Chapter 10
Appearance Changes and the Backpack System
As soon as Ye Wei'an opened the car door halfway, Ai Lian, who had been waiting by the car, came to greet him.
"Young Master, you've been busy for so long, wouldn't you like to take a break? Let me get you some water..."
"No, there's no time to rest, Ellen." Ye Weian said, as he began packing a few changes of clothes and a small box containing important documents. "Knight Kane and I are taking a few men and riding to Firefall Town tonight."
"Firefall Town? Now?" Eileen was startled, then instinctively grabbed his sleeve. "Then, what about me? Young master, take me with you! I... I can help!"
"No, that won't do." Ye Wei'an refused without stopping his work or looking up. "There are no carriages along the way. We'll be traveling on horseback, and there might be dangers on the road. It's safer for you to stay with the group."
"Young Master—" Eileen drawled, tugging at his sleeve and shaking it gently, "Please take me with you, I promise I won't cause any trouble! I can help you pack, prepare the picnic, and... and I'm really scared to be left here alone."
"It's only been a day or two apart," Ye Wei'an stopped packing and looked at her helplessly, "Can't you even wait that long?"
"I can't wait!" Eileen shook her head decisively, puffed out her cheeks, and said angrily, "Besides, I promised Sister Lina that I would take good care of you, and I have to keep my word."
Lina—full name Alexandrina Sabassian—is a maid in the Xia Xing family, four years older than the original owner of this body.
According to the original owner's memories, she was a beautiful and kind girl who took good care of him when he was still in Firefall Fortress.
As an illegitimate son disliked by the first wife, the original owner's life in Firefall Castle was not easy. Most of the servants dared not show him any kindness, but only "Sister Lina" would often secretly come to see him, talk to him, and bring him exquisite snacks according to the standards of a noble young master. When Madam Xia Xing forbade him from entering the family library, "Sister Lina" would secretly bring him books to read at his request.
As Ye Wei'an's personal maid, Ellen's favorite person in Firefall Fortress is Lina.
Unfortunately, Lina was a maid in Xia Xing's family and couldn't go to Susar with Ye Wei'an. The two hadn't seen each other for four years.
Seeing that Elaine had brought up Lina, Ye Wei'an couldn't refute her, so he had to find another reason to make her back down.
"Can you ride a horse?"
"I can learn!" Ellen immediately said.
"Study? I'm leaving in a bit, I won't have time for you to study."
"I...I can ride a horse with the young master!" Eileen blurted out in her desperation.
To make her words more convincing, she even leaned closer and grabbed Ye Wei'an's arm without warning. "I'll hold on tight, I won't cause any trouble! Young Master, please, don't leave me here alone..."
Her soft, warm body pressed against me, carrying the fresh scent unique to young girls.
Ye Wei'an had underestimated the maid's intimacy with him. This sudden attack caused his body to stiffen almost imperceptibly.
He had never experienced anything like this in his past life: being hugged and acted coquettishly by such a beautiful girl.
What should I do? I have no experience in handling this!
Feeling helpless, he could only forcefully suppress his strange feelings, maintain a calm expression, and shake his head.
Now, Ellen hugged him even tighter. Her little face, tilted up, was filled with pleading in her always moist brown eyes, glistening as if she were about to burst into tears.
Not only does my body want to agree, but my mind also starts finding reasons for the other person to agree:
Leaving a pretty young girl alone with a bunch of soldiers is indeed very worrying.
Besides... according to my plan, bringing her along would have been more convincing to the mastermind.
Seeing that he might really lose his temper if the stalemate continued, Ye Wei'an finally relented and compromised, saying, "...Okay, okay, I'll take you with me. But you have to promise that you'll be obedient on the way, and you're not allowed to complain no matter how hard it is."
"Yes! I promise!" Ellen immediately perked up, her face brightening from gloomy to cheerful.
She turned around briskly and began to help Ye Wei'an pack the clothes he needed to take.
The two tidied up together inside the carriage. After a while, Eileen slowed down her movements, her gaze secretly falling on Ye Weian's profile.
This was a little habit she often did, but this time, as she looked at it, she found herself unable to look away.
"What's wrong, Eileen?" Ye Wei'an noticed the silence beside him and asked, somewhat puzzled, "Why are you staring at me like that? Is there something dirty on my face?"
"No...no!" Caught in the act of being a pervert, Eileen's face suddenly turned red.
"What happened?"
The girl hesitated for a long time before finally saying in a very soft voice, with a hint of uncertainty, "Young Master... don't you feel... that you seem a little different?"
