Chapter 56
Night Attack
Chapter 56 Night Attack
While Gojo Satoru was pondering, Mo Fan also chatted with the girl for a while.
"Fu Da... oh no, Zhang Xiaohou, I thought you were going to be a blockhead for the rest of your life. Your friend has come to pick you up." Su Xiaoluo's face was full of smiles.
"I'm not leaving," Zhang Xiaohou said hurriedly, as if afraid of losing something.
"How can that be? Your friend said you're a soldier, he'll take you back for treatment, maybe your amnesia will be cured?" Su Xiaoluo said, raising an eyebrow.
"I..." Zhang Xiaohou didn't know how to express what he wanted to say, so he just stared at Su Xiaoluo.
Mo Fan, standing to the side, could easily tell that Zhang Xiaohou, after losing his memory, seemed to be very dependent on this girl.
However, thinking about it, it makes sense. Zhang Xiaohou had so many injuries that had turned into scars, and there was even a long centipede-like scar on the back of his head that stretched to near his cheek. He survived entirely because he was lucky enough to meet Su Xiaoluo, a female healer.
"Why don't you villagers come with us to the ancient capital? It might not be safe here," Gojo Satoru said as he stepped forward.
He didn't understand why the villagers of these villages were still outside the safe zone, and why the military mages and the magic association didn't care?
"No, our village is protected by the well god. Normal undead won't attack us unless they are mutated undead," Su Xiaoluo explained.
The villagers grew up drinking special well water; as long as they drank a certain amount of well water each month, they would not be attacked by normal undead.
"You believe in such vague and unfounded things in your village?" Mo Fan was very puzzled.
It's unbelievable that someone would actually take something that sounds like a joke seriously.
Gojo Satoru was somewhat surprised, as he wasn't very familiar with these local customs.
"The well god is real. Our village has been able to exist for so many years because of its protection," Su Xiaoluo said earnestly.
"Perhaps what you say is true, but entrusting one's life to a vague god is just a coward's way of survival, while I will only be a strong one!" Gojo Satoru said dismissively.
He never believed in any gods; only absolute power could put his mind at ease.
"It's getting late. Why don't you spend the night here and return to the ancient capital tomorrow?" Su Xiaoluo didn't reply but pointed to the sky and said.
"Alright, you guys should think about it too. This isn't the Peaceful Realm after all. If the undead riot in large numbers, you might die," Gojo Satoru reminded him again.
If it weren't for the villagers saving Zhang Xiaohou, he wouldn't have bothered with this matter at all.
The disaster in Hangzhou taught him a lesson: in this world, the weak are just cannon fodder, and if those in power are ruthless and insane, then cannon fodder are merely dispensable.
"Hmm." Su Xiaoluo replied nonchalantly.
Seeing this, Gojo no longer tried to persuade them; it seemed that years of comfort had corrupted their hearts.
……
At night, Gojo Satoru and Mo Fan stayed in the same wooden house as Zhang Xiaohou.
Gojo Satoru lay on the bed, his eyes slightly narrowed as he pondered something.
Mo Fan and Zhang Xiaohou were both asleep. Mo Fan's sleep was due to the emotional turmoil, while Zhang Xiaohou simply needed to rest because of his previous serious injuries.
"Oh no! Oh no!!"
"Quickly, hide! Hide right now!!"
Suddenly, a panicked shout came from outside.
Wu Tiao Wu opened his eyes instantly, put on his coat and stood up abruptly, startling Mo Fan and Zhang Xiaohou awake as well.
"You guys continue to rest, I'll go."
After saying that, Gojo Satoru left the room and headed towards the source of the sound.
Upon hearing this, Mo Fan pulled Zhang Xiaohou back to sleep. Although the latter didn't feel well, the sense of familiarity emanating from Mo Fan made him unwilling to pull away.
In just a few breaths, they arrived at the village entrance, where a rotting corpse was steadily approaching the village elder who was guarding it.
Several young villagers nearby, holding hoes, dared not attack the rotting corpse; they simply stood by and watched intently.
Just as the village elder was about to be caught by the rotting corpse, the corpse was suddenly split in two, and blood flowed all over the ground.
It was Gojo Satoru who made the move, arriving just in time.
At the same time, the village chief and several villagers also rushed over, and their faces turned pale when they saw this bloody scene.
"What's going on? None of you are drinking the well water from Kunjing?" Village Chief Xie Sang asked, frowning.
"Of course we drank it, but for some reason, these undead still attack us... They're probably mutated undead!" said the villager who was trembling while holding a hoe for protection.
"No, this isn't a mutant undead, it's just a regular undead," Gojo Satoru said calmly, glancing at the undead corpse.
"It must be cursed, our Huacun must be cursed! I told you we shouldn't do that kind of thing..." A middle-aged villager was so frightened that he couldn't speak coherently.
"..." Gojo Satoru paused slightly upon hearing this, then asked, "What kind of thing?"
Before the middle-aged villager could answer, village chief Xie Sang glared at him fiercely and said, "Stop talking nonsense and wake up the others."
"No need. Since I'm here, I won't let the dead get close." Although Gojo Satoru had a vague feeling that these people were hiding something, he was still prepared to lend a hand.
Before the villagers could react, Gojo Satoru appeared outside the village, and the spirits that had been hiding around the village were all brought out.
The sky was dark until Gojo Satoru used magic to bring them out, and the villagers realized that the area around their village was already teeming with the dead!
"How could this be? Our village clearly has well water for protection!"
"How can so many undead be lurking here!"
The villagers were in a panic. It was understandable that only one ghost appeared, but why did the ghosts around the village ignore the well water and ambush them?
Are they no longer protected by the well water? Doesn't that mean they are a flock of sheep that have fallen into the territory of wolves?
"What's the panic? We still have this outsider's help. At worst, we'll just move tomorrow!" Xie Sang, the village head, angrily rebuked the crowd.
The entire massacre didn't last long; after all, there were only a dozen or so undead, and it only took Gojo Satoru a few swings of his hand to perform spatial slashes.
……
the next morning.
Village chief Xie Sang convened all the villagers to discuss the relocation of the entire village.
"Leave the village?!" some of the older villagers exclaimed in disbelief.
"Yes, the village is no longer safe. Last night, many undead were lurking around the village. If it weren't for Fu Da's friends still here, our village would probably have been devoured," Xie Sang, the village head, sighed.
"I see." Su Xiaoluo nodded when she saw that even the village chief seemed helpless.
"I also think it would be better for you to leave this dangerous place as soon as possible," Mo Fan advised.
"That's right, if you want to leave now, Mo Fan and I can still help you," Gojo Satoru said earnestly to the group.
"That's settled then, we must move!" Village Chief Xie Sang slammed his hand on the chopping board with the air of authority he should have.
"Alright, Zhang Xiaohou, let's head to the ancient capital together." Su Xiaoluo smiled.
Zhang Xiaohou nodded repeatedly, clearly having become Su Xiaoluo's follower; wherever she went, he went.
Mo Fan looked at Zhang Xiaohou's pig-like appearance and shook his head helplessly.
Wu Tiao Wu smiled wryly, still not understanding what the thing on Zhang Xiaohou's head was.
I'll have to ask someone when I get back to the ancient capital.
