Chapter 25
Yes, it's definitely possible!
Lu Chen wanted to persuade him, but Liu Jie refused to get up no matter what. In his world, the debt of saving a life was the greatest thing, and morality was the most important thing.
Faced with the stubborn Liu Jie, Lu Chen sighed and tacitly agreed to his idea of repaying him.
"Squeak squeak".
Soon after, Rat One returned with Rat Two... Rat Six. Lu Chen casually made up an excuse to send Liu Jie away, saying that he would go to see him tomorrow.
Liu Jie found it a little strange, but there was nothing unusual about a few rats appearing on the street.
After Liu Jie had completely disappeared from the street, Lu Chen squatted down and picked up the six rats with both hands.
"Rat Two... Rat Six, the five of you each take some rats and follow those people who are different from me down the sewers. You must personally come back and report to me on every move and action they take."
"Rat One, you're in charge of following me. I'll give you a code. When I give you the code, you just need to remember the scent of the person in front of me."
Lu Chen assigned tasks to the mice one by one. After squeaking twice, the mice agreed and disappeared in a flash.
The artillery fire from the Chinese-controlled area opposite the French Concession had ceased, leaving only plumes of smoke rising.
It was still late at night, and dozens of disheveled soldiers were crouching in a dilapidated high-rise building in the Chinese-controlled area.
The wall in front of us had been blasted open by artillery fire, leaving a large gap.
"Commander, it seems the Japanese have stopped their attack."
A soldier in a blue uniform peeked out from the gap but did not see any Japanese soldiers.
"Don't let your guard down; remain vigilant."
Wang Deming roared, holding his gun straight, his nerves taut.
More than an hour passed and there was still no sign of the Japanese troops, so Wang Deming finally breathed a sigh of relief.
"We have a commanding position here, and those damned Japanese devils should know we're difficult to take down, so they've retreated for now. Let's all rest for a while."
Wang Deming put down his gun and leaned wearily against the wall. They hadn't slept for two days and one night since they arrived in Shanghai to join the battle.
Everyone was exhausted, and many soldiers leaned on each other and fell asleep.
Wang Deming didn't sleep, nor did he dare to. He wanted to be able to fight back in time should the Japanese army launch another counterattack.
"Commander, do you think we can get out of here alive?"
A young soldier who looked to be no more than twenty years old sat down next to Wang Deming.
The young soldier had bandages wrapped around his head, and one eye was hidden under the bandages; it had been damaged by Japanese artillery fire.
"Xiao Li, don't be so pessimistic. You still have a wife waiting for you at home. We'll definitely get out of here alive!"
When he said this, Wang Deming almost believed it himself. The Japanese army had already surrounded their building, and there was no way they could break out.
Xiao Li forced an awkward smile, stared blankly at the gun in his hand, and after a long while, spoke lifelessly.
"Commander, do you still remember why I joined the army?"
Wang Deming was taken aback, then waved his hand, "Oh, I don't remember. There are so many brothers, how could I possibly remember every single one of them?"
That is indeed the case, but Xiao Li's situation is somewhat special. Wang Deming had a very deep understanding of his purpose in joining the army.
Xiao Li's hometown is a small village on the border of Sichuan. His family has been honest farmers for generations. He has four brothers, all of whom are tall and strong, and he is the youngest.
His parents and three older brothers doted on him, and even when it came to choosing a wife, they prioritized him.
After the war broke out, the three older brothers joined the army. The eldest brother was brought back by his comrades with a severed arm, the second brother had a leg, and the third brother only had a blood-stained piece of tattered clothing.
Because of the deaths of her three older brothers, her mother went blind from crying and passed away a few months later. Her father, unable to bear the thought of leaving his youngest son behind, persevered.
Finally, the Japanese army discovered the village and committed atrocities including burning, killing, looting, and pillaging.
The father, he, and his wife hid in a cave in the mountains, and were discovered by several Japanese soldiers passing by.
Upon seeing his wife, he was overcome with lust and wanted to do something inhuman. He and his father fought desperately, but the Japanese army had guns.
In the end, his wife still suffered a terrible fate. His father was brutally murdered by the Japanese army while trying to cover his and his wife's escape.
He joined the army to avenge his family by killing the Japanese devils, and also because he didn't want to see his wife again.
Xiao Li's wife is a girl from his village. She's a good girl who's easy to get along with, but Xiao Li has always felt uneasy about that incident.
"Commander, a letter came from home a few days ago; it was sent by my wife."
Xiao Li forced a bitter smile and pulled out a crumpled piece of paper. He couldn't cry now; he had already wailed all night when he received the letter.
"Alright, don't you want to avenge your parents? And your three older brothers, perk up and kill a few more Japanese devils!"
"Sigh, there are only a few left. You're lucky to have gotten them."
Wang Deming took out a small iron box from the inner pocket of his clothes. Inside the box were three cigarettes, one of which was only half-smoked. It was obvious that he had stubbed it out after smoking it halfway, and it was damp because he couldn't bear to smoke it.
He handed one to Xiao Li, lit one for himself, and the two of them hid in a corner and smoked.
Looking at the letter in his hand, Wang Deming frowned more and more deeply, and finally looked at Xiao Li with a gaze full of sympathy.
When Xiao Li's wife discovered she was pregnant back in her hometown, she immediately realized it couldn't be Xiao Li's child; it must be the bastard offspring of those few scoundrels.
Faced with such extreme humiliation, the strong-willed woman from Sichuan committed suicide, along with her unborn child.
"Little Li..."
"Wow, Commander, you actually have something this good?!"
"I knew I always smelled smoke on you. Turns out you've been secretly hiding it all along, and you even said it was from the smoke."
"Give me two bites, quick!"
Wang Deming patted Xiao Li on the shoulder, just as he was about to say some useless words of comfort.
Suddenly, several figures rushed up and surrounded Wang Deming and Xiao Li, cursing and swearing, their laughter clearly audible.
They reached out and snatched the cigarette from Wang Deming's mouth, each taking a puff before it was gone in a moment, but no one tried to take Xiao Li's cigarette.
"You guys have noses that are sharper than dogs."
Wang Deming smiled helplessly. He had even found a corner to avoid people, but he didn't expect them to still find him.
"Does the commander have any more? One bite isn't enough for each person."
"If they don't have any, that's fine. The Japanese soldiers definitely have some. We'll kill a few more and rob more tomorrow."
"right!"
The soldiers surrounded Wang Deming, chattering amongst themselves.
"Here you go, this is the last one. Smoke it and go get some rest. Don't forget we're still at war."
Wang Deming took out his last cigarette, casually tossed the tin box aside, lit it, took a deep drag, and then it was snatched away.
"Commander, do you think we can get out of here alive?"
With so many people sharing one cigarette, it was gone in no time. Sitting down next to Wang Deming, he couldn't help but ask the question that had been on his mind the most.
"Yes, of course we can! Didn't you see how we drove the Japanese away with just a few of us? We definitely can!!"
Wang Deming stared at the excessively young faces in front of him, then paused for a moment, revealing a mouthful of yellow teeth.