Could it be that my personality changed too much after I transmigrated, and she noticed something was wrong?
Ye Wei'an's heart skipped a beat, but his expression remained calm: "How is it different?"
"I can't quite put my finger on it..." Eileen tilted her head, scrutinizing him intently. "Your eyes seem more expressive, your nose more defined... um, your features seem... well, you just look... better?"
Ye Wei'an steadied himself and deliberately spoke in a relaxed tone, "You must have misread it, right? I've always been like this."
"Really...?" Eileen blinked, glanced at Ye Weian a couple more times, and finally smiled sheepishly. "Maybe I was just too nervous and my eyes were playing tricks on me."
While she turned to get the water pouch, Ye Wei'an quickly pulled out a small silver mirror from his luggage and carefully examined his reflection in the light coming through the car window.
At first glance, the face in the mirror seems to be the same one I've known in both past and present lives, but there are definitely some differences—
The contours of her face seem more pleasing to the eye, the lines of her brow bone are clearer, the curve of her nose is straighter, the proportions of her facial features are more harmonious, and her eye sockets are more open. Her originally rather ordinary single eyelids have somehow become relaxed double eyelids.
The most obvious feature is his eyes, with a faint, bluish-white light shining deep within his pupils. When he looks at people, he has an indescribable focus and penetrating power.
These changes, taken individually, may not seem significant, but when combined, they dramatically improve the overall appearance of the face, transforming it from a delicate and pleasing look to a truly handsome and dashing appearance.
"It seems... this is the direct change brought about by the increase in charm attribute." Ye Wei'an put away the mirror, understanding dawning on his mind.
It seems I'll have to be a little more careful in the future.
Such subtle changes might be attributed to a "change in temperament" or "growing up" in the eyes of those familiar with the original owner, such as Ellen. However, if the changes were more obvious, they might arouse unnecessary suspicion.
Fortunately, for the past two weeks, the original owner had been staying in the carriage and hadn't seen the guards around him much.
It's been four years since I last saw my family.
There shouldn't be any problems in the short term.
Ye Wei'an put down the mirror and continued tidying up.
As a descendant of a nobleman, even if he was just the illegitimate son of a baron, he still possessed considerable personal wealth.
On the other side, Ellen felt that everything was useful—portable pots, tin water cups, and even an unopened packet of expensive spices—she wanted to stuff them all into her bag. She even argued, "These were secretly sent to me by Sister Lina. Young Master can use them when he eats dry rations!"
As a result, the only leather bag was quickly stuffed full, and there were many other things piled up next to it with nowhere to put them.
"I should have bought more travel bags."
To his surprise, just as the thought crossed his mind, several semi-transparent grid-like phantoms appeared faintly at the edge of his vision—exactly the same as the inventory system in the game.
With a slight thought, he tried to "think" about putting the heavy magic books in his hands into one of the slots.
The next second, the book disappeared from my hand, and a corresponding book icon appeared in the square.
"It really is... a backpack system?" He immediately understood what was going on.
As he focused his mind, a status indicator appeared in the corner of his vision: [Weight: 3.2/140].
"Just like in the game." He realized that the higher his strength attribute, the higher his carrying capacity. As long as the total carrying capacity did not exceed the limit, the items could be stored in this attached alternate dimension.
So he decisively put the magic book he originally intended to keep, as well as a crystal ball, inside.
Then, he turned to the girl who was folding clothes: "Eileen, hand me the clothes you've packed, I'll take them with me."
Eileen came over carrying a stack of neat shirts and trousers, looking curiously at his empty hands: "Young Master, where...are you planning to put these?"
"Oh, this..." Ye Wei'an made up an excuse without changing his expression, "I just remembered, a friend gave me a dimensional bag when I left the academy, it can hold quite a lot of things."
"Dimensional bag?!" Ellen covered her mouth with both hands. "I heard Lina say that it's an extremely expensive magical item! Even the most ordinary one costs thousands of gold coins, and the entire Xia Xing family only has one... Your friend is really generous."
Ye Wei'an was just a baron's illegitimate son. As his personal maid, Eileen probably hadn't seen more than three hundred gold coins in her entire life.
"I did him a big favor, this is just me returning the favor," Ye Wei'an said vaguely.
Eileen nodded, seemingly understanding but not quite.
The young maid knew nothing about magic or the interactions between magicians, and she trusted her master unconditionally, believing everything Ye Wei'an said.
