Chapter 35
Please Don't Judge Us with the Arrogance of Noble Ladies
"Is the Cardissa family in danger?"
For a moment, Gar didn't understand Icarus's words, which sounded like an epic quest being issued, and stood there dumbfounded.
"Huh? I just talked to Lucia last week. The Cardiac family was doing just fine then, wasn't they?"
"Speaking of which, this has some connection to you as well," Cardia began to explain.
From Gar demanding the Dragon Knight identity token from Lucia, to the Duchy of Roderick making a big fuss about Gussenburg due to the necromancer invasion, and then to King Charles reclaiming the sword and medal symbolizing Duke Cardissa's power.
"Next, Martin, the son of Duke Roderick, will be the popular choice to take over the title of Duke of Gusenberg."
"And what about Duke Cadisia?" Gal asked. "My father, Hector. How is he now? And my sister Lucia?"
Kadisia closed her eyes and said after a long while, "He is currently under house arrest in the Duke of Gusenburg's mansion. Once Martin takes over, Hector will be imprisoned. As for your sister Lucia... she is currently in Blacktwilight City, trapped in Zane's mansion."
"Why is Lucia in Black Dust City too?"
"Duke Roderick wanted to arrange a marriage between Martin and Lucia, but Hector refused the request and sent Lucia to Zane instead."
Garr was silent for a moment, then shook his head with a self-deprecating smile: "Since this matter started because of me, I have to do something about it."
"My lord, what should I do?"
Icarus didn't rush to answer, but instead puffed out his chest: "Now do you believe that I am an all-knowing and all-powerful god?"
"I believe you, I believe you, God, please help me!" Gar felt like he was coaxing a child.
"You'll have to figure out the methods yourself. See you next time."
Icarus smiled slyly, spread his wings, and disappeared from the room, leaving Gar alone, bewildered in the wind.
"......" Okay, okay, you're going to praise me and then run away, huh?
Gar sighed. Since Icarus hadn't given a direct answer, he'd have to figure it out himself.
Will they be able to save the Cardissa family from their dire straits?
The Duke's title was personally revoked by King Charles. To regain the Duke of Gusenberg's position, one would have to confront King Charles directly. Gar, being of low status, certainly couldn't do it.
It seems that all he can do now is rescue his father from the fire in this life.
As for how to save him... Garth pondered for a moment and decided to go find Zane first.
After all, if the Duke of Gusenberg were to change hands, Zain's earldom would most likely be stripped away.
If he knew what was going on, he'd probably be in a terrible predicament right now.
Now, if we can offer timely assistance and potentially form an alliance...
The image of Zane's madness from their first meeting lingered in Gal's mind.
Is there really a chance of becoming an ally when dealing with someone who won't even let you finish your sentence?
There's probably no chance.
However, Garr currently has no other conditions or better ideas.
With the idea of going to take a look anyway, Garr decided to head to the Earl's mansion.
However, before that, Gar opened Selena's small clinic.
"Selena, I need your help."
-
Zain's mansion.
Lucia sat in front of the dressing table with her wrists bound by anti-magic shackles.
The magic-suppressing shackles imprisoned her magic, preventing her from using the blessings of the god of war.
Although I don't know why there's this thing in Zane's mansion.
I'm under house arrest now, too.
Lucia gave a self-deprecating laugh and turned to look at the beastman girl who stood timidly in front of the door.
"I remember your name is Phoebe, right?"
"Yes...yes, Miss Lucia." Phoebe instinctively clutched the mark on the back of her hand. "Is there anything you need? Phoebe will do it now."
"There's nothing I need." Lucia shook her head. "I remember your orc race lives on the southern continent of Trevel, which is tens of thousands of miles away. I'd like to know, how did you get here?"
"I was...sold here by slave traders." Phoebe lowered her head, a few strands of grayish-brown down falling from her forehead. "Phoebe remembers it was around the harvest festival."
"They stormed into my tribe and captured us. Phoebe was blindfolded and it seems she was thrown onto a boat, then drifted and drifted until she arrived here..."
"Phoebe was branded with slave marks and thrown into a cage like a toy for them to see... Eventually, she was bought by her master and came here."
Phoebe speaks like a child; no, she *is* a child.
Lucia bit her lip lightly; what Phoebe had gone through was self-evident.
She felt she should do something instead of continuing to be confined here.
She had to do something, otherwise what was the point of cowardly fleeing the Duke's mansion?
She walked to the door and looked down at Phoebe, whose ears were drooping.
"Phoebe, let me out."
Phoebe raised her hand, shaking her head from side to side like a rattle-drum: "No, no! Master told Phoebe to keep an eye on you and not to go out. If you go out, Phoebe will be sold to slave traders." She thought of that dark cage, which was far more terrifying than this place. She didn't want to go back to those dark and hopeless days.
This gave Phoebe an unprecedented amount of courage, and she pushed Lucia away.
Lucia took a few steps back, opened her mouth, and said in disbelief, "I want to save you."
"No need, Miss Lucia... this is enough." Phoebe's voice choked with emotion. "This is already very good."
Juno listened silently outside the door until there was no more sound from inside before knocking.
"Miss Lucia, my master asked me to prepare lunch for you. I'm coming in."
She opened the door, and Lucia was already sitting back at the dressing table. Phoebe walked over to her and placed the food from the plate in front of her one by one.
A bowl of broth, a piece of roast meat, and some bread.
"Please have your meal." Juno cleared away the plates and prepared to leave.
"Were you also sold into slavery here?" Lucia asked, somewhat distraught.
In response to her question, Juno scoffed, "Beautiful noble lady, please don't judge us with your eyes. We're doing just fine now."
"Is that so...?"
"Well then, enjoy your meal." Juno turned and walked out of the room.
Lucia's current residence is on the far north side of the mansion. Juno needs to deliver the plates to the kitchen on the south side. She walks quickly with her short legs and happens to hear the knocking sound as she passes the mansion's gate.
Juno raised her hand, pulled the doorknob, and pushed the door open.
A dignified man dressed in monk's robes stood at the door. He had relaxed eyebrows, wore frameless glasses, and appeared intellectual and gentle.
"Hello, young lady." He crouched down to Juno's eye level. "Excuse me, is this the Earl's residence?"
"May I ask who you are?"
"Oh! I forgot to introduce myself." He reached out and patted Juno's head:
"My name is Gar Hawke, a bishop of the Church of Light. I've come to visit Lord Zane. Could you please announce my arrival, young lady?"
