Chapter 36
He actually convinced me.
Wu Yanzu had enjoyed all of this to the fullest. He took Jessica Jones's hand, and with her stiff cooperation, he...
They stepped off the stage and returned to their reserved VIP seats.
The theater lights slowly dimmed.
Before the last glimmer of light disappeared, Wu Yanzu turned to Jessica and whispered in her ear:
"Well done, Your Majesty. Also, you look beautiful tonight."
"..."
Jessica Jones shuddered; she felt her ears burning.
She abruptly shook off his hand.
"...Shut up, you blond bastard," she muttered.
But for some reason, she didn't get up and leave immediately as usual.
She just sat there stiffly, her heart pounding like a drum.
The huge screen lit up.
A huge headline, blazing with flames, caught everyone's eye:
Homelander: Origins
The lights in the movie theater dimmed.
In the main screening room of the TCL Huaxia Grand Theater, only the faint sound of breathing could be heard.
"Fuck."
Jessica Jones sat down next to Wu Yanzu and muttered a curse under her breath.
She was almost suffocated by that white "queen" uniform, and now she's being forced to watch this blond bastard's autobiographical film.
"How did my life get to this point?" she murmured to herself.
"Shh." Azu turned his head, leaned closer, and gestured for her to be quiet. "It's beautiful, darling. This is art."
"Art my ass." Jessica rolled her eyes, grabbed a handful of popcorn, and chewed it angrily.
Not far away, Tony Stark sat with his legs crossed, a nonchalant expression on his face. "Alright, old popsicle," he whispered to Steve beside him, "ready to be baptized by the 'American spirit'? I bet ten dollars there will be a slow-motion American flag within the first five minutes."
Steve Rogers ignored him.
He simply sat up straight, his expression serious.
He wasn't impressed by this Hollywood-style ostentation, but he wanted to believe... to believe that the young man who said "I just did the right thing" on the White House lawn was a real hero.
In the back row of the theater, in an inconspicuous corner, a small, thin figure was trembling with excitement.
He secretly slipped out of Queens and spent all the pocket money he had saved for three months on this damn scalped ticket, just to see him once.
"Wow..."
The giant screen lit up.
"Stal Group Presents"
Produced by Walter Reed Films
The opening.
Hamptons. An extravagant yacht party.
Antony Starr, dressed in flashy swim trunks, held a martini and was surrounded by bikini-clad models.
He was frivolous, wealthy, and empty.
"Ha," Tony Stark chuckled, "Wow, that's pretty good acting! You played me perfectly!"
Then, the storm came... Anthony was battered by the giant waves.
Then, darkness.
The scene shifts to a dark laboratory.
Anthony was strapped to a metal bed, his body covered in tubes.
The villain of the "Chaos" organization is giving a lengthy speech.
"What the hell..." Tony was starting to get impatient. "Couldn't these villains even come up with a different line?"
When the syringe filled with the compound was plunged into Anthony's neck, Wu Yanzu's Oscar-worthy performance, shown on the IMAX screen, stunned everyone's retinas.
His eyes were bloodshot, and veins bulged from his neck to his forehead. He struggled frantically, his handsome face contorted with extreme pain and resentment!
"Aa ...
The inhuman screams pierced through the Dolby sound effects and struck straight to the heart.
"..." Steve Rogers clenched his fists instinctively. The scene of him being injected with serum during World War II flashed through his mind.
Only Tony Stark switched the position of his crossed legs: "Great acting, really. It's a disgrace to the Oscars if this guy doesn't win one."
The movie continues.
Anthony died in torment, and was reborn in chaos.
He feigned submission, and then... retaliated.
When he first broke free from his restraints, and for the first time shot out a burning gaze from his eyes, turning the villain who had tormented him into charcoal...
"Fuck!" Jessica Jones dropped the popcorn bucket she was holding.
She remembered... Kilgrave.
She remembered that night, those two equally ruthless and precise gazes.
Homelander destroyed Chaos's base, and he hovered above the burning ruins, wearing a battle-damaged uniform.
He saved all the hostages who were being tortured by the experiments.
The leader of "Chaos" had half his body burned off; he lay paralyzed on the ground, uttering his final curse upon the Homelanders:
"You saved them... haha... you saved these ants!"
"You think they'll be grateful to you?! They'll just be afraid of you! They'll treat you like a monster!"
"You possess the power of a god! Why... why are you standing with these insects?!"
The veteran actor's performance was impeccable.
The camera focused on Wu Yanzu.
On that face, blackened by gunpowder smoke, there was no anger, only a kind of... almost divine compassion.
He landed slowly and walked up to the villain.
He crouched down and stared directly into those eyes filled with resentment.
His voice, through the theater's surround sound, resonated in every corner, so clear it was as if it were whispering right next to your ear.
"You ask me why?"
He slowly stood up, his back to the camera, the Stars and Stripes cape appearing to burn against the backdrop of the flames.
He looked up at the sky, as if he were looking through the screen and into the soul of every viewer.
"I don't know... I don't know where this power comes from. I only know that I must use it to do the right thing."
"because……"
He turned around, and in the close-up shot, his deep blue eyes held an unwavering belief.
With great power comes great responsibility!
"..."
"..." Steve Rogers sat up abruptly.
His heart was jolted by that line.
He looked at Tony beside him and noticed that Tony, unusually, had also put away his mocking expression.
"With great power comes great responsibility..." Steve repeated softly, looking at the figure on the screen, his doubts completely vanishing.
Tony Stark remained silent.
He didn't speak.
He just... remembered the caves in Afghanistan.
He remembered the man who protected him with his life, Ethan.
Don't waste your life.
"Damn it," Tony muttered under his breath, picked up the Coke beside him, and downed it in one gulp.
That damn blond bastard...
He actually convinced me?
