Chapter 100

A Suspicious Nature, A Strange Man's Advice

Chapter 100 A Suspicious Nature, A Strange Man's Advice

In reality, Logan never truly trusted McCain. From the moment he arrived at the farm until now, he has always harbored deep suspicions about McCain.

This is not because McCarthy did not do a good enough job.

His ability to create a safe haven in the current situation and provide food and clothing for the more than 130 mutants inside is enough for Logan to acknowledge McCain's capabilities.

But while recognition is one thing, whether or not to take precautions against it is another.

Logan will do his best to help the shelter if it needs assistance, but he won't undertake tasks that would put him in great danger.

He was naturally suspicious and never easily trusted others over the years. It was precisely because of this personality that he was able to live peacefully for nearly two hundred years.

However, Marcus and his companions were clearly different from Logan; they did not consider the danger of taking the scepter, but instead were disappointed by the failure of their mission.

On the way back, the group was in low spirits and remained silent in the car. Even Klaus, who was usually very talkative, was unusually quiet and would occasionally sigh.

Logan offered a few words of comfort and then said no more; he was currently preoccupied with figuring out how to deal with McCartney.

Before setting off back, Logan informed McCa of the current situation and reported the mission failure.

When McCain received the news, his tone on the phone was terrible; Logan could even sense the unspoken profanity he was about to utter.

Fortunately, he didn't recklessly send Logan and the others to attack the Avengers and reclaim the scepter. Instead, he ordered them to come back quickly, seemingly to wait for them to return for a face-to-face meeting.

They returned to the farm, dusty and tired from the journey, and before they even entered, they bumped into Lorna, who was leading a patrol.

"You're finally back."

Lorna was delighted that they had returned safely and warmly greeted them.

However, due to the mission failure, Marcos and the others were in low spirits, and they simply nodded in response to Lorna's enthusiasm.

Lorna also sensed the awkward atmosphere and looked at Logan with surprise. "Not going well?"

Logan nodded. "The mission failed; we couldn't retrieve the goods."

Lorna wasn't surprised. She had already heard about Logan and his team's defeat. Looking at the dejected group, she sighed and comforted them, "No one can have it all the time. If you fail this time, there's always next time."

Logan took it in stride and nodded.

"Oh, right, McCa said that you should go to his office when you get back. He'll be waiting for you there."

After saying that, she glanced at the patrolling team members behind her, then walked to Logan's side and whispered, "Be careful, McCa seems a bit off."

Logan nodded. "Understood."

After saying that, he led Victor and the others to McCain's office.

At this moment, McCa was sitting at his desk, but because of his inner turmoil, he couldn't concentrate on reading the documents on the desk, which were scattered messily across the surface.

Upon seeing Logan and his group enter, he abruptly stood up, staring at them with bloodshot eyes.

"This mission caused significant losses to the shelter!"

He suppressed his anger, gritted his teeth, and glared at Logan and the others. His voice came out in his throat, and his fist clenched a document tightly, his arm veins bulging.

"Logan, I trusted you, that's why I entrusted you with such an important task, and you've botched it!"

He glared angrily at Logan, his throat trembling, a few curses threatening to spill from his throat, but he swallowed them back down. The fury in his eyes betrayed his disappointment.

Logan was about to speak when Victor, who was standing nearby, couldn't hold back any longer. He suddenly stepped forward and shouted, "What are you angry about? What right do you have to be angry?"

After saying that, he suddenly ripped open his clothes, revealing a horrific wound on his chest that was hard to look at. The hideous wound had not fully healed even now, and there was not a single piece of good flesh left on his chest.

He pointed to his chest and roared, "Did we not try hard enough? Look at this! I almost got blasted to death by that tin cannon!"

"And that big green guy, reinforced concrete trenches are like tofu in front of him, they crumble at the slightest impact. And that Thor guy, one swing of his hammer and he flipped a tank over. You expect us to snatch the cargo back from them?!"

Victor glared angrily at McCain. "You only care about the losses, but do you know how many of us almost died there? We risked our lives for you, and you have the nerve to be angry?!"

Hearing Victor's angry rant, McCa's expression shifted between anger and rage. He gritted his teeth and said, "I know the situation was dangerous, but the failure of this mission will result in a hefty penalty for breach of contract, a huge loss for the shelter!"

