Chapter 48
Abandoned Hospital
On the fourth day, hunger and thirst began to truly torment the surviving candidates.
Their own supplies were exhausted, and no one dared to touch the "food" and "water" provided by the hospital. Everyone's lips were dry and cracked, and their eyes looked somewhat unfocused due to dehydration and the residual effects of mental toxins.
Rule 8, which states that "Patient activity time is from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM daily, and patients must be taken to the activity room for social interaction," has become the new focus.
"Do I have to go?" A contestant with a hoarse voice leaned against the wall and asked weakly, "I feel... I'm not feeling well."
The professor adjusted his slipped glasses, his gaze behind the lenses filled with deep weariness and vigilance: "The rules clearly state 'must.' But considering the previously discovered false rules... I suspect there's something wrong with the activity room itself."
Shi Mo stood at the door of ward 301, looking at Mr. Chen on the bed whose breathing was getting weaker and weaker, his heterochromatic eyes narrowed slightly.
He could sense more clearly than others that a very subtle yet continuous suction force was coming from the direction of the activity room. It was as if something was greedily drawing in life energy.
"There's a problem with the activity room," Shi Mo said to Hong Yuan and You Ying who were walking over. "There might be a life-draining magic circle there."
Hong Yuan's expression changed: "Are you sure?"
"Your senses are never wrong," Shi Mo said with certainty. "The longer you stay, the more you'll be absorbed."
However, the clock struck two in the afternoon precisely as scheduled. The head nurse's stiff figure appeared at the end of the corridor, her empty eyes sweeping over the doors of each ward.
no choice.
The candidates, exhausted and accompanied by their equally unwell patients, had to drag themselves back to the activity room.
Upon entering the activity room, Shi Mo's senses became even clearer.
Beneath the cold floor beneath their feet, a massive, invisible vortex seemed to lurk, stripping away wisps of life force from every living being present, draining them into the earth. The patients' already feeble life force flickered like candles in the wind, while the already weakened contestants visibly paled.
The candidate, who was already weak due to dietary problems, suddenly started coughing violently shortly after entering the activity room. His body was visibly hunched over and aged, his skin lost its luster, and his hair turned gray!
He opened his eyes wide in terror, wanting to cry for help but unable to make a sound.
Just as he collapsed to the ground, from the shadows in the corner of the activity room, a black monster composed of countless painful faces and twisted limbs, exuding intense resentment, suddenly pounced out, like a predatory hyena, dragging the rapidly aging contestant into the depths of the shadows, leaving only an abrupt scream and a few strands of gray hair falling.
Rule Eight is a trap! The activity room is a public hell that slowly reaps lives!
"Rule Eight is fake!" Shadow roared first. "We can't stay here!"
"Go! Get out of here quickly!" Hong Yuan shouted immediately.
The surviving candidates, as if waking from a dream, frantically tried to escape the activity room with their patients.
However, their resistance immediately drew the ire of the "medical staff."
The head nurse's flat, emotionless voice rang out: "Violation of regulations, leaving the activity area without authorization."
From the shadows behind her emerged several "caregivers" dressed in white uniforms, but with distorted faces and fierce eyes. They carried stun guns, restraints, and other items, exuding a dangerous aura.
The conflict erupted instantly!
"Damn it! Let's fight them!" A hot-tempered candidate drew his weapon and charged at a caregiver.
But how could they, in their poor condition, be a match for this collective resentment from the hospital? Soon, candidates were knocked to the ground and dragged away.
Shi Mo stood protectively in front of Mr. Chen's wheelchair, his eyes cold.
A caregiver charged at him, brandishing a stun gun. Shi Mo didn't even use much force; he simply sidestepped the attack and delivered a precise kick to the caregiver's knee.
"Crack!" A tooth-grinding sound of bone breaking rang out, and the caregiver let out a strange roar before collapsing to the ground, unable to get up.
His clean and efficient movements attracted the attention of more caregivers. At the same time, he also noticed that as long as he did not leave the activity room area or show any obvious intention to "resist," the aggression of those caregivers and head nurses seemed to be limited.
"Don't fight head-on!" Shi Mo hissed to Hong Yuan and You Ying. "The rules only say 'you must bring the patient to the activity room,' not 'you must stay for two hours!' Find an opportunity to move to the door and then rush out!"
As he spoke, he pushed Mr. Chen's wheelchair, seemingly taking a "stroll" in the activity room, but in reality, he cleverly used the obstruction of other candidates and patients to slowly approach the door.
Several quick-witted candidates immediately understood Shi Mo's meaning and began to follow suit.
The head nurse and caregivers tried to stop them, but with Shi Mo's precise "guidance" and occasional "just right" interference, seven or eight people, including Shi Mo, Hong Yuan, You Ying, the doctor, and Ying, successfully led their patients out of the activity room and back to the relatively "safe" corridor.
Behind them, the door to the activity room slammed shut, and screams and sounds of fighting came from inside those who had failed to escape.
After this conflict, most of the surviving candidates have deduced the three obvious pitfalls: Rule 4 (midnight medication pickup), Rule 8 (social interaction in the activity room), and Rule 9 (food safety).
The number of survivors decreased further, but the remaining people had less confusion in their eyes and more ruthlessness and determination.
They began to spontaneously form closer-knit groups, sharing limited information and resources, trying to find flaws in this evil hospital and fight against its cannibalistic rules.
The survivors of the B-level dungeon, having learned from the lessons of bloodshed and death, have finally begun to shift from passively complying to actively resisting.
