Chapter 11
: Remain Calm and Composed, Then Complain
However, Yu Fuli didn't take Wen Qiaoan's words seriously.
He was still unenlightened, when he was just a wild fox.
They often fight with various animals for food, and many have been seriously injured, but they still recover gradually.
The air was filled with the cold smell of disinfectant.
Yu Fuli looked at the other person's hands, which were steady and focused as they prepared the medical equipment. Those hands were fair and slender, belonging to a student, yet at this moment they displayed a professionalism and calmness beyond their years that was astonishing.
"It seems that Wen has a lot of experience in orthopedic trauma," Yu Fuli said casually.
Wen Qiaoan picked up the splint, turned around, and the usual gentle smile on her lips remained.
"I have a doctor in my family, so I just picked it up from there." He brushed it off casually, then walked to Yu Fuli's side. "It will hurt a little, just bear with it."
His movements were indeed precise and swift, and the process of immobilizing the injury was clean and efficient, keeping the pain to a minimum.
But every touch, every adjustment, carries with it a sense of absolute control.
Yu Fuli could feel the warmth emanating from the other person's fingertips through the gauze, as well as the almost icy arrogance hidden beneath the gentle exterior.
The last strand of the bandage was securely fastened.
Wen Qiaoan took a half step back, examined her work, and seemed fairly satisfied.
"It's temporarily stabilized, but we need to schedule surgery for repositioning and internal fixation as soon as possible. I suggest you go to the municipal hospital now; I can help you contact them..."
"Is it that serious?!"
Before Wen Qiaoan could finish speaking, she was interrupted by a suddenly raised voice.
It was Lin Xun, who had been silently following behind.
From the moment he stepped into the infirmary, he tried his best to shrink into the shadows and minimize his presence, like a lifeless sculpture.
Yu Fuli could understand. Having just experienced something like that, her emotions were shattered, and she needed time and silence to piece herself back to normal.
It seems he has now finished piecing it together.
Lin Xun stepped into the light, his complexion no better than that of the injured Yu Fuli. His lips were tightly pressed together, but his eyes were filled with belated fear and anxiety.
His gaze was fixed on the glaring white splint on Yu Fuli's arm.
"If it weren't for me... the teacher wouldn't have gotten hurt. It's all my fault, I'm so useless!"
Lin Xun's shoulders trembled slightly, overwhelmed by self-reproach and lingering fear, which threatened to crush his frail back.
If it weren't to protect him, why would the teacher...
A cool hand suddenly landed gently on his hair and ruffled it.
The owner of that hand had cold fingertips due to injury, yet his movements were exceptionally gentle.
"It's alright, I'm fine." Yu Fuli's voice was soft, weak from her injury, yet it strangely calmed Lin Xun's uneasy heart. "Don't look like that. You helped the teacher a lot today too."
Lin Xun suddenly raised her reddened eyes, her lips moved, and confusion and lingering fear intertwined in her eyes.
What help did he provide? He was clearly just a burden, a useless person who needed protection but instead dragged the teacher into danger.
Yu Fuli didn't explain, but simply shook her head, a reassuring smile appearing on her pale face.
The smile was faint, yet it spoke of the truth about the chaos that had just occurred, a truth that only the two of them now knew.
It seems the two of them have a little secret.
Wen Qiaoan watched as Lin Xun easily diverted Yu Fuli's attention from him, but there was no displeasure on her face. She simply turned her head slightly to look at the suddenly excited boy. Her gaze seemed as gentle as before, but upon closer inspection, one could see a hint of coldness.
"Teacher Yu," Wen Qiaoan's voice rang out from behind, gentle as ever, but it drew Yu Fuli's attention back. "Don't forget, you need to get to the hospital as soon as possible."
Yu Fuli paused slightly as she walked out, without turning back. She simply raised her uninjured hand and waved it gently in the air: "Thanks, Wen."
The doors opened and closed, and the corridor returned to silence.
The footsteps faded into the distance, eventually disappearing into the distance.
Wen Qiaoan stood still, her gaze fixed on the hand that had just helped Yu Fuli.
He looked at it for a few seconds, then turned and walked to the treatment table, picked up the large-capacity bottle of disinfectant, and unscrewed it.
Clear, pungent liquid poured down, soaking the back of my hands, between my fingers, and on my wrists.
Again and again.
The water was icy cold and swift, washing over my skin.
The pungent, almost suffocating smell quickly spread, soaking his cuffs and clinging to his collar.
He was completely enveloped in this strong smell.
He didn't stop until the bottle was empty.
After removing the disposable gloves, the knuckles were slightly red from repeated rubbing and the cold.
He picked up the notebook, turned and walked towards the stairwell, his steps steady, with only the lingering smell of disinfectant around him.
