Chapter 51

Abandoned Hospital

On the morning of the sixth day, the remaining sixteen candidates gathered in the relatively safe ward 301 and the nearby corridor. Exhaustion and hunger were etched on everyone's faces, but even more so, shock and anger at learning part of the truth.

Without wasting words, Shi Mo directly showed the evidence he had brought from the dean's office—those photos of the contracts and the actual medicine.

"The cause of this hospital's illness is greed and the abandonment of humanity." Shi Mo's voice was icy, like a scalpel dissecting the cruel reality.

"Families pay 'custodial fees' far less than the cost of treatment, essentially selling their loved ones to the hospital indefinitely. The hospital, in turn, uses the patients' lives and resentment as energy to keep operating. The so-called 'visiting days' are for family members to confirm whether their loved ones are truly dead, so as to put an end to the matter."

He looked at the candidates before him, who had struggled on the brink of life and death for days: "Our mission was to 'find the cause or the cure.' The cause has been found. As for the cure…" He waved the real medicine in his hand, "Is it to expose this lie and treat the patients with real drugs, or… to completely 'cure' this cannibalistic hospital in our own way?"

A deathly silence fell over everyone, broken only by heavy breathing. They hadn't expected the truth behind this instance to be so dark.

"Damn it! These bastards!" One candidate slammed his fist against the wall, his eyes red, whether from anger or something else, it was hard to tell.

"So... the patients we risked our lives to protect were actually sold by their own families..." Hong Yuan's voice trembled slightly.

The doctor adjusted his glasses, his eyes sharp: "Rule number ten is the biggest lie. Patients resent the world that abandoned them, but they are also victims. The root cause lies with their families and the hospital itself."

Shi Mo distributed the actual medicines and nutritional supplements he had brought to everyone: "These can alleviate your and the patients' poisoning symptoms. If you want to survive and complete the mission, we must cooperate."

After obtaining the actual medication and administering it to the participants and patients in the worst condition, the effects were immediate. Their listless spirits lifted slightly, and their weak bodies felt a long-lost strength.

At this moment, the surviving candidates truly began to unite around Shi Mo.

"Shi Mo, what do you suggest? We'll all listen to you!" You Ying was the first to speak up, having witnessed Shi Mo's strength and judgment.

"Yes! We'll do exactly what you say!"

"Expose them! We can't let this kind of place continue to exist!"

Seeing the agitated crowd, Shi Mo nodded: "'Visiting Day' is tomorrow. It's the day families gather, and also the moment for the hospital to 'showcase its achievements.' We'll expose everything then in public."

"How exactly do we do it?" the doctor asked.

Shi Mo's plan was simple and direct, in his usual style: "Hold the ward area and protect the surviving patients. On visiting day, bring the evidence and the patients to the families. Throw the truth in their faces."

He paused, his heterochromatic eyes sweeping over the crowd, his tone calm yet carrying an undeniable authority: "I do not condone this kind of behavior of abandoning family members for personal gain. This hospital has no reason to exist."

His words were not passionate, but they conveyed a chilling determination to everyone.

With the plan finalized, everyone began to use the remaining time to reinforce the defenses, assign tasks, and rest and recuperate.

However, the hospital clearly wouldn't stand idly by while they prepared. On the sixth night, as darkness fell, the hospital's counterattack reached its peak!

Thick, inky black fog nearly blocked the corridor, and countless twisted shadows, monsters in black and white uniforms, and even some mutated patients launched a frenzied attack on the ward area held by the survivors like a tidal wave.

The roars, the crashes, and some kind of evil chanting intertwined, like a sonata from hell.

"Hold on! For tomorrow!" Hong Yuan shouted, brandishing her twin blades and slicing through a dark figure that lunged at her.

The shadowy figure moved like a phantom through the shadows, its dagger precisely piercing the monster's vitals.

Using her understanding of the rules, the doctor set up some simple warnings and obstacles.

Shadow silently guarded the most important entrance, his blade flashing like lightning, instantly dismembering any monster that approached.

Shi Mo sat in the center, his powerful mental perception covering the entire area, like the most accurate radar, constantly issuing commands.

"Three dark figures in the left corridor, disappear!"

"Right front, the caregiver breaks through, Red Kite intercepts!"

Watch out for the ceiling!

His command was calm and efficient, turning the originally chaotic defense line into an orderly one.

Occasionally, monsters would break through the outer perimeter, but he would easily deal with them. He didn't even use much power; he simply relied on his accurate judgment and superhuman physical abilities to defuse one crisis after another.

The battle was fierce and protracted. In the darkest hour before dawn, a candidate responsible for the flank, exhausted, was a step too slow and was seized by a vengeful entity composed of countless tormented faces that seeped from the wall. The entity instantly drained his life force, turning him into a desiccated corpse.

This was the final sacrifice.

As the first rays of dawn pierced the darkness, the hospital's frenzied attack receded like a receding tide. The corridors were a scene of utter devastation, littered with the remains of countless monsters and the cold body of one of their companions.

Fifteen people survived.

They leaned wearily against the wall, their bodies covered in filth and blood, but their eyes were unusually bright and determined.

They held their ground.

They finally got their "visiting day".

The truth is about to be revealed.
