Chapter 1
The Wizarding World
Bang, bang, bang—the heavy door was filled with loud knocking.
Inside the thatched hut, Green, who was sleeping soundly under a tattered quilt, was instantly awakened. The cold, numb feeling under his feet made him gasp, but Green didn't dare to delay and called out, "Coming!"
Ignoring his feet, which were almost numb from the cold, Green quickly put on his tattered clothes, picked up the leather jacket that he had been using as a second blanket under the old quilt, and opened the wooden door.
A cold winter wind blew, carrying ice shards, and Green's body shuddered from the shock.
Outside the door, old Ham was huddled on the broken wooden cart, holding a whip in one hand and a pipe in the other, smacking his lips. The cart left two tracks in the bumpy snow.
"Hurry up, the road is difficult to travel today, or you'll get scolded."
Old Ham took a deep drag on his pipe and muttered to Green.
"Okay, I understand."
Green closed the wooden door and nimbly boarded the carriage. Everything was as usual. Ever since he took this stable job with Uncle Ham, Green would hear him muttering something every day.
Ham didn't say much. After taking a final puff of his pipe, he cracked his whip hard. The old horse grunted and pulled the cart forward through the bumpy snow.
Green leaned against the broken carriage railing, looked at the dark sky, and continued to close his eyes and doze off. Based on past experience, on snowy days like this, it would take the old carriage at least half an hour's time to reach the Viscount's mansion in the city, by which time it would be almost dawn.
Leaning against the carriage, Green smelled the familiar scent of tobacco and felt deeply grateful to old Ham.
Green's earliest and most primitive memory is of a winter with heavy snowfall. His previous memories are all in darkness, and no one has ever seen Green before. It's as if he popped out of nowhere.
From then on, Green often mingled with a group of orphans in Bisel, living a life of begging until one day, when the old and childless Ham saw Green and was quite moved. Thinking that he had no children of his own, he took Green back with him.
Old Ham chuckled and said, "When I die, these two huts and the old horse are yours."
To be honest, the two country cottages and the old carriage weren't worth much money, but they filled Green with gratitude towards Old Ham, whom he regarded as his second parents.
As for the livelihood that Old Ham and Green made, it was to go to the Viscount's mansion in Bisserl every morning before dawn, clean up the large amount of garbage left behind by the noble lords after a night of revelry, take it outside the city to be cleaned up, and then go to the Viscount's territory to purchase all the supplies for the next night's revelry.
This round trip took almost half a day.
Half an hourglass later, the surface began to become smooth, and a stone path was laid on the ground.
Green, who was dozing in the carriage, woke up naturally without Old Ham's reminder. Knowing that they had arrived in Bisserle and were about to reach the Viscount's mansion, he quickly brushed the snow off his body to tidy himself up.
Although by the time Green and Old Ham arrived at the Viscount's mansion each day, most of the nobles who had been partying all night had already left, and even those who hadn't left wouldn't be given a second glance by the high and mighty noble lords, their appearance was of no use whatsoever.
But the old steward of the Viscount's mansion was a troublesome character who always made things difficult for Green and the other servants, hoping to squeeze some benefits out of them. He had extorted old Ham's silver coins more than once using the low excuse of being unkempt.
The two tall, burly knight guards at the entrance of the Viscount's mansion were exhausted after a night of guarding. They glanced at Old Ham and Green, who had become so familiar with each other over the years that they paid them no heed.
Old Ham gave a forced smile, while Green jumped off the carriage, lowered his head, and entered the Viscount's mansion, not daring to look around too much, heading straight for the luxurious hall that had to be carefully cleaned every day.
Green and Old Ham, who had been listless, suddenly sensed that the atmosphere was different today. They saw the old butler at the entrance of the hall with a gloomy face and a pair of fierce triangular eyes glaring at Green and Old Ham. He trotted over to the two of them.

The old butler hissed, "Wait here, plug your ears, and close your eyes."
