Chapter 2

A Letter from My Sister

Lu Chen stood against the wall on the street, looking no different from the idle hooligans on the street, so he did not attract the attention of the two men.

After the man in black went inside, Lu Chen looked around and, seeing that no one was paying attention to him, quickly made his way to the back door of the textile shop.

"Could that mouse be lying to me?"

Lu Chen stroked his chin, unsure of what to do.

Didi!Didi!Didi!

The windows are openwork and carved, and there is a piece of cloth to block the cold wind from blowing into the room.

By the window, Lu Chen heard a sound coming from inside the room, a sound he knew all too well.

Isn't that the radio from the communications department?

Upon hearing this sound, Lu Chen knew that he had spotted a big fish!

If there's a radio station, then there must be a codebook!

Thinking of this, Lu Chen immediately retreated to the side of the street, found a phone booth, inserted phone coins, and called his team leader to report the news.

Back then, making a phone call wasn't like in later times where you toss in a coin; you had to go to a special place to buy phone coins.

"Feed?"

A strange man's voice came from the other end of the phone; it wasn't the team leader, Xu Jianming's, voice.

But Lu Chen couldn't care less about that at the moment and told the person on the other end of the phone what he had discovered.

"Very good. From now on, I will be your group's new group leader, Wang Yan. Xu Jianming has been transferred. You continue to keep an eye on things. I will personally lead a team there immediately."

After I finished speaking, the other end of the phone hung up immediately.

Xu Jianming has been transferred?

Lu Chen felt a surge of joy. His old boss, whom he couldn't stand, had been transferred, and he had made a great contribution on the first day of the new boss's term. Would he still have to worry about not having a good life in the future?

When they reached the street, Lu Chen casually ordered a bowl of food and sat down to stare at the textile shop.

"The bright moon shines on the ancient alley."

Several men in black coats walked up to Lu Chen, and the one in the lead walked up to him.

Lu Chen looked up and saw that the person had very good skin, unlike those of them who often went on missions.

Which rich kid is here to get his resume polished this time?

Thinking it over, Lu Chen uttered the secret code: "A gentle breeze brushes against the old wall."

"Is it in there?"

Wang Yan sat down next to Lu Chen, glanced at the textile shop, and asked a question.

"Yes, I'm sure of it. I clearly heard a radio coming from inside the house. It must be a spy."

Lu Chen looked confident. Hearing his words, Wang Yan no longer hesitated. He exchanged a glance with the people he brought, and the group headed towards the room.

Lu Chen followed at the very back; he didn't really want to come along.

Who knows if the other side has a gun?

But as a team member, how can I hide behind when the team leader is taking action personally?

Moreover, he was a new team leader, and Lu Chen didn't want him to be like Xu Jianming, who would scold him for ten minutes over the smallest thing.

dong dong dong.

Upon arriving at the house, Wang Yan knocked on the door. Two team members stood on either side of him, while Lu Chen stood behind Wang Yan.

"Just do it! Alive!"

Wang Yan whispered to everyone, "Once the door opens, we'll make our move."

The door opened a crack, and Lu Chen could clearly see that it was the man in black who opened it.

"Let's do it!"

Wang Yan had already entered the doorway with half of his body inside. The man in black tried to close the door but found that he couldn't, so he turned around and tried to run away.

The textile shop was cramped, so the only way to escape was through the window. Lu Chen had a large group of people, and they caught the man in black almost instantly.

"Team leader, we have guns!"

A tall, dark-skinned team member pinned down the man in black, reached for his lower back, and discovered a handgun.

"That's it, he's definitely a Japanese spy. Hold him tight, let's go inside and check!"

"Where?"

As he spoke, Wang Yan pulled out a gun from his waist and looked at Lu Chen.

Lu Chen knew that this person was asking him where the radio station was.

"In this direction."

How did Lu Chen know where the radio station was? He could only point out a general direction based on the location of the window.

Wang Yan led a few men, guns in hand, cautiously heading in that direction, while Lu Chen searched the house thoroughly.

Seeing his expression, Wang Yan knew exactly what he was doing and immediately frowned.

However, with Japanese spies in the air and the radio station Lu Chen mentioned, this is a good opportunity to make a name for himself, so Wang Yan has no time to worry about Lu Chen right now.

After searching around, Lu Chen didn't find anything of value. If he had found something, he could have made a small profit.

Wang Yan then led his men over and discovered that there was another compartment inside the wall. They eventually captured the textile shop owner inside the compartment.

"Very good, what's your name?"

After returning to the base with the two captured Japanese spies, Wang Yan approached Lu Chen and asked him questions.

"Reporting to the team leader, my name is Lu Chen."

Lu Chen immediately stood up straight and introduced himself.

Seeing Lu Chen so energetic, and knowing that he had already accomplished something by capturing two Japanese spies, Wang Yan was also very happy.

"Here, this is your bonus for this time, 600 legal tender."

Wang Yan readily took out 600 French currency, which Lu Chen accepted without hesitation.

600 yuan, and that's legal tender!

Stuffing the money into his pocket, Lu Chen looked at the scene in the room in front of him and felt a chill run down his spine.

The man in black was bound, and next to him was Wu Wenbiao, the head of the interrogation department!

In Lu Chen's view, this guy was terrifying; he could use any inhumane punishment on Japanese spies.

"This is terrifying, I'd better leave."

Lu Chen took two deep breaths. Although he didn't consider the Japanese spies to be human, the sight of such horrific torture made him feel physically uncomfortable.

Wang Yan nodded and did not stop him. He understood Lu Chen's feelings. If it weren't for the codebook he was looking for, he wouldn't want to witness this bloody scene.

"Lu Chen, here is a letter for you, from Shanghai."

Shanghai Stock Exchange?

Lu Chen took the letter from the messenger, somewhat puzzled.

Do I have any relatives in Shanghai?

As far as he knew, the original owner only had one younger sister, who had married early and was said to be living in Sujiang. Apart from that, she had no other relatives in the world.

Despite his doubts, Lu Chen opened the envelope and his heart skipped a beat when he saw the sender's name at the bottom.

Lu Xiulian...

The sender's name was Lu Xiulian, who was his younger sister.

My younger sister got married early and had a lovely niece with her husband. I only met her once and haven't been in touch with her for many years.

Thinking of this, Lu Chen hurriedly opened the envelope and began to read the letter.

A few years ago, Su Jiang was caught in the war. Her brother-in-law died, and her sister and niece fled to Shanghai. They survived by working as servants for a wealthy family.

But recently, a wealthy family has rejected her, and she and her child haven't eaten for several days. She came to her own brother for help.

This is the entire contents of the letter. The handwriting is very neat. My sister, who is illiterate, must have had someone else write it for her.

After reading the letter, Lu Chen became even more anxious. His brother-in-law was dead, and his sister was struggling to make a living in Shanghai with her niece.

In this world, it's easy to imagine how difficult it is for a woman to raise a child alone.

Lu Chen didn't have time to think about anything else and ran to Wang Yan's office. He had to get to the mother and daughter!
