Chapter 76
All Have Secrets
"Chase after them!" Qin Jin made the decision immediately without hesitation.
"Jack, come with me. Catherine, see if this girl can be saved! Alessa—don't do what just happened again!"
"Yes!" Catherine replied, and Constantine immediately opened the door and chased after her. Only Alessa nodded and gave a somewhat timid "hmm."
Qin Jin was truly furious this time, and she knew exactly why!
After saying that, Qin Jin didn't even have time to glance at the strange bald girl on the ground before rushing towards the open side door, disappearing into the dark forest outside, and chasing after Constanze.
In the living room, under the glaring lights, only Catherine and Alessa remained, along with the silent, terrifying-looking girl on the floor.
A deathly silence descended once more. Catherine's heart was still pounding, and the adrenaline-fueled tremor made her fingers quiver slightly.
The girl was curled up like a baby bird that had been skinned, her bald scalp covered with a shocking array of bloody holes, and her chest barely rose and fell.
Catherine hesitated, the scene from just now still fresh in her mind, and she didn't know what to do...
Aresa watched Qin Jin's figure disappear silently before turning back, her grey-blue eyes revealing Catherine's inner turmoil:
"Those things that were on her are gone."
Upon hearing this, Catherine's tense nerves relaxed slightly.
She took a deep breath, suppressing the surging nausea and fear. Her instincts as a police officer began to take over, and she knelt down beside the girl, carefully checking her vital signs.
The pulse in her carotid artery was so weak it was almost imperceptible, and her breathing was so shallow and rapid it was almost stopped. There was obvious swelling under the skin in her chest and abdomen. When certain areas were pressed, the girl let out a faint groan while unconscious.
"Subcutaneous bleeding, or organ damage!"
Catherine rushed out of the holiday home, grabbed the first-aid kit from the Chevrolet Blazer, rushed back to the living room, tore open the adrenaline injection pen, and without hesitation stabbed it into the girl's outer thigh muscle, forcefully pushing in the liquid.
A few minutes later, perhaps due to the adrenaline, or perhaps as a final burst of energy, the girl's almost non-existent breathing seemed to become slightly more noticeable, and her pulse quickened—
Although it was still as faint as a candle flickering in the wind, at least it was no longer the deathly silence.
Catherine took out her phone to dial for help, but as she did so, she suddenly looked at Alessa:
"Should I...get hit?"
"Wait for Qin's notification!"
Aresa shook her head, her tone flat and devoid of any explanation, offering only these few simple words.
"But……"
Catherine wanted to argue, but remembering the horrific scenes she had just witnessed, she swallowed her words.
In this place, faced with such an illogical existence, Qin Jin and Alessa's opinions were indeed worthy of respect. She could only suppress her anxiety, place a cushion under the girl, and stay with Alessa to keep watch.
A heavy silence filled the space once more. Catherine's gaze involuntarily drifted toward Alessa, who sat quietly beside her, neither speaking nor moving, simply watching silently.
However, she no longer exudes the chilling desolation and gloom of the dark; she is now filled with more human elements.
An irrepressible question was finally voiced by Catherine:
"Alessa..." Her voice was a little hoarse.
"Just now in the dark, when I called you... why didn't you answer me? And... when I bent down and kicked something and looked up again, you... you seemed to disappear for a moment? What... what happened?"
She asked the question, and her heart began to race again at the direct probing.
Alessa slowly turned her head, her grey-blue eyes staring directly at Catherine. A few seconds of silence followed, the air seeming to freeze.
Then, Alessa spoke calmly:
"Everyone has secrets. Qin and I have them, Jack has them, and even you have them!"
She paused, her gaze sweeping over the girl on the ground before returning to Catherine's face:
"You need to understand, as long as Qin accepts you, we're all in this together! Don't worry about us!"
Catherine was speechless, as if an invisible bucket of ice water had been poured over her head.
Aresa's words were like a cold key, unlocking the door in her heart that she had deliberately ignored.
Yes...it's a secret.
Qin Jin's superhuman strength and speed, and the occasional glimpse of world-weariness in his eyes...
Constantine's words naturally revealed his past and familiarity with the devil...
His own past, which he was reluctant to discuss, and the reasons for working in the Western Division...
A complex emotion welled up in Catherine's heart—
It was a sense of relief, a lingering fear, and a touch of enlightenment.
What is the point of her obsession with uncovering Alessa's secrets in this eerie place fraught with danger and monsters?
As Alessa said, they are a team, or at least, they are one of their own.
Qin Jin stood in front of her without hesitation in the slums, and Alessa had just caught that terrifying monster. They were reliable shields and blades when fighting against truly evil beings.
"You're right, Alessa." Catherine's voice regained its calmness, tinged with a weary hoarseness. "We're on the same side!"
She didn't ask any more questions, but silently stayed by the unconscious girl's side, her fingers on the girl's weak pulse, her eyes warily scanning the darkness outside the doors and windows.
Only the girl's faint, labored breathing and an unspoken silence remained in the living room.
