Chapter 50
Protect the Lens
0.5 seconds.
A solid, diamond-shaped shield, shimmering with pale blue energy lines, appeared prominently in front of her left arm.
"Wow..." Jessica instinctively raised her arm, the shield so light it seemed weightless.
"I spent a lot of money on the vibranium coating, plus the latest energy dispersion field from the Starr Group," Wu Yanzu explained casually. "It can withstand the impact of hundreds of tons of kinetic energy in an instant without breaking your arm."
"Cross your arms," Wu Yanzu commanded.
Jessica did as she was told and crossed her arms in front of her chest.
"Buzz—!"
The two shields instantly closed, forming a huge defensive barrier that protected her from behind.
"Besides being able to withstand ballistic weapons, this thing can make you smash through buildings like a human bulldozer when you're charging in."
Wu Yanzu was very satisfied with the result. He then took out an exquisite metal box from his pocket and tossed it to Jessica.
Jessica caught it and opened it.
Inside lay three test tube syringes emitting a faint green glow.
"What is this?" Jessica held the test tube up to the light and looked at it. "The color looks like radioactive waste."
"T-VEX. I prefer to call it 'Popeye's Spinach Juice'."
Wu Yanzu pointed to the test tube in her hand, "This is for your insurance."
"I don't need insurance," Jessica scoffed. "I can throw a tank into the Hudson River."
Wu Yanzu shook his head. "You haven't encountered real trouble yet, Jessica. This world is far more dangerous than you imagine!"
He stood up, walked up to Jessica, lowered his voice, and an oppressive aura instantly enveloped her.
"This thing can increase your strength dozens of times within ten minutes, and might even inspire some new tricks."
"But remember," Wu Yanzu extended a finger and gently tapped the test tube, "this is your trump card. Don't use it unless absolutely necessary. If you do, you'll be so hungry you'd want to eat a whole cow, and you'll be as weak as a drowning dog."
"Most importantly, if you use more than two in one day, you might die!"
Jessica slipped the box into a hidden compartment in her belt. "I know, I'm not stupid."
"Just who is this criminal? Why is he being treated with such a large force?"
Orville Black. Nickname: "The Bone Chewer".
Wu Yanzu tossed the tablet to her.
The screen displayed a disturbing photograph: a gigantic monster with ashen skin.
"A former underground boxer who gained mysterious powers during an unknown ritual. He possesses incredible strength, hardened skin, and an extremely brutal personality."
"In the past week, he committed a series of crimes in Brooklyn and Queens, killing three police officers who tried to arrest him, and even eating a..." Wu Yanzu paused, "Never mind, you don't need to know what he ate."
"In short, the president gave us this job."
"There's one last thing."
Wu Yanzu pointed to the man carrying a camera who was standing in the corner.
He was a veteran war photographer at Walter, wearing a helmet and covered in GoPros.
"Dave, say hello."
"Hi, Queen Jones! I'm Dave, your number one fan!" Dave waved excitedly.
Wu Yanzu held up a finger and pointed at the camera in Dave's hand.
"I don't care who the criminal is, and I don't care what the police are shouting."
"Jessica, your top priority... is to protect the camera."
“If things get out of control,” Wu Yanzu said, his voice low and close to her face, “…you can injure those police officers, or even yourself. But if Dave dies or the cameras break…and the audience can’t see your heroic figure…”
"...I'll deduct all your bonuses, so that you can only drink cheap whiskey that costs two dollars a bottle for the entire year."
Jessica Jones gritted her teeth in hatred: "You're a complete bastard, Starr."
"Thank you for the compliment." Wu Yanzu flashed a perfect smile. "Go, Queen. This is your debut; I'll see you on television."
……
Abandoned port warehouses in the Bronx.
The sirens ripped through the cold wind.
A dozen police cars and a SWAT armored vehicle surrounded an old warehouse.
"Attention all units, target is heavily armed. Queen Jones will lead the assault, SWAT teams will cover the perimeter."
The voice of the operation commander came through the headset.
Jessica let out a soft sigh of relief as raindrops dripped down her hair.
Behind her, the photographer, Dave, was panting as he adjusted the camera, the red recording light flashing.
"Are you ready, Queen?" Dave asked in a low voice. "Remember, turn your face slightly to the side when you're hitting her; the lighting is better here."
"Shut up, Dave."
Jessica kicked open the heavy iron door with a sudden movement.
"boom--!"
The two iron doors flew in like cannonballs, smashing down a row of shelves.
"Who goes there?!"
"It's that bitch! That Queen Jones!"
Inside the factory, the dozen or so thugs reacted instantly. They weren't holding firearms, but rather modified Chitauri energy rifles, their muzzles glowing with a ghostly blue light.
Damn it.
Jessica instinctively wanted to find cover, but the poor photographer carrying the equipment was right behind her, and if she hid, he'd be riddled with holes.
"This is so troublesome!"
She turned around abruptly, grabbed the terrified photographer Dave, and pulled him behind her.
At the same time, she crossed her arms in front of her chest.
"Buzz—!"
The silver-white arm guards instantly unfolded, and a V-shaped defensive barrier appeared out of thin air, completely obscuring the two of them.
"Fire!!"
"Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!"
High-energy beams of light poured down like a torrential rain.
"Bang bang bang bang bang!"
The energy beam struck the shield, creating ripples, but it couldn't penetrate even a fraction of the barrier.
"Cool..." Dave exclaimed from behind, his camera steady as he perfectly captured Jessica's resolute back and the moment she deployed her shield.
"Have you taken enough pictures?" Jessica asked coldly.
"That's enough! The close-up is perfect!"
"Then hide well, I have to get to work!"
With the shield in place, Jessica pushed off with her feet and charged forward!
They broke through the dense network of fire in an instant.
A burly man wielding a Chitauri war club swung at him from the side.
"Die!!"
Jessica slightly turned to the side, avoiding the tip of the stick.
His right hand, like a venomous snake spitting its tongue, gently rested on the burly man's wrist.
She followed the strong man's strength and pulled backward.
"Go on."
The burly man, weighing 200 pounds, was like an out-of-control kite, spinning three and a half times in the air before crashing heavily into a pile of scrap metal.
"Crack." The sound of a spine breaking was clearly audible.
"Wow!" Dave's camera zoomed in rapidly. "Is this kung fu?! That's so cool!"
"Next!"
