manner at all; she just kept her head down and ate her breakfast.

It was as if what he had just told Wu Feilin was a very trivial matter.

Seeing that Ling Yue seemed determined to get her way, Wu Feilin asked helplessly.

"You need to give me a reason, right?"

"I'm very interested in this case, and I want to catch this psychopath myself, no matter what."

"You know that's not what I'm asking," Wu Feilin said, somewhat annoyed. "I have no problem with you following any case, I just want to know why you insisted on having Gu Huai accompany you."

Just as Hou Hao had said, Wu Feilin found it difficult to refuse Ling Yue's request.

This is because Lingyue's role is irreplaceable by anyone else in the team.

With her writing skills and the appreciation of her superiors, she could be transferred directly to the provincial department at any time if she wanted to.

If it weren't for Lingyue's childhood dream of becoming a frontline police officer, and the fact that he had a fairly good personal relationship with Lingyue's father, such a precious child would never have been chosen by the First Brigade.

That's why a team member was notified of last night's meeting at the captain level.

Even so, Wu Feilin still made a final struggle.

He really didn't want Gu Huai to go to the front line alone. Even if he had to go, he wanted an experienced old man to watch over him.

Otherwise, who knows what kind of trouble Gu Huai would get himself into?

Faced with Wu Feilin's question, Ling Yue remained silent for a while before expressing her opinion.

This viewpoint led Wu Feilin to change his mind.

"I sensed a similar quality in Gu Huai; he was able to pinpoint the exact direction of a case by examining subtle clues."

"So...you think Gu Huai's judgment on this case is correct?"

Wu Feilin had to take Ling Yue's opinion seriously. "You also believe there are two groups involved in this case?"

"Yes." Ling Yue nodded calmly, "However, these are just my intuitions. If the captain thinks they are inappropriate, he doesn't have to take them into consideration."

"Since you already know it's intuition, why do you still insist?" Wu Feilin looked at Ling Yue with some helplessness. "I believe you know that the last thing we can trust when solving cases is intuition."

"That's why I went to the front lines to collect evidence to prove my intuition."

Seeing that the topic had returned to where it started, Wu Feilin nodded helplessly.

"Alright, since you insist, I'll agree."

"Thank you, Captain."

"Don't thank me too soon," Wu Feilin said, staring at Ling Yue. "The old rule still applies: report any news first, and absolutely do not act on your own."

"I understand." Ling Yue said, tidying up the plates on the table, then stood up and walked out of the cafeteria. "I'll go prepare first, Captain, please continue eating."

After saying that, she walked out on her own.

Watching Ling Yue's departing figure, Wu Feilin couldn't help but complain.

"Who gave Gu Huai that bewitching potion?"

After saying this, Wu Feilin made a decision in his heart.

Once this case is over, Gu Huai absolutely cannot be allowed to live!

Whoever wants him can have him; I can't stand this kid.
