Chapter 47

: The Succubus Cave Ahead

The announcer's voice on the television gradually became the background, blurry and indistinct, and was covered by Don Quixote's voice.

"Luckily I ran fast," he said, holding a can of beer and watching the news on TV. "Otherwise, I feel like I would have been in trouble too, what if I had gotten sick or injured..."

He shook his head and downed his beer in one gulp.

"But what's the real situation with your construction site?" Li Wei sat down next to him. "How come it's connected to the Russian mafia again?"

"The name Leto sounds a bit Italian, and I've always felt he had some connection to Sicily," Don Quixote thought for a moment, putting down his beer. "He was always gambling and supplying drugs at that construction site, and I think that's why."

"The Russian Mafia and the Italian Mafia have a conflict?" Levi asked. "I didn't expect that Leto had this background."

Don Quixote looked at Levi and snorted, seemingly expressing some strange laughter: "Watch less 'The Godfather.' The Mafia these days is different from what it used to be. Everyone has a public identity now, at least in New York."

Li Wei nodded, and just as he was about to go upstairs, he suddenly seemed to remember something.

"You're going on a date with Susan tomorrow, right?" Levi asked. "Have you thought about what to do?"

Upon hearing this, Don Quixote suddenly felt that even the ice-cold beer in his mouth had lost its flavor.

"God," he groaned, rubbing his face, "I wish I could get beaten up right now—but never mind, I'd rather the world end tomorrow."

Li Wei smiled but didn't say anything.

The next day, Li Wei received more good news in the director of teaching's office.

"Recently, all the public schools in Brooklyn have received donations from a foundation that will provide scholarships and college recommendation letters for outstanding students," the academic director said, crossing his arms as he looked at Li Wei. "Your AP Calculus teacher and Mrs. Mosley, who teaches AP Macroeconomics, were very impressed with you, and you joined the starting football team right away, right?"

Li Wei nodded.

"I understand... You're from a minority group, have no tattoos or other bad habits, are excellent in both character and academics, and have athletic talent," the head of academics said, increasingly satisfied with Li Wei. "And I heard that your parents are deceased and you live with an uncle who doesn't have a formal job?"

Li Wei nodded again.

"Very good—oh no, I'm sorry to hear that," the head of academic affairs coughed twice, "Anyway, we've already put your name on the list, and if all goes well, you should be able to get the scholarship."

"How much money?" Li Wei automatically ignored the head of teaching's slip of the tongue. "How much will I get?"

"It's a one-time payment of around $3 after tax," the academic director said. "However, it's a long process. It requires the consent of us teachers and coaches, then we have to submit the list to the foundation, and then the foundation will review it and interview the students. So please wait patiently. I'm just informing you, Mr. Li Wei."

Li Wei was overjoyed to hear that he could get a scholarship without having to do anything.

"Thank you, Director Jamal," Li Wei bowed to the director, "thank you for adding my name."

"This is a win-win situation, Mr. Levi," Director Jamal smiled and shrugged. "As long as you study hard and get into a good university, it will be a cause for celebration for Franklin K. Lane High School as well."

"However, you may need to cooperate with the foundation on some promotional activities and participate in some public projects in art galleries and communities," he said. "Please understand, but I can assure you that these activities will only take about 40 hours a year."

Li Wei nodded in understanding. If nothing was required, that would be something to be wary of. Now that the requirements were stated, he actually felt that the scholarship program made sense.

After school at noon, Li Wei didn't go to the gym with Travis, but instead chose to continue working part-time on the Upper East Side.

Compared to his teammates on the rugby team who were simultaneously receiving medication and lifting weights, Li Wei's growth rate through the system's point allocation method was much faster than simply lifting weights in the gym. He only went to the gym to record his strength level in order to avoid accidentally injuring someone due to a lack of understanding of his own strength.

On the Upper East Side, the Dolores boutique remains deserted.

Previously, Li Wei had worried about the success of Madame Dolores' boutique. What if it continued to lose money and eventually closed down? Wouldn't that mean he could no longer be a payroll thief?

However, after seeing the news yesterday, and considering the strange statue that Li Wei moved, as well as Mrs. Dolores's strange behavior, it was hard for Li Wei not to connect the dots.

Recalling Lady Dolores's earlier hints and reminders deepened Li Wei's doubts.

While looking for his work partner, he suddenly realized that Emma seemed to be absent today, and he didn't know where she was.

Mrs. Dolores wasn't in the store either. Levi and another sales assistant spent the entire afternoon staring blankly at this priceless shop.

At the same time, Li Wei discovered something—the statue he had moved last time was gone.

After an ordinary part-time job, when Li Wei returned home, Don Quixote had already left. His clothes were scattered on the bed and all over the floor, presumably after agonizing for a long time over what to wear.

Li Wei wandered around aimlessly, just about to explore and see if he could unlock any new locations or trigger any new missions, when his phone suddenly rang.

"Feed?" Li Wei answered the phone. "Daphne?"

"Hi, it's me," Daphne said. "I called to ask if you have any plans for tonight. Britney's throwing a party, and it's the weekend tomorrow. Want to come over?"

Li Wei glanced around the empty room, hesitated for a moment, and said, "I do have some free time now, send me the address."

Li Wei heard a small cheer coming from the other end of the phone.

"Then I'll send you the address," Daphne said smugly. "Britney's parents are on vacation, and her house is empty all weekend."

Shortly after the call ended, Daphne sent an address.

Li Wei looked closely and realized that this was a middle-class community in Queens, not far from Bell Ridge.

However, just as he stepped out the door, another phone call came in.

"Um...Samantha?" Levi asked, "Is there something you need?"

"Well, Britney's parents aren't home, but we've managed to snag some good stuff," Samantha said. "Would you like to come to the party? It's mostly our classmates, no street people."

"Um..." Li Wei thought about it seriously for a while, and finally agreed, "Okay, I'll be there in a bit."

“Good, I see Daphne in the living room,” Samantha said. “When you come in later, come in through the back door and don’t attract her attention.”

After taking the subway for more than half an hour and then transferring to a bus, Li Wei finally arrived at Britney's house as dusk fell.

At this moment, there were already many motorcycles and cars parked in front of the detached villa, and some men and women of similar age to him were dancing, drinking and chatting around the house.

A dialog box suddenly popped up in front of Li Wei's eyes:

You have arrived at the 'Succubus Cavern'.

Succubi are dangerous; a very small number of them even carry long-term debuffs.

[Detected that you possess 'Knight - Bronze Body (Transcendent)', granting immunity to debuffs on succubi.]

[Class detected: Hero Knight, increases damage against humanoid monsters by 35%]
