Chapter 67
Today is the best opportunity to take advantage of the chaos.
"I wouldn't say we know each other, we've met twice," Li Wei explained. "He also has a son at our school, but I don't think I've ever met him..."
Then he told Wen Si and Miller the whole story.
"Huh? There really are people like that? Bringing their whole family to America?" Miller said as if he had heard a funny joke. "He thinks not charging a registration fee means it's free? In America, there's only one thing that's free, and that's a ticket to hell."
"But you know what, he might actually embezzle the money," Wen thought for a moment, "but the price would be being an unregistered person for life, with no credit score and no legal status. He wouldn't be able to find a job or rent a place."
"Stay away from these kinds of people. I asked you earlier because I was worried you might get entangled with some people," he patted Li Wei on the shoulder. "You're about to become a big star, and it's not impossible for you to have tens or hundreds of millions of dollars in assets in the future. At this time, you should be especially careful of your poor relatives, especially your classmates, friends, and distant relatives."
"I've seen too much of this," he said very seriously. "It's more common among rap stars, sports stars, and Black people, but because I don't have much contact with Chinese people, I don't know the situation, so I have to remind you a bit more."
Li Wei nodded, keeping Wen Si's instructions in mind.
He's practically Wensi's darling now. Wensi is counting on discovering Li Wei as a topic of conversation so she can get a promotion, a raise, and reach the pinnacle of her life. She's practically ready to adopt him as her godson.
On the way home, Coach Miller and scout Wen Si got into a big argument over the right to take Levi home. In the end, scout Wen Si won by saying, "You brought him here, now it's my turn to take him back," and successfully won the right to take Levi home.
"Uncle Don Quixote?"
When Li Wei returned home, he found that the living room had welcomed its first guest besides the two of them—José.
After a few days of rest, he felt much better, but he still looked like he could fall ill at any moment.
"...Don't worry," Don Quixote said with great certainty, "I had a colleague who did the bookkeeping for British mafia families. It's almost impossible to keep the ledgers of underground casinos in a safe, because the transactions of underground casinos or loan sharks are extremely fragmented, with dozens or even hundreds of transactions every hour. Do you expect to open the safe every time?"
"So the ledger is most likely in an office drawer," he said, "or a fake ledger on the desk and a real one in the drawer."
"We're leaving today?" Li Wei looked at Don Quixote. "Aren't we going to wait a little longer?"
"We can't wait any longer," Don Quixote shook his head. "José's friend who's keeping watch at the construction site said that someone caused trouble at the casino tonight, resulting in quite a disturbance. They'll probably move to another location tomorrow, so today is the best opportunity to take advantage of the chaos."
Li Wei nodded, but before he could speak, another dialog box popped up in front of him:
You have received a mission: The Unfinished Business
Don Quixote himself was still somewhat uneasy about entrusting his servant José with the task. His intuition and reason told him that José was not a good person to entrust with the task, but he also felt that this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
As his friend, you want to help him, but you don't want him to know.
[Mission Requirements: Secretly assist the two in completing their mission and obtaining what Don Quixote desires.]
[Task Reward: Agility +0.1]
Sure enough, as Li Wei looked at the task, he thought to himself that Don Quixote himself was also feeling uneasy about the variable of José.
He originally thought that Hesai was in relatively good physical and mental condition and might be able to complete the task.
But judging from his current state, the chances of success have probably dropped significantly.
...
The night in Queens is like a stagnant pool, with only the distant sound of police sirens causing a ripple.
An old Toyota was parked on the roadside not far from the construction site, with Don Quixote and José sitting inside.
"Don't let your hands shake," Don Quixote patted José on the shoulder. "Relax, just pretend you're really going to have fun. I'll wait for you here."
"But... I'm still scared, Don," José said, trembling. "They're all devils..."
"Don't mess this up, José..." Don Quixote grabbed José's hair, their foreheads touching. "Think about it, your life, your wife's life, even my life, are all tied together."
"If you're not confident, then back out, understand? We'll find another opportunity," he said, his expression stern, his tone like a knife. "Don't drag yourself into this... and if you do, don't drag me into it either—"
“Mr. Don Quixote,” José interrupted him, “in the name of God, I will absolutely not involve you.”
"You're a good person," he took a deep breath, "the only good person I've met here."
"Half and half," Don Quixote swallowed the rest of his sentence, patted José on the shoulder, and said, "Go, boy."
...
What are those two whispering about?
Li Wei looked at Toyota from afar, somewhat speechless.
Like a mantis stalking a cicada, unaware of the oriole behind, he had been staking out for over an hour, but damn it, Jose was still dragging his feet and not making a move.
He couldn't use his phone for this operation, so he just waited in the shadows for over an hour.
Finally, he saw José get out of the passenger seat and stagger toward the casino.
Li Wei trailed far behind José.
His physical evolution has greatly enhanced his night vision, allowing him to see everything clearly even in dim light.
José slowly arrived at a factory building, where two Italian thugs stood at the entrance.
One of them clearly recognized José and joked, "It's you again, here to buy 'energizers'?"
"Who can live without our concoction of energy drinks?" another person laughed. "Methamphetamine mixed with a small amount of alprazolam, and a tiny bit of fentanyl, can make you work for 12 hours straight without feeling tired."
"Let's not talk about work," the first person clicked his tongue, "Do you remember our last gathering? After using it, I couldn't get hard for a full four hours."
"No," José forced a smile, "I'm just here to play a couple of rounds and see if I can turn things around."
Just as they were joking with José, a figure silently circled around to the door and climbed up to the second floor of the tin factory building in a manner that no human could accomplish.
The second-floor window wasn't locked, perhaps because no one expected someone to be able to climb up the smooth, nearly 10-meter-high window with their bare hands.
Li Wei easily climbed through the window. He crouched low and groped his way forward along the shadows of the second-floor corridor. Looking down from this vantage point, the once narrow factory interior had been completely opened up and was brightly lit.
Below was a noisy sea. A dozen huge gambling tables and poker tables were crowded with people, and all sorts of slot machines were placed around them.
Li Wei roughly estimated that this one casino alone could generate more than seventy or eighty thousand US dollars in turnover per day.
Moreover, the real source of exorbitant profits lies in usury.
According to Jose, the gang that controls this construction site typically operates on a "6-for-5" lending model, meaning borrowing $500 this week and repaying $600 next week, with a weekly interest rate of 20%.
Li Wei saw a noise coming from the doorway, and José also came in.
After José entered, he quickly found Leto's office—at the end of the corridor on the second floor.
But to his dismay, he discovered that two burly Italian thugs were always standing at the top of the stairs leading to the second floor.
Leto, that old fox, left absolutely no opening for him to exploit. Forget about sneaking in to steal the ledgers; if he dared to linger at the stairwell for even a few seconds longer, those two thugs, with their bulging waistbands, would teach him a lesson with their American-style iaido.
As time ticked by, José felt his heart was about to leap out of his throat.
He had to do something, otherwise tonight would be a complete waste of time.
He instinctively walked to a Texas Hold'em table, casually placing bets while his eyes darted around, cold sweat dripping down his face.
On the other side, some people were also watching Jose.
"Why is this guy so nervous?" one of the henchmen said. "Is he trying to cheat?"
"Go check him out and see if he brought any cheaters."
As José turned his head, he suddenly noticed several people walking towards him.
He was so frightened that his heart felt like it was going to jump out of his throat.
