Chapter 24
Romantic Hotel
On the sixth day, the moment the survivors stepped into the hotel's public area, they felt a chilling change—the space seemed to have come alive and was filled with naked malice towards them.
The oil paintings on the walls, with their vibrant colors, depict figures whose eyes are no longer merely a sensory gaze, but truly move with the movement of living people, their gazes cold and greedy, as if assessing the next meal.
The dark red carpet beneath my feet had intricate patterns that seemed to writhe and change slowly like living things, sometimes twisting into painful ghost faces, sometimes weaving eerie symbols that foreshadowed death.
Even the background music playing on a loop on the radio began to be mixed with intermittent, distorted whispers, as if accusing someone or tempting them.
"It...it's watching us..." one candidate said, pointing to a portrait of a nobleman on the wall, his voice trembling. The eyes of the person in the painting were staring intently at him.
"This carpet! The pattern wasn't like this before!" Another person jumped back in alarm, looking at the area of the carpet that had just changed into a skull pattern.
What's even more disheartening is that the rules they had finally managed to become familiar with were starting to become unstable, and even "dynamically changing."
Rule 1: Hotel staff must always maintain a smile, demonstrating professionalism and enthusiasm.
As a candidate walked down the main staircase on the second floor, blood-red text suddenly appeared on the wall, and rule number one had been changed to...
In this area, grief must be endured, and sincere tears must be shed.
The man stood frozen in place, trying to force a smile, but found his facial muscles stiff and unable to make any expression. Fear made him want to cry even more, but he was also afraid of breaking the original rules... Under extreme contradiction and mental pressure, his body began to convulse violently, and he was eventually swept away by the tentacle-like shadow hanging from the ceiling.
Rule 3: Room service is only available from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following day. Outside of service hours, please do not disturb any guests, regardless of what you hear.
The boundaries of service hours are becoming blurred.
Sometimes at 4 PM, the announcement would suddenly broadcast that a "temporary service period" had begun, requiring immediate response to the needs of certain guest rooms; other times, late at night, an order for "emergency cleaning" would sound. The candidates were constantly on the go, on high alert, afraid of missing or misjudging the "service hours."
"It's toying with us!" Shadow gritted his teeth, slicing through a viscous, paint-based tentacle that tried to emerge from the wall. "The core rules of this hellhole are adjusting to our reactions! It's trying every trick in the book to drive us mad and then devour us!"
Bai Xu observed his surroundings with a serious expression, rapidly analyzing various abnormal phenomena.
"Shadow is right. The hotel isn't a fixed program; it's a dynamic, malevolent entity. It learns our fears, exploits our habits, and then sets even more deadly traps. We must adapt to change faster than it does and find the 'gaps' in its logic."
Survival became a dynamic game. The White Order Squad had to abandon its reliance on fixed rules and instead rely on White Order's reasoning, real-time communication among team members, and extreme sensitivity to environmental details to make judgments. Every step was like dancing on a knife's edge.
As night fell, everyone fled back to their dormitories like frightened birds, locking their doors tightly. Everyone knew that the sixth night would be even more unbearable.
As the clock struck midnight, the Romantic Concerto began precisely on time.
This time, however, the music was no longer melodious and tender, but became extremely harsh and distorted, filled with discordant notes, as if countless metal pieces were scraping against glass, or as if the wails of the dying had been forcibly composed into music.
This sound attacks the soul directly, causing those who hear it to have splitting headaches, feel nauseous, and experience a rapid drop in their sanity.
"Ugh... What the hell is that sound..." Shadow covered his ears, his face turning pale.
Almost at the same time the music started, a bang several times louder than before came from outside the door!
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
The flimsy wooden door of the dormitory groaned under its own weight, as if it might be smashed to pieces at any moment.
Not only that, the windows began to suffer heavy blows, and spiderweb-like cracks appeared in the glass. Even more terrifying, a sickening scratching sound came from the vent, as if something was trying to squeeze into that confined space!
"They're coming in!" Red Kite gripped her weapon tightly, her eyes fixed on the violently shaking door.
"Hold the door shut! Block the vents!" Bai Xu shouted, and he himself used his body to brace against the door.
Shadow quickly piled the tables and chairs in the room behind the door, while Red Kite tore off a bed sheet and tried to stuff it into the gap in the vent. But the force of the impact outside the door was far beyond what they had imagined, and the furniture blocking the door was shaken and kept shifting. The scratching sound from the vent grew louder and louder, and even tiny, slimy black fingertips poked out from the gap.
"Damn it! We can't stop them!" Shadow cursed, looking at the tables and chairs that were about to fall apart.
Hong Yuan's eyes sharpened as she looked at Bai Xu: "Boss, Rule Nine only says you can't open doors or windows, but it didn't say you can't fight back against anything that tries to intrude, right?"
Bai Xu instantly understood her intention and quickly assessed: "Logically feasible! The rules protect the act of 'not opening the door' itself. Against a threat of unauthorized intrusion, retaliating might not violate the core prohibitions! Move!"
With permission granted, Red Kite and Shadow no longer hesitated.
Red Kite's abilities lean towards agility and precision. She concentrated her power into a single point and, through the gap in the door, precisely stabbed at the most ferocious entity outside, eliciting a strange, pained roar.
The Shadow was even more violent. He directly slashed down with a dagger wrapped in special energy at the fingertips that were protruding into the vent!
"Hiss!" Black slime splattered out, and the scratching sound outside the vent turned into an angry roar, temporarily halting the intrusion.
Their counterattack seemed to have an effect, as the frequency and force of the impacts outside the door decreased. They used this brief respite to desperately reinforce their defenses.
However, not everyone is so "lucky".
In the adjacent dormitory, a contestant who had already suffered a mental breakdown and had been cowering under his bed was completely driven to the brink of madness by the terrifying concerto, the violent impact, and the screams of his companions. He uncontrollably let out a continuous, hysterical scream.
"Aaaaaah—! Let me go! Let me go!!"
The scream seemed to be some kind of signal.
Strands of viscous, petroleum-like black substance, ignoring the tightly closed doors and windows, slowly seeped in from under the door and along the edges of the window frames. As if alive, they wriggled and gathered, flowing towards the source of the screams under the bed.
"Stop yelling! Shut up!" his roommate shouted in terror, trying to stop him.
But it was too late.
The black substance quickly spread under the bed, engulfing the screaming contestant like a swamp.
His scream abruptly stopped, turning into a gurgling sound as if his throat was being choked. To his roommate's horrified gaze, the black substance enveloped him, solidifying him like a statue, before slowly and completely "merging" into the darkness, disappearing without a trace.
Inside the dormitory, only the terrified roommate remained, along with the distorted music and banging sounds that continued outside the door, seemingly tinged with a sense of satisfaction.
Hongyuan and Youying exchanged a glance as they listened to the last sounds coming from next door, both seeing the heaviness in each other's eyes. Although they had held out for the time being, the price was the death of yet another person.
The sixth day passed slowly amidst the increasingly rampant activation and the deep-seated fear.
Fewer than ten people survived.
