Chapter 12
The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon
Tony left, but Steve stayed.
"Do you have any other plans tonight? I'm not really comfortable with the atmosphere here. How about we go somewhere else for a few drinks?"
"Sorry, Captain, I have an interview on 'The Tonight Show' tonight," Wu Yanzu replied.
"Talk show?" Steve frowned. "That kind of...entertainment program? Are you sure? They ask some...weird questions."
"I know," Wu Yanzu smiled, "but people have the right to know about their heroes, don't they? Steve, we can't hide behind masks forever."
Steve nodded thoughtfully.
"...Perhaps you are right."
"Ding! Special popularity points gained +2000!"
Wu Yanzu thought to himself: "Getting old popsicle approval is pretty easy."
Soon after attending the charity gala and generously donating $100 million, gaining a huge wave of popularity, she immediately took to the night sky to head to the next show.
He understands the importance of "persona" all too well.
"Fuck..." Tony watched his departing figure, took another swig of champagne, and said, "I hate that guy. I swear, I'll build an Anti-Homelander suit of armor one day and grind that damn smile of his into the ground."
"I'm afraid you'll have to wait in line, Mr. Stark," a cold female voice came from behind him.
Natasha Romanov walked over with a martini in her hand, her gaze fixed on Wu Yanzu's back.
"Oh, look who's here, my dear Naza." Tony raised an eyebrow. "What, you want to 'rub' him too?"
Natasha ignored his lewd remarks and simply said, "Frey's assessment report is out. He... is dangerous. More dangerous than Loki and Hulk combined."
"Danger? No, no, no, he's just a show-off megalomaniac." Tony dismissed it.
"Tony, he's too perfect. And in this world... nothing is 'perfect'."
"Unless," Natasha took a sip of her drink, leaving a mark on the rim of her glass with her red lips, "he was faking it."
……
"...Welcome back! Tonight's guest! Honestly, I never thought I'd get him...Ladies and gentlemen, let's give him a cheer—Homelander!!"
In the Tonight Show studio, the applause and screams almost lifted the roof off.
Accompanied by heavy metal background music and deafening cheers, Wu Yanzu, wearing his never-wearing uniform and sporting a perfect smile, stepped onto the stage of "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon".
"Wow! Wow! Please sit down, please sit down!" Host Jimmy fanned himself dramatically. "My God, Homelander! In my studio! This is insane!"
"Thank you, Jimmy. It's a pleasure to be here." Wu Yanzu sat down gracefully.
"No, no, no, I should be thanking you!" Jimmy exaggeratedly patted his chest. "Seriously, buddy, do you usually dress like this?"
"Well, you could say that." Wu Yanzu gave a shy, boy-next-door smile. "It... is very comfortable. And, you know, it's always ready to 'go to work'."
The audience let out a good-natured chuckle.
"Hahaha! Going to work! I love this!" Jimmy laughed. "You go to work to catch robbers, I go to work to catch guests... So, I want to ask a question that everyone is curious about."
Jimmy leaned closer, feigning mystery.
"You...can you really fly? Or are you like Stark, using thrusters?"
"Well..." Wu Yanzu glanced at the ceiling, and then... in front of all the audience, he slowly... floated up from the sofa.
His feet were half a meter off the ground, and he was suspended in the air.
"!!!!!!!!!"
The studio exploded instantly!
"Oh my god!! He really can fly!!"
"That's so cool!!"
"Ding! You have gained 541 popularity points!"
"Ding! You have gained 632 popularity points!"
"..."
Wu Yanzu landed slowly and shrugged: "Sometimes, this trick works quite well to avoid New York traffic."
The audience burst into laughter again.
"Wow." Jimmy wiped his sweat exaggeratedly. "Homelander. Seriously, you're the first guest I've ever had to 'fly' onto the stage. That's so cool."
"We all know you are Antony Starr. You...you survived that terrible shipwreck and then disappeared for a year. Now, you've returned as a hero...Can you tell us what you went through that year?"
This was a "script" that the Walter PR team had prepared long ago.
Wu Yanzu's face displayed just the right amount of "confusion" and "determination".
"Jimmy... to be honest, there are many things... I can't remember."
"All I remember is the icy seawater, and I thought I was going to die. But... I survived, and I received this 'gift,' or rather... a curse."
He began his "vague narrative" approach.
"It took me a long time to learn to control it. I'm afraid to come back, I'm scared... I'm afraid I'm a monster."
"..."
The studio fell silent, and the camera gave him a close-up.
"Until the Battle of New York," his voice was deep and powerful, "I saw a hole in the sky, I saw people crying. At that moment, I understood."
"The reason I came back is to protect them."
"Wow..." Jimmy was deeply moved by these words.
"You're not a monster, Homelander," Jimmy said emotionally. "You...you're an angel. You're our guardian angel."
"Ding! Popularity points gained +1245!"
"Ding! You have gained 1058 popularity points!"
"Ding! You have gained 1178 popularity points!"
"..."
A "touched" smile appeared on his face at just the right moment.
"Thank you, Jimmy."
The stand-up comedy show was a huge success.
The image of the Patriot as an approachable, humorous, and righteous hero became an overnight sensation across America.
The Vought International hit the nail on the head and immediately arranged the next reality show – visiting children who lost loved ones in the Battle of New York.
He then visited the highlight of this "show"—St. Agnes Children's Hospital.
This place sheltered children injured in the Battle of New York.
The dean excitedly greeted him: "Oh, Mr. Homelander! Your presence is truly... truly a blessing from God!"
"It's what I should do, ma'am," Wu Yanzu said in a magnetic voice.
He walked into the activity room, and the children watched him quietly.
A sense of worship, awe, and a touch of fear in the face of strangers.
Wu Yanzu's gaze swept across the entire room.
Suddenly, he spotted a little girl in a corner.
She was thin and frail, wrapped in a blanket. Although several months had passed, she seemed to still be in the shadow of the incident, tightly hugging a brand-new Homelander action figure.
Wu Yanzu's "movie star radar" was instantly activated.
"That's her."
He knows what to do now.
He slowly, step by step, walked up to the little girl.
He didn't say anything, he just squatted down.
His massive frame was now squatting at the same height as hers.
"What's your name, sweetheart?" His voice was so gentle it could melt ice and snow.