"Yes, yes."
Green and Old Ham quickly responded.
A noisy commotion could be faintly heard from inside the main hall. Although it was not very clear, it could be vaguely discerned that it was a girl making a scene.
Instinctively, Green and Old Ham knew that this must be a big shot.
After waiting for almost an hourglass, it was completely light. Green and Old Ham were shivering and stamping their feet in the snow.
The old butler, who had been waiting at the entrance of the hall, walked over with a gloomy expression and said in a low voice, "If you can't stand the cold, you don't need to come tomorrow."
Green and Old Ham's expressions changed. After struggling a few times, Old Ham took out a silver coin from his tattered linen clothes, stuffed it into the old butler's hand, and said with a forced smile, "It's alright, it's alright."
"snort."
The old butler skillfully stuffed the silver coins into his pocket, ignoring the two men, and waited anxiously at the entrance of the hall, glancing inside every now and then.
Green couldn't help but mutter, "Damn it, they just took a bribe from us a few days ago, and now they want more!"
"Oh well, let's just bear with it. Plenty of people want to do our job, and the old butler is just hoping we'll leave."
Old Ham sighed.
As people get older and closer to their graves, they become more accepting of things and no longer have the fiery temper of young people.
Just then, a girl rushed out of the hall. She was dressed in luxurious aristocratic clothes, but her delicate face was covered with tears. She stopped beside Green and Old Ham and shouted into the hall.
"I will never go to Lilith's Hut Wizarding Academy, and I will never become a wizard!"
After saying that, the girl still seemed angry. She pulled out a book and threw it out, then ran out of the Viscount's mansion.
"Rebellion! Rebellion! What are you two standing there for? Go after them right now!"
A pot-bellied nobleman, his face flushed with anger, roared at the two armored knights beside him.
To Green's disbelief, the usually aloof viscount was now standing beside the pot-bellied nobleman with a helpless expression and a forced smile, whispering words of advice.
"Hmph, what does she know? The great wizards are the true rulers of this world. Do you know the price I paid for the test six months from now?"
In a great hurry, the Viscount left the Viscount's mansion with the pot-bellied nobleman, without even glancing at Green and old Ham.
As for the old butler, he also hurriedly followed, taking both gatekeepers with him before disappearing into the snow.
In the blink of an eye, the courtyard became empty and silent.
Seeing that no one was around, Green instinctively reached for the book on the ground in front of him, but Old Ham stepped forward, tapped Green's hand with his pipe, and hissed, "Are you out of your mind?"
Green winced in pain and whispered, "I should be fine, right? If anyone asks, we'll just say we were cleaning up the trash and threw it away. Anyway, it was that noble lady who threw it on the ground."
Old Ham thought for a moment, then looked around to make sure no one was there before nodding, which was considered tacit approval of Green.
Green put the books into his clothes, and then casually followed old Ham to clean the hall. The huge amount of garbage left in the hall after the nobleman's night of revelry was all swept into the carriage.
Until he left, no one asked about the whereabouts of the book, so Green didn't care.
After all, in the past, there were often some treasures mixed in with the garbage that noblemen looked down on but the servants were extremely happy with.
creak creak...
The wagon, loaded with a full load of garbage, slowly left the city of Bisel.
Sitting on the horse-drawn cart loaded with garbage, Green was no longer sleepy. Suddenly, he remembered something and took out the book he had picked up from his pocket.
Frowning, Green, a servant who worked for a nobleman, was generally illiterate. However, because old Ham had been an accounting apprentice in a shop when he was young, he had learned to read, even though the shop later closed down. He had taught Green the skills over the years.
However, Green frowned because the handwriting on the book cover was unfamiliar and not commonly used in daily life.
It took Green a long time to recognize the words.
"The 'Nose Modification and Scent Atlas'? What is that?"