Hearing McCain's words, Victor became even angrier. "Fine, since you only care about the losses and not our lives, then come on, you come with me. We'll go straight to Washington, find the Avengers, and steal the goods. I'll show you whether that tin can't's shells are more dangerous, or the breach of contract penalty!"

After saying that, Victor actually tried to pull McCa away.

Logan quickly reached out to stop him, glared at him, and gestured for him to be quiet.

He understood McCain's current mindset perfectly. As someone who aspired to expand the shelter and protect more mutants, what he needed most right now was money. This loss had brought him one step further away from his lifelong dream.

Logan said helplessly, "There's nothing we can do. Those guys hid the goods too well. We just couldn't find them, and we didn't have that much time to search. We really did our best."

"Besides, all sorts of forces are eyeing that thing. Even if we manage to get it, let alone just a few of us, the entire farm will probably be targeted by S.H.I.E.L.D., Hydra, and some other restless forces."

Logan sighed and shook his head, explaining the danger of the Mind Scepter: "That thing is a bomb that could level us at any moment. It's too dangerous to bring it back."

After hearing these words, McCa's expression changed. He looked at Logan and the others with a deep gaze. After a long while, perhaps he thought that he still needed Logan and the others, or perhaps he realized that this was not Logan and the others' responsibility. He slumped back into his chair with a look of disappointment, shaking his head and sighing.

"You're absolutely right."

McCa looked at Logan with a disappointed expression. "This defeat can't be entirely your fault; I also bear some responsibility."

"I didn't expect that thing to be targeted by both S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra at the same time. This is a failure of my intelligence."

After finishing speaking, McCa waved his hand wearily, "I'll handle the aftermath of this. You guys go back and get some rest."

Seeing McCa's expression, Logan shook his head helplessly and led Victor and the others out of the office.

"McCarthy must be very disappointed in us this time."

On his way back to the residential area, Marcus hung his head, shook his head, and sighed. He knew that McCa must be in a terrible mess right now.

"Dude, you're really loyal to him."

Victor snorted, "This was a mistake in his intelligence. If we had known that the Avengers and Hydra valued that thing so much, we could have devised a more thorough plan."

Marcos and the others understood this as well. Although the failure was not their responsibility, they still couldn't be happy, since it concerned the interests of the entire shelter.

Seeing their expressions, Victor was speechless. He spoke again, "Besides, that thing is so dangerous, you saw it yourselves. Almost the entire Avengers were mobilized. If we really bring it back, do you think this shelter can withstand the attack of those lunatics?"

He knew very well that taking that thing would only bring more terrifying danger.

If Hydra's formidable castle was breached, and their sanctuary was truly hiding that thing, the entire Avengers wouldn't need to be mobilized; Hulk's single charge would be enough to destroy the entire farm.

"This is not an excuse."

Klaus turned to Victor and retorted, "Our mission is to bring the goods back. Even if there's danger, I believe McCa can handle it. He never makes a mistake."

"you……"

Victor was speechless. He hadn't expected that these people would worship McCa to this extent. McCa was a Hydra, the Avengers, and S.H.I.E.L.D. How many lives did McCa have to deal with those guys?

Logan tugged at Victor, signaling him to stop talking. He understood the disappointment these people were feeling, and he also understood their blind worship of McCa.

They will now obey McCain's orders unconditionally, something Logan cannot change at the moment.

"Alright, go back and rest for a few days. We can talk again later."

Logan addressed the crowd.

Along the way, everyone remained silent and returned home in silence.

As soon as he entered the house, Victor couldn't help but complain, "These people trust McCa too much, they're practically like his followers."

Logan shook his head. "I can understand. After all, he's the one who feeds them. Without him, ninety percent of the people here would be in the lab or in prison."

McCain created the shelter, giving this group of people a normal environment to live in. For those living in despair, he was like a ray of light, a savior. It's normal for the people in the shelter to respect him.

As he spoke, Logan added, "Perhaps this was just a simple misjudgment."

After saying that, his expression became profound. Looking at the farm outside the window, he murmured, "Perhaps."

At that moment, Caliban pushed Charles out of the room.

They heard Logan and Victor making noise.

Laura came out with them.

Logan checked the time and asked in surprise, "No classes today?"

School usually doesn't let out at this time.

"It's the weekend today."

