Chapter 51
Is this Dark Elf serious?
"This is outrageous..." Li Wei was still thinking about it on the subway. "The GG has come back to haunt me."
He had just graduated from Franklin High School and was on his way to his part-time job.
Coach Miller just kept him behind and tried his best to persuade Levi to cooperate with him. He didn't even need Levi to actually use the product; he just needed Levi to cooperate with the publicity.
"Look at your physical abilities," he waved the scoreboard in his hand, "You'll be a TikTok superstar, you'll be the hottest high school student in America, and we can make hundreds of thousands, millions of dollars together!"
"Well said," Levi said. "So, how much money are you planning to give me?"
"For every person you bring in," Miller said, "I'll give you 20% commission."
"20% is too little," Li Wei said. "I want 90%!"
"Fuck you, you greedy brat! Get out!"
...
The 90% figure was just something Li Wei said offhand; after all, he wasn't entirely against selling his conscience, but Miller's offer wasn't high enough at the moment.
How much money can you make from poor people? How much can you squeeze out of students in Brooklyn and Queens? If you're going to sell your conscience, you have to make money off the rich.
If Miller offered him a million dollars for recruiting someone, he might hesitate a bit longer.
If you want to make money now, it seems you either have to work hard to earn money from those rich women, or you can only hope that Don Quixote will rise again and take you flying.
Li Wei couldn't help but think of Elizabeth Mellon, whom he had met before.
The thought that she earns over ten thousand US dollars a month just for pocket money fills me with longing and anticipation, and even makes me more energetic at work.
I wonder when this super-rich girl will visit the boutique again. Ideally, she'll buy a bag worth $100 million in one go and give him a $5000 tip. That way, he can get a $2 commission and tip after tax, which, combined with his scholarship, will cover his first year's tuition.
With such expectations in mind, Li Wei arrived at Dolores's boutique.
Unfortunately, the super-rich Elizabeth didn't come to the store, but Emma was there today, looking exhausted and miserable.
"Why didn't you come to work last time?" Li Wei asked casually. "Were you sick?"
"Sukabrie—ha—don't say anymore," Emma yawned widely, "I've been dragged around doing chores by Mrs. Dolores lately, running errands all over the place."
Levi remembered Lady Dolores's admonitions and warnings and resolved not to meddle, but Emma was a big mouth and was willing to tell Levi everything.
Through Emma, Levi learns that Mrs. Dolores has a frenemy. This friend recently had a falling out with Mrs. Dolores and ended up stealing a very valuable piece of jewelry from her house.
Emma has been keeping an eye on this friend for Mrs. Dolores these past few days, trying to see if she can get the jewelry back.
"Can't we call the police?" Li Wei asked calmly. "Shouldn't we contact the police if it's lost?"
"Mrs. Dolores and her friends are respectable people," Emma shook her head. "They don't want to make a big deal out of it and hope to resolve it privately. After all, everyone knows each other on the surface, and they don't want things to look bad."
"Never mind," she waved her hand, "They're all just trivial matters. Come on, I've had Mrs. Dolores switch dessert suppliers. We're a bit tired of the macarons from last time, so let's try their Basque cake this time..."
After spending another afternoon stealing wages at Dolores's boutique, Levi returned home that evening.
There was still no news from Jose, and Don Quixote suspected that he might have left New York.
Late that night, Don Quixote began sleepwalking again.
"Don Quixote," Livy nodded to him, "long time no see."
"Long time no see???" Don Quixote exclaimed in surprise, his eyes still closed. "Didn't we just see each other this morning?"
Damn it! Who knows how time flows in your dream? Li Wei silently complained.
Last time, 10 days apart felt like 10 months in my dream. I wonder what it will be like this time.
"We cleared out the Hellfire Red Dwarves this morning," Levi decided to get straight to the point, "What are we going to do now?"
"We've cleared out the Hellfire Dwarves," Don Quixote whispered. "Now we're heading into the Monster Forest. Be very careful; there are not only sleeping dragons inside, but also dark elves."
Suddenly, he looked Li Wei up and down and frowned.
"My friend," he said, "don't you know how to stealth yet?"
"I am a knight," Levi said, shrugging. "Why would I need to know stealth?"
"Even though you're a knight," Don Quixote said, frowning, "you should still learn stealth skills, otherwise how will you deal with those dark elves hiding in the shadows?"
After saying that, he raised his hand and aimed it at Li Wei.
[Donquixote Knight offers you the skill 'Stealth (Temporary)'. Would you like to learn it?]
【whether】
Li Wei almost popped his eyes out.
Are you kidding me? How can you do this?
You have learned the skill 'Stealth (Temporary)'
[Stealth (Temporary): Conceals your presence for 60 seconds. Unless there is special detection magic, you will not be detected by the naked eye.]
Li Wei was overjoyed.
This stealth ability is nothing short of a god-level skill. The "spotlight magic" probably refers to a camera? In other words, without a camera, most people can't see me?
"What other skills do you have?" he asked hastily. "Could you teach me?"
"Alright, my friend," Don Quixote waved his hand and turned to leave, "I can only let you experience the effects of this power briefly; whether you can master it is up to you. Now, let's head towards the Monster Forest."
You have received a quest: Traverse the dark monster forest.
[A type of dark elf lives in the Demon Forest. They are foolish, lazy, and prone to thievery, yet physically strong. As a subspecies of elf, they often boast that they are also legitimate elves. After a dark elf was executed for theft, they launched a massive movement called "Dark Elf Lives Matter Too."]
【Mission 1: Traverse the Monster Forest】
[Task Reward: Constitution +0.1]
[Task 2 (Optional): Capture a Dark Elf]
[Quest Reward: Permanently gain the skill 'Stealth', Agility +0.1]
[Skill Description: Black is my talent, and the night is my camouflage]
?
A question mark appeared in Li Wei's mind: Is this a legitimate dark elf? Is he sure he's not talking about Brother Ni?
Just as Li Wei was thinking this, he saw Don Quixote take out the iron rod that he had found somewhere before and go out the door.
Livy had no time to think and could only follow Don Quixote step by step.
The moon is bright and the stars are few; the sky is clear and the air is crisp.
A gentle sea breeze blew as Livy and Don Quixote walked down the street, one after the other.
Although the system never malfunctioned, Li Wei still felt uneasy looking at the bare street.
"Don Quixote," he called to Don Quixote, "will we encounter dark elves this time?"
"Uncertain, knight," Don Quixote said without turning his head, gripping his iron rod, "but be careful, they can easily merge with the darkness—aha!"
Before he could finish speaking, he shouted and raised the iron rod, pointing it forward.
Li Wei looked in the direction he pointed and saw a black figure, almost blending into the environment, sneaking out of a house under the streetlights.
"Dark Elf!" Don Quixote roared, charging forward. "Halt! How dare you commit such a despicable act in front of two knights!"