Green stared wide-eyed, thinking it was a biographical novel about a bard, the kind of book that noble ladies and gentlemen loved, but he never expected that the noble lady had just thrown away a book with such a strange title.
and many more!
Suddenly, something occurred to Green, and his eyes widened in disbelief!
Could this be a book by a wizard recording mysterious magic and sorcery?
Wizards have always been a topic that only noble gentlemen are qualified to discuss; ordinary people may never even see a wizard with mysterious whereabouts in their entire lives.
In the eyes of ordinary people, wizards possess mysterious and unpredictable witchcraft, full of evil and mystery. There are often rumors that wizards will carry out large-scale massacres of civilians, eat children's eyes, and use ordinary people for evil witchcraft experiments.
But these wizards were awe-inspiring because they could easily kill civilians and even knights, and possessed extraordinary power.
Even Green had fantasized more than once about how those mysterious and great wizards wielded their mysterious and great powers, and why ordinary people couldn't.
If I become a wizard and master those mysterious and great powers, I won't have to be at the mercy of those noble lords anymore, right?
With an incredulous look on his face, Green quickly flipped through the book "Nose Modification and Scent Atlas" that he had just received, and began to read it word by word. Sometimes when he encountered unfamiliar words, he would think about them carefully or even skip them temporarily.
Slowly, a look of shock began to appear on Green's face, as if a whole new world had been opened up!
Odors are the volatile molecules of different substances in the air that are distinguished by the biological olfactory system. The most pungent odors account for half of the olfactory senses that organisms can distinguish.
According to the "Scent Atlas", normal humans can distinguish between 300 and 400 different scents, while some people with special abilities can distinguish about 600 different scents.
However, this ability to distinguish smells is pitifully low compared to some other organisms!
For example, the baby-crying chicken is a creature that can make sounds like a human baby crying. According to experiments, this creature can distinguish at least 6500 different smells.
For example, the Shadow Butterfly is a magical creature that can only survive by collecting foul smells and can distinguish more than 8200 kinds of odors...
The book mentions that the creature known to be able to detect the most scents in the air is called the Cerberus. This is a powerful creature that many wizards dare not provoke, as it can distinguish 17852 of the known scents that wizards can separate.
The Cerberus's sense of smell is simply incredible!
"Nose Modification" is a book of magical knowledge about how wizards modify their own bodies to mimic the keen sense of smell of certain creatures, achieving a perfect evolution of their sense of smell.
The magical experiments involved many strange materials, and to this day, Green still doesn't understand the word that appears most frequently in the book: cell.
"Green, Green!"
It took Old Ham two shouts before Green snapped out of his reverie over the magic book, hurriedly putting it away and helping Old Ham empty the trash from the carriage.
After emptying all the trash from the carriage, Green followed old Ham and began, as was their custom, to purchase goods from the viscount's territory for the noble lords' consumption that evening.
They were busy until evening when Old Ham and Green finally transported all the goods to the Viscount’s mansion in the city. Then, with a dozen or so copper coins, they hurried back to the countryside. On the carriage, Green was still engrossed in reading the book “Hunter’s Nose Modification and Scent Atlas”.
Old Ham glanced back at Green and sighed, "You rascal, you're really bewitched today. Is this book really that good?"
Green chuckled, saying nothing more, but his heart was filled with longing and awe for this mysterious wizarding world.
Do moving mountain creatures really exist in the world?
A river flowing down from the sky?
And what exactly are those so-called otherworldly realms?
What are the principles behind wizards' mastery of powerful magic and sorcery?
A series of questions flooded Green's mind, but no one could answer them.
"Sigh, you're already seventeen, aren't you? Hmm, next year I'll renovate the house and see if I can find a suitable girl from a nearby family to be your wife. I hope I can see my grandson before I die."
Old Ham muttered to himself.
Green, without looking up, muttered casually, "What nonsense are you talking about? You'll live to be a hundred."
"hehe……"
Old Ham smiled and continued driving the carriage back down the familiar road.
