The soldiers dared to gather and storm the lord's mansion to question him because they knew Alphonse's original character: a complete dissolute who spent his days playing and drinking, far inferior to the former baron.

Alphonse won a duel of honor and demonstrated his strength, but it was not enough to change the soldiers' bad impression of him.

It's just that it's not payday yet, so I'll at least stay until then and see what's going on.

"So, not a single one of you will leave, is that it?" Alphonse sneered. "Who was the first to ask me for evidence? Step forward!"

The soldiers had mixed expressions, but it was clear that none of them wanted to betray their comrades.

But they were unwilling to be the bad guys, yet someone else took on that role.

Captain Simon shouted angrily, "Nick, step forward!"

Having trained together every day, Captain Simon knew the soldiers very well; he could recognize them simply by their voices.

A soldier reluctantly stepped forward from the crowd.

Alphonse said coldly, "I don't care what your reasons were for inciting the soldiers to riot. Coldwind Territory doesn't need someone like you. Get out of my territory!"

The soldier named Nick blushed and stubbornly argued, "I'm only thinking about the brothers' future! You can't fire me like this! I'm right, the lord's manor does indeed have a huge debt. Young master, you said you have a solution, at least show us the evidence so we can serve you with peace of mind. Even if the Baron were still alive, he wouldn't fire me over something like this!"

This time, the soldiers didn't make a fuss, but just whispered among themselves, saying that the old baron was much more merciful and wouldn't give such an order.

Alphonse was extremely annoyed by what he heard, and was about to speak when Mia's voice rang out.

"I've brought your salaries for this month."

With a loud "thump!"

A large cloth bag was thrown to the ground, its mouth wide open, revealing a bag full of silver coins, mixed with some gold coins, though their color wasn't very bright.

"It wasn't payday yet, but since you had questions, I'll pay you today. Young Master is right, the lord's debts have been resolved, and we won't lack military funds in the future," Mia said to the soldiers.

With real gold and silver laid out before them, no one had any more questions, and everyone fell silent.

Nick's expression shifted rapidly, like a dye vat turning from green to white, before he suddenly knelt down on one knee in front of Alphonse and lowered his head.

"Young Master, I know I was wrong. I am willing to accept punishment. Please forgive my sins!"

Alphonse's face was cold and indifferent. "What I said will not change. You get out of Coldwind Territory today."

Seeing their comrade being dismissed, the soldiers couldn't help but feel a sense of shared sorrow, and their eyes filled with sympathy. However, not one of them dared to plead for Nick.

Just then, a person came running over.

Another guard captain, Thompson, arrived.

Upon reaching Alphonse, a panting Thompson immediately stood at attention, stamped his foot, raised his right fist to his chest, paused, and performed a knightly salute.

"Young Master, I'm sorry I'm late!"

After saying that, he turned to the soldiers gathered in front of the castle courtyard and started yelling, "Are you trying to start a rebellion? I was just sick and didn't go to the camp to keep an eye on you, and you dare to cause trouble at the lord's manor? You'll all be punished later! Go back to the camp right now!"

His order was very effective; the soldiers immediately sprang into action and ran towards the camp.

Thompson then kicked Nick, whose face was ashen, causing him to stagger and fall to the ground.

"What are you still kneeling here for? Go back to the barracks!"

"Wait, he incited the soldiers to riot. I have already given the order to expel him from Coldwind Territory," Alphonse interrupted.

I don't believe that old scoundrel Thompson didn't know about this. It's just a coincidence that he happened to be sick today, and the soldiers came to cause trouble? And it's just a coincidence that they came to stop them at this exact moment?

Thompson turned around, a fawning smile plastered on his face. "Young Master, Nick has been fighting alongside the Baron all along. We fought our way from the southern front to the capital, and he deserves credit for that. Could you please forgive him this time?"

"That's no excuse for his mistake!" Alphonse said coldly.

"The young master's orders are not to be questioned, let him go," Mia echoed.

Thompson kicked Nick again, yelling, "You heard everything, now get out of here!"

While his back was to Alphonse and Mia, he quietly gave Nick a wink.

Nick saw this and left dejectedly without pleading any further.

According to Alphonse's guess, this Nick is most likely Thompson's confidant. They have staged a ruse, and they will definitely be involved with each other in the future.

"Captain Thompson, are you sick?"

"Yes, I've been feeling sore all over since yesterday afternoon, and I also have a headache. I told Captain Simon about it, so I'll have to ask him for help with training today."

Thompson did look rather pale, and even his lips had lost their rosy color.

The forgery was quite convincing.

There was nothing wrong with his behavior.

Now is not the time to deal with him; let's wait and see how he behaves for a while longer.

Alphonse smiled kindly. "Then you should go back and get some rest. Captain Simon will take over the guard duties."

"Thank you for your concern, young master. I still need to go to the military camp. The trouble they caused today cannot be left unresolved. I must punish them properly."

"Then go ahead."

After seeing Thompson off, Alphonse turned to Simon and asked, "Were those who caused trouble just Thompson's soldiers?"

Alphonse wasn't entirely without doubts about Captain Simon, after all, his ability to lead troops was far too weak. As the captain of the guard, how could he not be able to control his men? It was bound to raise suspicions.

Could it be that he and Thompson are actually in cahoots, and he's just putting on a loyal front in front of me?

Upon hearing Alphonse's question, Captain Simon quickly replied, "They are all soldiers from Thompson's Guard. He is in charge of the spearmen, and I am in charge of the shield bearers. They are my men, and I can still keep them under control. They are currently in the barracks training."

"Yes." Alphonse nodded.

Pointing to the large cloth bag on the ground, he said, "Captain Simon, I'll trouble you to distribute the soldiers' salaries. You can go back to the camp now."

"Yes, sir!" Captain Simon immediately directed the soldiers behind him to tie up the bags of money and carry them away.

Captain Simon's answer did not completely dispel Alphonse's doubts.

Alphonse had initially thought he was loyal, but today's farce has made him suspicious of him.
