Chapter 31
Special High Special
"I'm going to the dance hall today to meet up with Cheng Jingchuan."
Lu Chen didn't wake up until evening. Today happened to be the rendezvous time that Cheng Jingchuan had mentioned. After getting dressed and catching the mouse on the table, Lu Chen went straight out the door.
Before leaving, I made a point of looking out the window at the Chinese-controlled area across the street. The Japanese camp had already moved away, and there was no more gunfire.
"They're probably doing some repairs."
The Japanese army suffered considerable losses in this attack and will definitely need to regroup. They might even need to call for reinforcements.
However, Lu Chen had already released the rats, so he could know immediately if there were any movements by the Japanese army.
"Ugh."
Lu Chen sighed and, as assigned by his superiors, investigated the reasons why Huang Dayong was selling arms and why the Japanese army was buying arms.
He felt there was no need to investigate further, since the Japanese army's equipment was clearly several levels superior, and Lu Chen really couldn't understand why they were buying weapons.
Stepping out the door, Lu Chen left the French Concession and entered the Chinese-controlled area. Now that the French soldiers saw him, they allowed him to come and go as he pleased.
The French army captain already knew Lu Chen; after all, Lu Chen was his benefactor, so naturally he wouldn't stop him.
Upon arriving in the Chinese territory, Lu Chen headed directly towards the central area, where there wasn't a single person to be seen on the streets.
The central area of the Chinese-controlled area was mostly inhabited by wealthy families or Japanese dogs; the war had not yet spread there.
Even so, there were very few people on the streets. Lu Chen saw a few familiar figures; they were the military police.
The military police are completely different now than before, because before they were basically a bunch of hooligans who were lazy and undisciplined.
Now they are like real soldiers, standing in neat formations, and even carrying guns as they patrol the streets.
Lu Chen recognized the gun at a glance; it was the gun he used in another district before he entered Shanghai, and it was several generations older than the guns used by the Japanese army.
Without a doubt, these guns were bought by the Japanese army from Huang Dayong, and now they're back in Huang Dayong's hands.
Lu Chen didn't go up to greet them, and kept walking towards the dance hall.
"Since there are traitors translating, there must also be puppet troops. Could the Japanese army be buying these weapons to supply their puppet troops?"
Lu Chen began to speculate, and he felt that his guess was most likely correct.
The Japanese army was reluctant to give their weapons to the puppet troops, so they bought weapons from Huang Dayong and gave them to the puppet troops.
Lu Chen didn't stop along the way and went straight into the dance hall. Even though it was wartime, the dance hall was still bustling with people, and the deafening jazz music made Lu Chen dizzy.
The dance hall was mostly filled with young people. Lu Chen immediately spotted Cheng Jingchuan sitting in the middle, with the same woman he had been with last time.
Lu Chen walked straight over and plopped down next to Cheng Jingchuan. Cheng Jingchuan glanced at him, then turned back to continue playing with the woman.
Seeing that he ignored him, Lu Chen picked up a wine glass on his own. He didn't drink alcohol, so he drank juice.
"The officer said he wants you to go to the Japanese concession and find him."
Cheng Jingchuan picked up his wine glass and took a sip, his voice drowned out by the music, but just loud enough for Lu Chen to hear.
Colonel Kuroda?
"understood."
After hearing Cheng Jingchuan's words, Lu Chen immediately stood up and left the dance hall.
Colonel Kuroda sent him to find him?
This time, Cheng Jingchuan didn't exchange any important intelligence with me during our meeting. Instead, he just said that Colonel Kuroda wanted to see me.
Lu Chen didn't know why he was looking for him, but he had to go to the Japanese concession now.
It was already within the Chinese-controlled area, and it only took about ten minutes to walk to the Japanese concession.
The Japanese soldiers guarding the gate tried to stop Lu Chen, but Lu Chen casually took out the medal that Colonel Kuroda had given him last time, and the Japanese soldiers dared not stop him when they saw it.
"Take me to Colonel Kuroda."
Lu Chen had no idea where Kuroda was in the Japanese concession, so he could only ask the Japanese soldier to take him there.
"Hi."
The Japanese soldier saluted Lu Chen, instructed another comrade to guard the entrance, and then led Lu Chen into the Japanese concession.
Now that war has broken out, the Japanese concession is no different from when the land sank last time; the streets are full of Japanese devils and patrolling soldiers.
After many twists and turns, the Japanese army finally led Lu Chen to a building where Japanese soldiers were also stationed.
"This man wants to see Colonel Kuroda; he has a pass."
The Japanese soldier exchanged words with the guards at the gate, who nodded. Then the Japanese soldier brought Lu Chen to them.
"Sir, even if you have a pass to enter the Special Police, you still need to be searched."
The two Japanese guards saluted Lu Chen and then began to search his body.
"Luckily, I didn't bring a gun."
Lu Chen thought to himself that he basically didn't carry a gun with him anymore, since he needed to make contact with the Japanese, and the Japanese liked to search people.
As for Rat One, whenever the Japanese touched one side, he would run to the other side, and whenever they touched the other side, he would run to the other side.
The mouse nimbly moved inside Lu Chen's clothes, and the Japanese soldiers couldn't detect it at all.
Finally, the Japanese soldiers saluted him and let Lu Chen go in.
"Is this TGOAT?"
Walking through this cluster of buildings, Lu Chen was somewhat surprised.
He knew about the Special Intelligence Agency, after all, it was an important intelligence agency of the Japanese army with a considerable reputation, and its presence could be seen both online and in TV dramas.
What Lu Chen didn't expect was that Colonel Kuroda would actually send him to the Special High Special Forces.
What does this mean?
Lu Chen couldn't figure it out, but he still prepared to make a backup plan.
"Rat One, if you notice anything amiss later, be sure to alert me immediately."
Rats are extremely sensitive to changes in their surroundings, so Lu Chen instructed the rats to be constantly vigilant so that he could escape immediately if anything seemed amiss.
"Squeak squeak".
The mouse agreed and told Lu Chen that he smelled a familiar scent.
"It must be Colonel Kuroda who has arrived."
Upon entering the Special Zone, Lu Chen had no idea where Kuroda wanted him to go, so he could only wait downstairs.
Sure enough, a short while later, Colonel Kuroda came up to him with a big smile and took him upstairs.
"Mr. Lu, I apologize for suddenly calling you here so late at night."
Colonel Kuroda smiled and shook hands with Lu Chen, then led Lu Chen into the Special High Command.
Lu Chen also smiled, showing his excitement at being personally received by Colonel Kuroda.
Upon entering the special venue, Lu Chen calmly looked around. There were many Japanese people coming and going, including several Chinese.
The atmosphere was oppressive. The people whispered to each other as they walked, so low that Lu Chen couldn't hear them at all. When they saw Colonel Kuroda, they all saluted with fear on their faces.
Colonel Kuroda wore a smile the whole way, responding with a smile to those who saluted him, and led Lu Chen all the way to the highest point of the Special High Command.
There are three doors here. The other two doors are tightly shut, and no light comes out. The last one is Colonel Kuroda's office.
"Mr. Lu, please come in."