Upstairs, Jiang Yu's VIP ward area was so quiet it was almost empty.
Wen Qiaoan stopped in front of the door, raised her hand, and knocked.
As soon as the door was pushed open, an even stronger smell of medicine rushed in.
"Holy crap! What's that smell?!" Jiang Yu, who was leaning against the headboard fiddling with something, suddenly frowned, covered her mouth and nose in disgust, and looked up at him. "Wen Qiaoan, did you fall into the disinfection pool? It smells awful!"
Wen Qiaoan stepped into the room, closing the door behind her, used to her friend's exaggerated reaction. "The smell of disinfectant."
He spoke calmly, walked to the window, and placed the notebook on the table. "I just treated a patient with a fracture."
He paused, turned his head to the side, and the scattered lights from the window fell on his expressionless profile.
"Oh, right," he said, as if suddenly remembering something, his voice devoid of any emotion, "you know that patient too."
Jiang Yu stopped what she was doing and raised an eyebrow at him.
Wen Qiaoan met his gaze and uttered the name clearly and slowly:
"It's Yu Fuli."
Jiang Yu's expression of disgust froze instantly. He slowly lowered his hand from his mouth and nose. "Who?"
He asked, his voice very calm, as if the exclamation he had just made was just an illusion.
"Yu Fuli," Wen Qiaoan repeated, walked to the sink by the window, squeezed out another pump of hand soap, and carefully rubbed her fingers together. The sound of running water was exceptionally clear in the overly quiet ward.
"Double fracture of the radius and ulna in the left hand, accompanied by nerve and blood vessel compression injury. I just performed temporary fixation."
Jiang Yu didn't speak, his gaze fixed on Wen Qiaoan's hands, which were being washed by the water.
Those hands had distinct knuckles and gleamed with an almost sickly clean sheen under the cold light.
"How did this happen?" After a long silence, Jiang Yu finally spoke, his voice a little dry.
"He said it was from a collision." Wen Qiaoan turned off the tap, took out a tissue, and slowly wiped her fingers one by one. "But the damage pattern on the X-ray is more consistent with repeated blows from a blunt object."
He looked up at Jiang Yu through the bright light of the ward. "Lin Xun helped him here. The kid was terrified."
"Lin Xun..." Jiang Yu chewed on the name. He didn't know this person, but he would in the future.
He paused, then looked at Wen Qiaoan meaningfully, "And you? You just helped him fix it?"
"I'm a student assistant at the infirmary." Wen Qiaoan knew what he meant, but he didn't answer the question.
He closed the notebook, his tone flat and emotionless, "Treating emergency patients is my duty. As for the patients' personal grudges..."
He looked up, his gaze behind his glasses as cold as ever. "It's not within my scope of responsibility."
Jiang Yu looked at him like that, as if trying to glean something from his indifferent expression.
A brief silence fell over the ward.
"You smell really bad," Jiang Yu suddenly complained, turning her head to the side, her jawline taut. "What did you get on you? You've washed so many times."
Wen Qiaoan lowered her eyes and straightened her cuffs, which were not disheveled.
"It's just a little blood on it," he said casually. "I don't really like the smell."
Jiang Yu stared at him for a few seconds, then suddenly twitched the corner of her mouth, as if she understood something, but didn't say anything.
"Alright, Dr. Wen, you're very conscientious." He leaned back against the pillows, his gaze fixed on the deep night outside the window. "So, where is he right now? Have you fulfilled your duty?"
"I suggested they go to the municipal hospital for surgery immediately, and Lin Xun accompanied him."
Wen Qiaoan also looked out the window. The glass reflected his expressionless face and the pale light of the ward behind him. "At this time, he should still be on the road."
"On the way..."
Jiang Yu repeated in a low voice.
After a moment, he seemed to suddenly get bored, waved his hand, and said, "Okay. Get rid of that smell, it's giving me a headache."
Wen Qiaoan nodded slightly, then turned and walked towards the door.
As I gripped the doorknob, Jiang Yu's lukewarm voice came from behind me, sounding both casual and a confirmation:
"By the way, which hand did he injure?"
Wen Qiaoan did not stop.
"Left hand."
The door closed gently, shutting out the strong smell of disinfectant, along with the unfinished conversation inside the ward.
The corridor was long and dimly lit.
Wen Qiaoan did not leave immediately. He stood outside the door for a moment, raised his right hand, held it up to the light, and slowly made a fist, as if testing the strength of a grip, or as if simply feeling the invisible substance that remained on his fingertips that could not be washed away no matter what.
Then, he lowered his hand and walked steadily into the shadows of the stairwell in the opposite direction from the elevator.
