Chapter 68
- I don't know what title to give it.
"Director Chen, good evening, this is Yu Fuli. I apologize for bothering you so late, but I have an urgent report on a serious case of student bullying involving property damage and threats to personal safety... Yes, the evidence is conclusive, there are publicly available pictures on the forum... The victim is Lin Xun from my class... Okay, I will bring the student to your office in twenty minutes."
After hanging up the phone, Yu Fuli looked at Lin Xun, who was staring blankly at him.
"Pack your things and come with me to the administration building." His voice returned to its usual calm, lecturing tone. "Tell Director Chen everything you know. Leave the rest to me."
The corridor of the administration building was exceptionally quiet at night, with only the sound of two people's footsteps.
The cold white light cast a solemn glow on the portraits of past principals hanging on the wall.
Lin Xun followed half a step behind Yu Fuli, her fingers curled up inside her school uniform sleeve, her steps hesitant.
The closer he got to the dark wooden door marked "Student Discipline Office," the shallower and more rapid his breathing became.
Yu Fuli could sense the tension in the boy behind her.
He stopped in front of the door, but instead of knocking immediately, he turned around and faced Lin Xun.
"Afraid?" he asked softly, his voice unusually clear in the empty corridor.
Lin Xun nodded, then quickly shook her head, her lips pursed until they turned white.
Yu Fuli looked at him, her tone softening: "Remember, you did nothing wrong. The fault lies with the perpetrators and the environment that condones violence, but the victim should never feel ashamed or afraid. Now, we are here to correct mistakes, not to be judged."
He reached out and gently pressed Lin Xun's tense shoulder.
"When you go in, answer Director Chen's questions truthfully. Tell me what you saw and heard. No need to exaggerate or hide anything. Leave the rest to me."
Lin Xun raised his eyes and met Yu Fuli's calm and profound gaze.
There was no pity in that gaze, only a calm, reassuring strength.
He took a deep breath and nodded again, this time with more force.
"it is good."
Yu Fuli then raised his hand and knocked on the door.
"Come in." A deep, slightly hoarse male voice came from inside.
Stepping inside, the office was simpler than I had imagined.
Behind a large solid wood desk sat a man in his fifties, with his hair neatly combed and wearing thin-rimmed glasses.
He was wearing the standard dark gray suit for the college administration, with the top button of his shirt fastened; he was none other than Chen Wentao, the director in charge of student discipline.
Several documents were spread out in front of him, and a cup of steaming strong tea was beside him.
Upon seeing Yu Fuli and Lin Xun, his sharp gaze swept over them from behind his glasses, and he nodded slightly.
"Ms. Yu, please have a seat." Director Chen's voice was flat as he gestured to the two chairs in front of his desk, his gaze then falling on Lin Xun, who was bowing her head. "Is this Lin Xun?"
"Yes, Director Chen." Yu Fuli led Lin Xun to sit down and briefly recounted the events, including the pictures on the forum, the items Lin Xun had stolen and destroyed, and the insulting remarks made by the other party.
His statement was objective and calm, without any personal emotion, yet he clearly pointed out every key detail.
Director Chen listened quietly, but his gaze remained fixed on Lin Xun most of the time.
After Yu Fuli finished speaking, he spoke, his voice still steady: "Lin Xun, is what Teacher Yu said true? Are there any details that need to be added?"
Lin Xun clenched his hands on his knees. He raised his head, trying to keep his voice from trembling: "It's all true. There were probably four of them, I didn't know them all. One had a tuft of blue hair and a row of silver earrings in his left ear. Another was very tall and strong, with a deep voice. They stole my backpack, emptied its contents, stomped on it... and said... said I was trash from the downtown area, unworthy of..."
His voice choked as he spoke, and he lowered his head.
Director Chen's face remained expressionless; he simply picked up a pen and quickly jotted down a few notes in the notebook in front of him.
"Could you please provide the time, location, physical characteristics, and a link to the forum post, Professor Yu?"
Yu Fuli was already prepared; she used her phone to bring up the post interface and handed it over.
Director Chen examined the picture carefully, especially the trampled fox doll in the corner and the pale hand, and his brows furrowed slightly.
He put down his phone and looked at Yu Fuli: "Professor Yu, this matter is very serious. The academy has always had a zero-tolerance attitude towards matters involving property damage and personal insults."
"I believe in the academy's fairness, Director Chen," Yu Fuli replied calmly.
"Yeah, right," he silently added to himself.
If there were truly zero tolerance, Lin Xun wouldn't have suffered such prolonged bullying.
The college does not have a hierarchical system.
Moreover, there are quite a few students like Lin Xun who have been bullied.
"However," Director Chen changed the subject, his gaze becoming somewhat serious, "Professor Yu should also be aware that the student body at Saint Laurent Academy is... rather complex. To accurately identify and handle the students involved based solely on physical characteristics and this anonymous post requires solid evidence and a rigorous procedure. Especially if it involves upperclassmen or students with special backgrounds, the handling will require even greater caution."
He phrased it tactfully, but the meaning was clear—he was afraid that if the matter involved students with connections, it would encounter resistance in handling it.
Yu Fuli understood. He leaned forward slightly, his tone carrying disapproval: "Director Chen, I understand and respect the procedures. But precisely because the student body is diverse, the disciplinary department needs to demonstrate its authority and impartiality even more. Otherwise, if they can bully Lin Xun today because she comes from the Lower City, they might inflict violence on anyone for other reasons tomorrow. The public provocation on the anonymous forum is itself a contempt for the college's regulations. If even such clear-cut and egregious public bullying cannot be dealt with promptly and seriously, then the order that the college has painstakingly maintained and its principle of education for all will likely be questioned."
Since the Royal Academy of Saint Laurent opened its doors to commoners and scholarship recipients, the academy administration has indeed issued a series of explicit regulations aimed at maintaining campus order and student safety.
Director Chen Wentao and the discipline department he heads are one of the concrete manifestations of this set of rules and regulations.
However, this is ultimately an aristocratic academy with a clear class distinction.
Rules and regulations can be displayed on the wall, and written commitments can be written into the charter, but class consciousness and intangible privileges rooted in blood ties and social circles cannot be easily erased by a few official documents.
