Chapter 66
Mr. Stark, you don't want to either?
Brooklyn, an old-fashioned boxing gym.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
The dull thud echoed through the empty hall.
Steve Rogers, wearing a sweat-soaked gray T-shirt, was channeling his excess energy into a deformed sandbag.
Each punch was powerful and heavy, each punch carried an indescribable sense of oppression.
"Knock! Knock!" A knocking sound rang out.
"The door's unlocked." Steve didn't turn around, continuing his pounding rhythm. "If it were an insurance salesman, I'd already bought it."
"I'm here to sell a job, Captain," Jessica said as she entered.
Steve stopped moving, steadied the still-swaying sandbag, and turned around.
He looked at Jessica with a gentle smile.
"Jones... oh no, now he's president of Walter, right? I saw the news." Steve picked up a towel and wiped his sweat. "Congratulations on the promotion. But when did Walter start doing door-to-door sales?"
"Anthony isn't here," Jessica said bluntly, not one for mincing words. "He went to Asgard, and I'm in charge of Walter now."
Steve paused, his expression turning concerned: "Asgard? Didn't the news say..."
"The news is for idiots." Jessica walked to the boxing ring and leaned against the ropes. "He fought Thor to help me, and then he was taken away by the Rainbow Bridge."
Steve looked at her, and the keen insight typical of a World War II veteran made him realize the strength Jessica was putting on.
"Do you need help?"
“No, I don’t need it. Walter doesn’t need it.” Jessica stubbornly raised her chin. “But the children do.”
"child?"
"Who's Next Superhero?" Jessica said. "I know you hate that show. I know you think it's making a fool of heroes. But Steve, many of those contestants with superpowers, are sixteen or seventeen-year-olds."
Jessica looked directly into Steve's eyes.
"When Anthony was around, he could keep them in check. He was a bastard, but he was strong enough that those people were afraid of him and obeyed him."
"He's gone now."
"If this program gets out of control, these children will have no one to guide them, no one to tell them what is right and what is wrong..."
Jessica took a deep breath and mimicked what Wu Yanzu had once said.
"...They will become the 'villains' we see in the news. They will lose their way and use their power to hurt others."
"You are Captain America, you are a moral benchmark."
"You can choose to sit at home hitting the punching bag and reminisce about the past. Or..."
Jessica held out her hand and pointed to the door.
"...Or go to that stage and teach those confused bastards what a true hero is."
Steve fell silent.
He looked at Jessica and saw a reflection of himself from years ago, that Brooklyn kid who just wanted to do something for his country.
After a long while, Steve unwrapped the bandages from his hands, revealing a helpless yet warm smile.
"Treasure Heroine... the way you speak is starting to sound more and more like him."
"She was forced into it." Jessica rolled her eyes.
"Okay." Steve draped the towel over his shoulder. "If it's for those young people... I'll join. But I have one condition."
"What?"
"...I don't pronounce GG words."
"make a deal."
……
Having dealt with the most difficult moral exemplars, the remaining challenge is dealing with the most difficult capitalists.
Avengers Tower, Mark's Workshop.
Tony Stark, wearing goggles, was using a welding torch to fine-tune a new Mark armor prototype.
"Sir, we have a guest," Jarvis's voice rang out. "And she didn't make an appointment; she just landed on the tarmac."
"Besides that one-eyed guy, who else is so rude?"
"It's a Vought International helicopter. The visitor is... Ms. Jones. Or, based on the latest intelligence, we should now call her 'Treasure Woman'."
Tony's hand stopped.
"That violent girl?" Tony was a little surprised. "Let her in, I quite like her."
"I'm in, Stark," Jessica's voice rang out directly at the lab door. She walked to the workbench and placed a bottle of 1945 Romanée-Conti on it, which she had taken from Wu Yanzu's wine cabinet.
"A bribe?" Tony glanced at the wine. "Nice taste, but I've seen this in Anthony's wine cabinet. Are you trying to pass off something you don't have?"
"Just tell me if you're going to drink or not."
"Drink." Tony waved his hand, immediately opened a bottle, poured two glasses of wine, and handed one to Jessica. "So, where did that Golden Snitch go? Don't tell me he really went to outer space to save the galaxy."
"He went to Asgard."
"Ha!" Tony laughed. "Going to meet the parents? I knew it! There's a strange tension between him and that big guy Thor. Looks like your position is in jeopardy. When is he coming back?"
"I don't know." Jessica's eyes dimmed for a moment, then returned to their cold, hard state.
Tony's smile faded. He had keenly sensed the shift in Jessica's emotions.
"So, you're at the helm now?" Tony sized her up. "Walt's new queen?"
"It's Treasure Woman," Jessica corrected.
She paused, then continued, "I need you, Tony."
"Cough cough..." Tony almost choked on his drink. "Well... although I'm very charming, I've turned over a new leaf. Pepper will kill me, and Anthony will slice me to pieces with his heat vision when he gets back."
"Shut up, Stark." Jessica rolled her eyes. "I need you to be the mentor for Walter's reality show."
"Come on," Tony said, turning back to continue fiddling with his armor. "I'm Iron Man. I have my own company to run, and I have to clean up S.H.I.E.L.D.'s messes at my own expense. I don't have time to be a mentor on that hype-filled reality show."
"Besides," Tony scoffed, "why should I help Walter make money?"
"Because you're a hero. Anthony said you've always wanted to arm the Earth with steel to fight off alien invasion. But... what if things get out of control?"
Jessica didn't waste words with him and went straight to the point.
"I've seen that top 100 list. Pietro Maximov, so fast he can disable your armor's locking system. And this 'cyborg' covered in tubes, he says he's a mutant, but he's actually injected himself with some kind of unstable toxin, and could go out of control at any moment, turning into a second Abomination."
Jessica lowered her voice.
"...and many of them are wild ability users who are not on the record of S.H.I.E.L.D."
"Without Anthony, nobody can control them. If they get out of control, New York will be the first to suffer."
"Mr. Stark, you don't want to... wait until they've demolished the city before you have to put on your metal suit and go to the rescue, do you?"
Jessica pointed to Tony's chest.
"...Or should you stand before them now and use your irresistible charm and wisdom to show them who's in charge?"
“You can see this as surveillance,” Jessica added. “Or a risk assessment? Call it whatever you want. But as long as you’re on that judging panel, you have the right to decide who advances and who gets kicked out.”
