Chapter 14
This situation requires amputation
Just as Garr reached the corner near the church entrance, he saw Selena standing in front of it. She was carrying two baskets of bread in one arm and, seeing Garr approach, presented the baskets to him.
"Gal, I've bought these dark breads, I don't know if it's enough."
Garr remembered that there were twelve people in the church, and that the bread would be enough for them to have a full meal, so he nodded.
"That's enough. Thank you for your hard work, Selena."
Selena shook her head slightly, remained silent for a while, and then told him what she had discovered:
"I bought these in the western market. Food is very expensive there. These breads cost around 5 copper coins each. These two baskets of black bread alone cost me one silver coin."
"When I first arrived at Nidhoggburg, I went to a beautifully decorated bakery where the cheaper bread was only 2 copper coins. Logically, as a commercial hub, Blacktwilight should have lower prices, but it turned out to be twice as much."
Garr echoed this sentiment, realizing that the exorbitant price must be suspicious. Based on Andrew's understanding of Zane, even with his poor governance, he couldn't have destroyed such a stable base as Blacktwilight City. Perhaps some powerful faction within Blacktwilight City was secretly monopolizing power...
But this was just speculation. Gar suppressed his doubts and looked into the church. Right now, it was more important to appease the refugees and solidify their faith. As for the hidden reasons behind the soaring prices and the refugees, he could make plans after things had stabilized somewhat.
"Selena, I need your help later." Garr looked at Selena and began to speak earnestly: "Because the God of Light's power is currently weak, my healing abilities are very limited, but I promised to help one of the missing-legged refugees, and I can only rely on your help."
As he spoke, he raised his hand, which immediately emitted gentle white light, demonstrating his light healing abilities to Selena.
He thought Selena would be angry because he had made a promise behind her back, but Selena wasn't angry at all. Instead, she put one hand on her hip and smiled.
"I knew you'd need me to do something for you! No problem, leave the treatment to me!"
Garr didn't quite understand her reaction, but since his fears hadn't come true, he was happy to be at ease.
Gar reached out and picked up one of the baskets, while holding Selena's hand with his other hand, and walked into the church.
Inside the church, the refugees were still huddled together, watching Bishop Gard whisper with the priestess outside. Some were confused, while others worried about not getting food, and still others were angry, thinking that Gard was just some noble young master who liked to play the role of a priest and was making fun of them.
However, all these doubts vanished instantly when Gar and Selena walked in with the food.
Looking at the overflowing black bread, they couldn't help but swallow hard; it was food they hadn't tasted in a long time. Normally, they had to make their way to the Temple of War early in the dark, enduring long stretches of cold wind, just to get a bowl of thin porridge that was practically devoid of wheat. And because of the priest's perverse taste, the porridge was even mixed with sand, making it almost inedible.
Now, all they need to do is listen to the oracle of a god of light here to obtain this large piece of black bread, which is almost like a dream to them.
For a moment, they all stood obediently together, looking respectfully at Gar.
Garr did not rush to distribute the bread, nor did he begin to read the oracle of the God of Light. Instead, he first stepped forward to the lame man and said:
"Just now, I promised that the treatment you received would be carried out by this priestess, Selena."
Then, he looked at Selena and pursed his lips:
"Selena, please take care of this person's injuries."
The cripple carefully looked Selena up and down. She was about twenty years old, dressed in exquisite priest's robes. Although her skin was somewhat dark, she was very beautiful and otherworldly. Her features were soft, and she looked delicate and frail, making it hard to believe in her abilities.
But when his gaze fell on her chest, his doubts vanished completely; there was a badge exquisitely crafted with diamonds.
A Diamond-level Adventure Badge. This means her priest rank has reached over forty, a rank typically reserved for captains in the military. She has achieved this level at such a young age.
As the cripple thought this, his heart pounded. If it were a diamond-level priest, could his crippled leg be healed? Perhaps... perhaps it really was possible.
His hopes grew ever stronger, and he eagerly pulled out the twisted leg hidden beneath his body and placed it in front of Selena.
"Great Priestess Selena, please have mercy on me and heal my broken leg."
Selena looked at the leg, and just by observing, she had already made her judgment. The leg injury had probably been there for several months; the broken bone was exposed, and scabbed skin held the bone in place... After all, she was a priestess, more skilled in protection than healing.
Selena remained silent for a long time before finally shaking her head helplessly and sighing.
"I'm sorry, your leg is completely necrotic, there's nothing I can do."
The cripple's heart sank into an icy abyss, but a glimmer of light still flickered in his eyes, constantly shifting between Selena and Gar:
"Is...is there really no other way...?"
"If you're willing, I can help you with the amputation, so your damaged leg won't become a burden. Later, you can find a blacksmith to make a prosthetic leg so you can stand up again," Selena said, offering the best solution she could think of.
The cripple paused slightly upon hearing Selena's suggestion. He thought of the prosthetic limbs forged by blacksmiths. When he was a guard, there had been cases of comrades losing limbs, and he had later commissioned a blacksmith to make prosthetic limbs. Those things were indeed comparable to real limbs, but the price was extremely expensive. As a vagrant, he simply couldn't afford a prosthetic leg.
He hesitated and lowered his head, looking at his twisted broken leg. It had accompanied him through countless days and nights, guarding the city and resisting monsters... After it was broken, it became his biggest burden. His crippled leg forced him to move and crawl on the ground like an insect.
Rather than being paralyzed for the rest of his life, he should cut it off and stand up again. Moreover, the fact that a diamond-level priest is willing to help him heal is already an immense favor, and he cannot give up this opportunity.
Thinking of this, he gritted his teeth, his eyes no longer filled with confusion, and firmly said:
"Thank you, Priestess Selena. We'll do as you say. Thank you for your help."
