Chapter 19

Riley, didn't I tell you to keep an eye on Jade?

As for why this shield ended up in Riley's hands...

Actually, this was already happening when Jade left the antique shop and tried to track down Riley.

Knowing the plot, Riley used his climbing ability to enter the second floor of the antique shop through the window at the back.

Then, taking advantage of her father's distraction while searching for Xiaoyu, she quietly entered her father's room and stored the shield in the system's built-in storage space.

To ensure that if the Black Hand Gang attacked, Uncle Jackie would still have enough leverage to safely save his father's life.

Of course, an easier way would be to bring the old man to District 13 as well, just like you did with Peter.

However, as a stranger, Riley's actions would certainly be met with incomprehension and resistance from his father, leading to unnecessary misunderstandings.

Secondly...

If it weren't for this scene, which made Uncle Jackie realize the seriousness of the problem and thus agree to Sheriff Black's request to embark on the journey to find the talisman...

Even if Riley takes the Chicken Talisman beforehand, the remaining eleven talismans will still fall into Shendu's hands.

After all, having lived in the Marvel Universe for fifteen years and having forgotten much of his past life experiences, Riley only remembered the general locations of the talismans, but not their exact locations.

Furthermore, it was clearly unrealistic for Riley, who was still a minor at the time, to get Ben and May's permission to buy a plane ticket and embark on a long-distance international trip to collect charms and such on his own.

Even with Old Man Riley and his group, including District 13, having moved from San Francisco to New York City, the locations of those talismans might have changed. Riley alone might not be able to collect them all.

Not to mention, after the Charms arc, the Eight Demons arc will follow immediately. Especially the most overpowered one, the Book of Time that can arbitrarily alter reality—what if it also exists in this Marvel universe…?

To ensure the world remains normal and doesn't fall under the control of evil demons, Riley dared not interfere too much with Uncle Long's choices.

So, after installing a tracker on his father to ensure he could rescue him in time should things escalate beyond the scope of the original story, Riley turned back the way he came. He landed perfectly on the wall, giving Jade, who had come to track him, a huge surprise.

"Yes! That's it! You guys have really helped me a lot!"

Although subconsciously, something felt off, Uncle Long was too anxious to dwell on the details in order to rescue his father.

After taking the shield from Riley, he gave her a few casual words of advice and hurriedly left the antique shop.

"Alright, Xiaoyu, go back to your room right now. Riley, could you please look after Xiaoyu for me? I'll be right back!"

Before long, based on the previous phone conversation, Uncle Long arrived at the meeting place.

Looking at the building, which, despite being near noon in broad daylight, inexplicably exuded an eerie and sinister aura, as if some ominous force lurked within, Uncle Long's heart sank to the bottom.

Because of Riley's influence, Uncle Jackie didn't fight the Mafia trio; instead, he was taken directly to Section 13 by Sheriff Black. Furthermore, the trio harbored resentment towards Riley and, when returning to report, embellished his account of Riley's threat. Therefore, the scene of Tru kidnapping Uncle Jackie was brought forward considerably.

According to Sheriff Black, the Mafia, a notorious criminal organization, was so powerful that even the well-staffed District 13 struggled to apprehend them.

I'm just a lowly archaeologist. Can I really save my father from these vicious people...?

"Dad's up there, right? When are we going to rush up and rescue him?"

"...Excuse me for asking, but do you actually speak English?"

"What kind of question is that? Of course I know the answer!"

"Since that's the case, I told you to go back to your room and not to wander around... I've told you so many times, why don't you ever listen?"

In the midst of this tragic atmosphere of a hero going forth never to return, Uncle Long took a deep breath and was about to take a step forward when a voice suddenly rang out behind him, interrupting his emotional flow once again.

Then, amidst these unexpected situations, Uncle Long, who had gradually become accustomed to Xiaoyu's elusive nature and whose expression had become numb and indifferent, turned around expressionlessly and asked in a clear and articulate voice.

When Xiaoyu felt guilty and silently lowered her head, she remained silent.

Still feeling unsatisfied, Uncle Long turned his head a few steps and complained to Riley in a bad mood.

"And you, Riley, didn't I ask you to help look after Jade?"

"That's right, Uncle Long, that's why I'm staying by Xiaoyu's side and keeping a close eye on her for you~"

Faced with Uncle Long's overwhelming resentment, Riley suppressed a laugh while blinking innocently. He then shrugged and responded with self-righteousness.

"Look, I even called for help to complete this difficult task! They'll be here soon!"

"Hiss... That's not what I meant. I meant to make you...! Never mind, there's no time to argue about that now."

By this point, Uncle Long had finally realized that neither Riley nor Jade were someone who could give him an easy time.

Upon hearing that Riley had even called in reinforcements, fearing that the Mafia might misunderstand and threaten his father's safety, Uncle Long couldn't afford to be patient and slowly teach these two unruly kids a lesson.

He could only put on a stern face and speak in a much harsher tone, threatening Xiaoyu.

"Xiaoyu, this is your last warning: stay right here! Otherwise, I'll pack you up and send you back to Hong Kong! Riley, you're not allowed to take Xiaoyu anywhere else!"

"We swear by the honor of the Boy Scouts that we will complete this mission!"

After receiving unanimous promises from the two men, Uncle Long felt a little relieved and quickly ran into the building.

They didn't even realize they had just entered the building. The two, who looked serious, exchanged a smile, gave each other a high five, and then spoke the rest of their sentences in perfect unison.

"Hehe, we're not Boy Scouts anyway~"

It was at this moment that a speeding taxi came to a steady stop behind the two of them.

When the two heard the noise and turned around, they saw Peter Parker get out of the taxi after paying the fare and walk quickly toward them.

Thanks to the brothers' tacit understanding, and led by Riley, the three of them walked to the corner of the building, avoiding the surveillance cameras and the gaze of passersby.

Peter then crossed his arms, rolled his eyes at Riley, and complained irritably.

"First you asked me to call in sick, then you made me take a taxi all this way during my lunch break... Riley, you owe me an explanation, or I'm going to tell Uncle Ben and Aunt May!"

"Oh dear, so reluctant? I was thinking of giving you this suit so you could participate in the upcoming operation to combat international crime, which would be our debut as superheroes..."

Watching Peter puff out his cheeks and sulk, looking just like a sulking little hamster, Riley had to put in a lot of effort to make sure he didn't burst out laughing.

Just before Peter, realizing Riley's thoughts and becoming increasingly embarrassed and angry, could retaliate further, she raised her hand and lightly patted her chest, demonstrating to Peter the cool process of putting on the nanosuit.

Then he handed the other spider tag, which was lying quietly in his palm, to the dumbfounded Peter and continued, feigning regret.

"Unfortunately, you seem quite unwilling, so I can't force you. Let's leave this to the professionals and go back to school first."
