Chapter 34
"Master Luo Xia, your imbalance in your studies is quite serious!"
When I went in, I saw that Kano was extremely serious. He was wearing a monocle and was writing and drawing while asking Rorschach questions.
Overall, thanks to the original owner's diligent study, Master Cano did not stump Rorschach in terms of magical theory.
However, the following issues revealed a serious educational divide between the Holy Kingdom's Magic Tower and the Imperial Royal Academy.
How many times have you read "The Complete Book of Lunar Phases"?
"I've heard of it."
"The Interpretation of Dreams and the Ocean of Consciousness?"
"I think I've heard of it before."
"The Twelve Recitations of Crowley?"
"Never heard of it." Now Rorschach was sweating a little.
"."
Kano simply put down his pen and asked impatiently, "So what books did you read at the academy?"
Rorschach retrieved the precious, hardcover tome from his storage ring:
Bang! (From "The Complete Book of Elementary Spells")
Bang! (Standard Magic Circle Geometric Analysis)
Bang! *The Anatomy of the Human Body's Magical Circuits*
...
"Stop! I said stop! There's no room on the table!" Kano was startled by the resounding tone. He shakily opened a book and read a page.
Turn it over, and then turn it over again.
Finally, the archmage lamented, "I really misjudged! What a piece of trash Caroline recommended!"
"Grand Master Kano, how dare you, a top professor, resort to personal attacks!"
"Can the kind of mages your empire trains even be considered mages? They're practically stonemasons and artillerymen! Where has the beauty of magic gone?!"
Rorschach said seriously, "Great power is beautiful, high energy efficiency is beautiful."
Kano gritted his teeth: "You better behave yourself, or the Tower of Stars will never admit graduates of the Imperial Royal Magic Academy again!"
After undergoing rigorous testing by Master Kano, Master Luo Xia finally received a set of class schedules.
Rorschach's timetable was unusual; it had two colors:
The dark green handwriting represents the lessons he needs to take, while the deep red handwriting represents the lessons he needs to substitute for for Cano.
According to the custom of this world, a ten-day cycle is followed by five days of classes and teaching others, four days of helping out in Master Kano's research lab, and the last day of rest.
Red and green, what a terrible combination! Luo Xia still doesn't know what's going on in the research lab, but he hopes it won't be like his previous life where he had to clock in at eight and finish at ten-thirty at night.
"Oh, right, there's one more thing," Kano called after Rorschach before he left.
"Valuwana hasn't been very peaceful in recent years, so you absolutely must not participate in any activities where, well, some radical young people gather. Even the Tower of Stars is having a hard time getting people out of trouble in this matter."
"Okay, I understand." Actually, Luo Xia didn't fully understand, but he seemed to have guessed a little bit.
"Greetings, fellow apprentices. I am your substitute teacher, Rorschach, and from today onwards, I will be teaching you 'The History of Magic' in place of Professor Cano."
Rorschach wrote his name on the stone slab.
Simply injecting ether (when in Rome, do as the Romans do; in the Holy Kingdom, we won't use the term "magic") into a special willow stick allows one to leave a mark while writing, and simply switching the end of the stick erases it. Rorschach liked this feature very much—no need to collect chalk dust.
At first, the apprentices were very interested in the new teacher. The young man on the podium had a somewhat immature face, and he looked younger than many of the people sitting below.
The Magic Tower doesn't strictly adhere to a fixed timeframe for accepting apprentices, but graduation requires completing a certain number of credits and passing a mage examination organized by the Magic Guild. Under this rigorous system, there are currently over twenty apprentices being taught by sixteen-year-old teachers.
It's normal for some people to feel resentful, and there's a natural animosity between the people of the Holy Kingdom and the people of the Empire.
Now I understand what it feels like to be a teacher of a casual university class. As Rorschach lectured, he watched the students below start doing their own things and sleeping. The circular classroom was filled with a relaxed and lazy atmosphere.
Even I have my day when I'm teaching a mediocre course. If the general history course weren't mediocre, Professor Carnot wouldn't have had Rorschach substitute for it.
As someone who had been a student who always skipped elective courses and sometimes skipped required courses, Luo Xia felt embarrassed to do anything to his apprentices. Looking around, he saw only two or three students listening attentively in the front row.
"In the 37th year of the Gregorian calendar, the Church of Light and Order launched its first Holy Expedition, repelling the invasion of the continent by the believers of the invisible god."
This series of massive battles not only defended the continent, but also successfully laid the foundation for the approximate territory of the Holy Kingdom and the southern kingdoms after the collapse of the old empire.
The Church's power and authority reached their zenith, and Saint Pepin, the first king of the Holy Kingdom, was crowned by the Pope.
To resist pressure from the Church, the Four Elements Tower, along with the Tower of Light and the Tower of Darkness, formed the first intercontinental organization of magicians, which was the prototype of today's magic guilds.
Feeling annoyed that no one was listening to his dry mouth, Rorschach thought of a tactic he used to hate: "Could any lady or gentleman talk about the historical significance of the First Holy Expedition, based on what I just said?"
Sure enough, only the students in the front row were flipping through books to find the answer to this question.
"Excuse me, teacher, could you please get your bearings? Why are you asking us difficult questions in a class like this?"
A burly apprentice in the audience spoke up, and the others followed suit with whispers, causing a commotion in the classroom.
Rorschach noticed that everyone else was wearing apprentice robes, but he alone had his overcoat open as a cloak, revealing the fine clothes he wore underneath, highlighting his noble status.
"What kind of course does this student think 'A General History of Magic' is?"
Before the troublemaker could reply, Rorschach said, "It's optional, right? After all, knowing history won't make your magic any more profound."
Bang! Rorschach slammed his thick textbook shut and held it up: "The content I just covered didn't include much magic. I started by talking about the situation after the collapse of the old empire, how the Church launched the first Holy Crusade, and only then did I talk about how the magic guilds were established under duress."
It is clear that there is no isolated history of magic; we are all part of human history, and even the history of the world.
What does it mean to be a magician? Miracles, power, glory... Does power equate to status?
Some apprentices seem to dream of becoming sorcerers, having endless money, countless servants, and the king kissing their boots…
You haven't considered the role of mages in this world, haven't thought about the situations mages have faced in the past and present, haven't noticed the differences between the mages of the Holy Kingdom and those of the Empire, even though they are right in front of you, let alone pondered why they are different.
If you think about it, you won't think this course is unimportant.
Perhaps most of you here, like I was when I was an apprentice, yearn for a bright future, yet you fail to reflect on that vision and realize that it is an illusion that will shatter after you succeed or fail in the mage examination.
Many spellcasters take everything the world gives us for granted. Just because we're bastards who manipulate ether? Why?
I'm not asking you to find a god to thank Him profusely. Please look for the answers in history yourself, instead of ignoring the past and what is happening in the tower, and then being completely ignorant and indifferent to what will happen in the future.
get out of class dismissed.
It feels so good to lecture others! Rorschach walked out of the classroom with his textbooks in his arms.
No drafts available, freshly written, please feel free to point out any errors.
