Chapter 38
What the hell does it mean to carry two people to a touchdown?!
Looking at Travis's confident expression, Li Wei took a bite of the heavily floury fried chicken without commenting.
"Damn, this bite feels like half of it is breadcrumbs!" Li Wei thought to himself as he quickly swallowed the fried chicken.
"Trust me, I played in the amateur youth leagues in Brooklyn before," Travis said in a low voice, pointing to the area in the cafeteria where the loudest laughter and most boisterous movements were taking place. "Those guys are bastards. They like to bully newbies, especially Asians like you. When you're trying out later, stick behind me, I'll protect you."
Li Wei smiled and did not refute.
...
At 2 p.m., the New York sun was still scorching in late August, and the air was filled with a mixture of dry dust and the smell of grass after a lawnmower had cut it.
The walls of Franklin K. Lane High School's playground are covered in layers of graffiti, making it look more like a prison than a high school.
You have arrived at the "Courtroom Duel"
This is where knightly honor is upheld and disputes are resolved; conflicts often erupt here in the name of chivalry.
"Bang!"
Levi and Travis watched as two towering Black teenagers collided violently in the center of the field. The sound of helmets clashing against each other was particularly jarring on the empty playground.
Li Wei recognized one of the fully armed teenagers as Manu, the defensive tackle he had encountered in the gym earlier.
"Hey! You two! What are you doing?"
Under the parasol, among a group of rugby players, a middle-aged Black man wearing a gray sports vest and a whistle around his neck emerged.
His skin was dark, his arms had bulging, aged muscles, and his eyes behind sunglasses were sweeping over Levi and Travis with displeasure.
"If you don't have anything to do, don't disturb our training," he said rudely. "Or are you here for a tryout?"
"Travis Watson! I want to try out for running back or safety!" Travis shouted. "I used to play in the Brooklyn junior league."
"I remember you, I have a vague impression of you," Coach Miller glanced at Travis, "You're exempt from the test and can join the team directly. You'll start training officially after the start of the semester."
"As for you..." He turned to look at Li Wei, then slapped his forehead. "Kid, this isn't the International Mathematical Olympiad. I don't need idiots who can only wipe their noses with tissues."
A group of athletes wearing rugby gear behind him burst into laughter.
"My name is Li Wei," Li Wei said calmly. "I'd like to try out for quarterback."
Upon hearing this, not only did the athletes who were watching the spectacle erupt in even louder laughter, but even the black coach Miller couldn't help but chuckle.
Simply put, rugby is divided into an offensive team and a defensive team. The two teams compete for a single rugby ball, and each team hopes that its player can carry the ball into the opponent's end zone to score a goal.
Manu's position is called defensive tackle, and his responsibility is to withstand the opponent's attack head-on and prevent the opponent from entering his half of the court. He is the strongest and heaviest player on the team.
Travis's position is called running back, and his responsibility is to try to break through the defensive half of the court on the offensive side. It is a position that requires more strength and running speed.
The core of the team is undoubtedly the quarterback, who needs to be more well-rounded. He is responsible for directing who will guard whom and who will break through whom. He is the brain of the team and can also break through the opponent's defense with the ball when necessary.
Coach Miller laughed for quite a while before stopping.
"Hmm... kid," he looked at the muscular Levi, "have you ever played rugby before?"
Li Wei shook his head.
"But you still need to try out for the quarterback?"
Li Wei nodded.
"Listen, since you have no track record and have never played quarterback before," Miller said, suppressing a laugh, "there's no way I'm going to let you take over right away."
"Then can you give me a chance?" Li Wei remained unmoved. "How am I supposed to prove myself?"
Coach Miller turned to look at the field, picked up the whistle hanging around his neck and blew it sharply, summoning several towering defensive mainstays. A cruel smile curled at the corner of his mouth.
"On my team, a quarterback not only has to be able to throw the ball, but also to survive against beasts weighing over 120 kilograms," Miller said, tucking the splint under his arm. "Since you think you can do it, let's play something simple. Red zone offense and defense, last five yards. You bring the ball, and if you can get into the touchdown zone, I'll give you a chance."

Travis, who was standing nearby, glared at this outrageous request and was about to speak when Levi stopped him.
"Isn't this racial discrimination against me?" Levi looked closely at the group of fat men, each one a size larger than himself. "As far as I know, a quarterback's ability doesn't require strong driving skills."
"Discrimination? No, as long as you can prove your ability, I treat all races equally. If you're a spineless piece of trash, I'll kick your ass," Miller shrugged. "This is my team! I call the shots on my team, and the principal can't change my decision."
"Fuck you, you stupid black bastard."
Li Wei spoke calmly in Chinese.
"But is this what you said? I can make the team as long as I score a touchdown?"
He switched back to English.
“That’s right,” Miller knew Levi was insulting him, but he didn’t care; instead, he gloated. “I mean what I say.”
"Wait, Coach, I need to go to the bathroom!" Manu suddenly recognized Levi and his expression changed drastically. He immediately raised his hand to signal, "Coach, I need to use the restroom!"
"You idiot, you're all talk and no action, get out of here!" Miller complained, then picked a defensive tackle slightly smaller than Manu. "Tony, you come here!"
"Are there any shared protective gear options?" Li Wei readily agreed. "I can't possibly bear it with my bare hands, can I?"
Although Miller looked down on Levi from the bottom of his heart, he didn't dare let him play without protective gear. He had an athlete bring a spare set of protective gear for Levi to wear, and even gave Levi a brand new mouthguard.
He then positioned three defensive tackles side-by-side at the five-yard line, almost completely blocking out the sunlight from Levi's view.
The instant Miller put the whistle to his lips, Levi activated [Berserk]!

Agility 1.6 - Agility 3.2
"Thump--Thump--Thump--"
Li Wei could clearly hear his own heartbeat, and his whole body felt like it was on fire, the sound of his blood surging through his veins like a mighty river.
"start!"
With a whistle from Coach Miller, Levi charged straight towards the center of the defense like a cannonball, clutching the ball. He simply followed the principle that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line and charged forward.
Tony, in the middle, felt a blur before his eyes. Before he could react, he felt as if he were flying, his whole body flying uncontrollably to the side.
His weight of over 120 kilograms was like paper in front of Li Wei, and he was mercilessly smashed open.
Seeing this, the two interceptors rushed up from the flank like madmen. One of them grabbed Li Wei's waist, while the other simply jumped up and hung on Li Wei's shoulder, trying to pin him down.
This is a common tactic in rugby, where players stack themselves on top of each other to break down the opponent's attack.
However, under immense pressure, Li Wei's steps only paused for less than half a second.
With the power boost of 3.6, his strength had completely surpassed human limits. His legs moved wildly like hydraulic cylinders, and his whole body was like a bulldozer at full power, forcefully pushing the two "mountains of flesh" backward!
No matter how the two tacklers, whose combined weight exceeded 500 pounds, tried to stop him, even though their shoes were already embedded in the grass, it was still like a mantis trying to stop a chariot in the face of Li Wei's strength.
Their weight was their city wall, but today, in front of Li Wei, that so-called city wall was as ridiculous as a mound of earth destroyed by a tsunami.
One step! Two steps! Three steps!
When Li Wei took the final step, his body leaning forward, and the two people hanging on him crashed heavily into the white line of the touchdown zone, the entire field fell into a deathly silence.
[Mission Complete: Triumphant Return!]
This was a resounding victory!
