Chapter 42
This gigolo might be a bit too tough.
"And who is Elizabeth Mellon?"
Li Wei and Emma walked at the very back and entered the store together.
"The name Elizabeth isn't unusual; what's unusual is Mellon," Emma thought for a moment and gave Levi an example, "Carnegie Mellon University, ever heard of it?"
Li Wei nodded.
Carnegie Mellon University is a top 30 university in the United States that has consistently ranked among the top universities for many years, and its computer science and data science programs have consistently ranked among the top 5 in the world.
"Her Mellon, that Mellon," Emma said quietly. "Similarly, there's a bank on Wall Street called Bank of New York Mellon, which manages over $20 trillion in assets."
Speaking of this, Li Wei suddenly remembered what he learned in history class: in 1929, the United States experienced the largest economic crisis in capitalist history. At that time, American farms dumped milk directly into the Mississippi River in order to destroy "surplus" products.
A popular children's song in New York at the time went: "Mellon blows the whistle, Hoover rings the bell. Wall Street gives the signal, America is heading straight for hell!"
Is her Mellon the same Mellon?!
"You mean you want me to live off her?" Li Wei's eyes widened. "Are you kidding me?"
Emma said somewhat embarrassedly, "I only heard about it from Mrs. Dolores after I got off work in the evening. And she came to rent the necklace, not to buy it. Children from wealthy families usually take money from trust funds every month. I originally thought she was a nouveau riche, but I didn't expect her to be a real heir to old money."
"This time, the gigolo might be a bit tough. These kinds of rich girls are always hard to deal with," she said, then looked on with concern for Li Wei. "Oh dear, how are you going to win her over?"
"So what if I offend her?" Levi said casually, "you'd probably see me on the lower Mississippi the next day."
"It's not necessarily true," Emma said with a grin, patting him on the shoulder. "Fortune favors the bold."
The two followed one after the other, keeping a distance behind Elizabeth and Mrs. Dolores.
Upon arriving on the second floor, the lights in the entire store were dimmed, and the doors and windows were tightly closed.
Elizabeth Mellon sat in the VIP room, accompanied by Mrs. Dolores.
In front of her were five open safes, each containing a full set of exquisite jewelry set against a backdrop of black velvet.
"This ruby tiara comes from 19th-century St. Petersburg and is said to have been part of the Empress's collection; while this set is a Victorian-era sapphire necklace..."
Mrs. Dolores's voice echoed in the quiet second floor, contrasting sharply with Elizabeth's slightly furrowed brow.
"Mrs. Dolores, this is so difficult," she sighed. "You have such excellent taste; your eye is impeccable. Every single one of them is exactly what I wanted."
In Li Wei's mind, another task panel popped up, notifying him that he had accepted a task.
You have received a mission: The Princess's Dilemma.
As a knight, assist Princess Elizabeth Mellon in making her choice.
[Task Reward: 0.1 Free Attribute Point]
Li Wei took a deep breath. Although the task seemed good, he was still somewhat resistant and didn't want to accept it.
This Elizabeth Mellon looks incredibly powerful; he doesn't think someone like her would be attracted to her face and figure.
Moreover, once you attract her attention, it might lead to some unnecessary trouble later on.
This is a real old American money family, not some black high school coach or street thug.
I don't need the 0.1 attribute point. I might get it in the next mission. There's no need to get myself into trouble. After all, I'm not Captain America with bulletproof armor, nor Superman with his underwear on the outside. I can't withstand American-style iaido.
As Li Wei pondered this, he quietly took a step back.
"The Mellon Museum of Art in Brooklyn is opening next month, isn't it? What's the theme?" Mrs. Dolores asked. "Perhaps I can offer some suggestions?"
"It's 'Reshaping Light and Shadow,' after all, I'm going to Yale's art department next year, and my grandfather gave me an exhibition hall so I can do whatever I want," Elizabeth casually picked up the ruby tiara and examined it carefully, "but I really can't choose one. The amount of money I can get from the trust each month is so limited, even if I rent, I can only rent one place..."
"Then I recommend this sapphire set to you. Its blue purity isn't very high, but that will actually make your eye color appear even bluer..."
Just as Dolores was about to offer further advice, a series of hurried footsteps approached.
A security guard who had been standing guard at the door appeared at the stairwell with Dolores's phone and waved it in front of Mrs. Dolores.
Mrs. Dolores frowned and met his gaze several times. When she realized that he still refused to go down, she took a deep breath, looked at Elizabeth, and her eyes were filled with apology.
"I'm so sorry, Miss Elizabeth," she said, "please allow me to take this call."
"I told you, just call me Liz," Elizabeth said with a sweet smile. "Work is important, I'll just sit here for a while."
"Then I'll have my staff come over here to help you choose. If there's anything else you like, feel free to pick it out," Mrs. Dolores said. "Consider it an apology for my abrupt departure."
Her gaze swept over Levi, Emma, and the other two sales associates before she said, "Levi is one of our best employees. Let him replace me."
broken!
Li Wei's heart skipped a beat.
When I was working part-time before, many regular customers had their own sales assistants, so the store would only assign tasks to Li Wei when they encountered new customers.
He almost always managed to persuade people to buy items and leave tips by using his eloquent speech, which made him appear as a capable and eloquent employee in Mrs. Dolores' eyes.
With everyone's eyes on him, Li Wei had no choice but to bite the bullet and walk to Elizabeth's side, crouching down slightly below her with his gaze lower than hers.
"You look about my age, and you've become an outstanding employee?" Elizabeth smiled sweetly. "You're amazing! Did you even graduate high school?"
“I’m in school, 12th grade,” Levi said, “over in Brooklyn.”
However, whether she was uninterested, had never heard of it, or simply wanted to exchange polite greetings, Elizabeth did not continue speaking.
She continued to focus her attention on the necklace in front of her, and it seemed that she had already chosen two out of five sets, but was struggling to decide between them.
Logically speaking, blue would be more suitable for Elizabeth's status as an heiress to a wealthy family, as it suggests a low-key, reserved, and unassuming personality.
But for some reason, perhaps it was some kind of premonition, Li Wei felt that Elizabeth might prefer the Empress's ruby tiara.
Finally, he tried using the "Eloquent Talk" skill to persuade him:
"Miss Elizabeth," Levi began, "I suggest you choose the ruby tiara."
Elizabeth, who had been unconsciously fiddling with the pendant on her sapphire necklace, looked up at the words, a hint of curiosity flashing in her clear blue eyes: "Oh? Mrs. Dolores just said that sapphire complements my eye color better, so why do you think red is better?"
"Although I think you feel that blue suits you very well," Levi said, "I think you personally might prefer red, and what you like is the most important thing."
Elizabeth was suddenly amused by what Levi said.
"Actually, I think blue would suit me better," she blinked her eyes, which were bluer than sapphire, "but I really do prefer this ruby crown. Your intuition is spot on."
She nodded to the driver behind her, who stepped forward, closed the safe containing the ruby crown, and picked it up.

"Um... I'm sorry, I won't be leaving a tip this time," she said with a gentle smile. "Consider it my fault."
"I'll remember you, Li Wei," she said. "I'll look for you again when I come to buy something."