Charles laughed and said, "You can't expect us to be in the classroom seven days a week. Even if the kids can handle it, this old man of mine can't."

Laura came up and hugged Logan, saying happily, "I came to chat with the professor. He told me a lot of stories about you."

Logan affectionately ruffled the girl's cute little head. "How about I have him explain it to you later? I need to talk to the professor right now."

The girl nodded understandingly, let go of Logan, and ran to the sofa to turn on the TV.

Logan then pushed Charles into the room and closed the door.

"What's wrong? What's the problem?"

Charles looked at Logan's cautious demeanor with some confusion.

Logan didn't say anything, but instead took out two vials of super soldier serum and showed them to Charles.

Looking at the pale blue serum, Charles paused for a moment, then asked in confusion, "What is this?"

"Super Soldier Serum"

Logan explained, "It can enhance a person's physique. It's something that Hydra and S.H.I.E.L.D. are researching. I brought back five of them. I gave three to Victor, and I'm keeping these two for you."

Upon hearing the name of the serum, Charles was taken aback at first, then said with some astonishment, "It's this stuff."

Charles had heard about the secret research program on the Super Soldier Serum before. He knew that this stuff was an extremely valuable asset to any laboratory, but he never expected that Logan would be able to bring back so much.

Logan nodded. "However, this thing is currently only an incomplete version and cannot completely change your condition, but it does have some effect. At least you should not experience the same situation of being lost in space again for a short period of time."

After saying that, he took out a vial of serum and asked, "Would you like to receive the injection now?"

Charles looked at the serum, somewhat hesitant. "It's such a waste to give this to me."

He knew the value of the serum, and now he was just an old man in his twilight years, it was really not appropriate for him to waste such a precious thing.

"You are far more important than this thing."

Logan smiled, then lifted Charles' sleeve, opened the serum, and injected it in.

The pale blue liquid entered Charles's body, but Logan withdrew the syringe after only one-third of it had been injected.

"Let's just inject this much for now. This can't be rushed."

Logan was worried about whether Charles's current body could withstand the flushing with serum, so to be on the safe side, he could only administer small, frequent injections.

The professor nodded in understanding, feeling the vitality that the serum brought to his body.

Although it wasn't much, it gave him a feeling of abundance, and his physical fatigue seemed to have decreased considerably.

Logan carefully put away the serum and hid it under a cabinet in Charles's room, covering it with something. He said, "We can't tell anyone about this. Apart from Victor, no one knows about the serum. We have to keep it a secret, including McCa."

Charles nodded solemnly. "Don't worry, I won't tell."

After a pause, he brought up Logan and his team's mission, saying, "I heard you failed, but I think that's actually a good thing. McCa was too reckless this time."

Logan nodded. "This is indeed very dangerous, and I don't want things to get too complicated."

Charles nodded, then suddenly turned to look outside, his expression softening. "If you have time, spend more time with Laura. She needs companionship at her age. She needs to play with her friends and chat with her family too."

He could tell that the little girl already considered them as family, and she needed their company.

Logan nodded. "I will."

He also liked this girl very much.

After saying that, Logan opened the door and pushed Charles into the living room, where Laura was watching the TV intently.

Logan thought for a moment, then sat down next to Laura and said with a smile, "Kids shouldn't watch TV all the time. The woods nearby have nice scenery; I'd like to go for a walk. Would you like to come with me?"

Upon hearing this, Laura immediately threw down the remote control and said with a delighted expression, "Let's go!"

After saying that, she excitedly pulled Logan up and skipped after him out the door.

It's clear that she's very willing to go out with Logan; the two of them standing together do indeed give off a father-daughter vibe.

Logan led Laura into a nearby forest. The dense jungle was peaceful, with lush green grass growing all around. Occasionally, small squirrels would perch on the branches, looking at them curiously.

A gentle breeze rustled through the trees, creating a soft, refreshing sound as the air was filled with the scent of fresh leaves.

The girl skipped and hopped in front of Logan, sometimes squatting down to tease the butterflies in the flower bushes, sometimes chasing after wild rabbits that suddenly appeared, playing freely on the lush green grass.

Logan strolled behind her, gazing at the girl's innocent and carefree appearance with a kind expression.

"Lola, are you adjusting well to the shelter?"

He asked the girl a question.

Squatting in front of a clump of grass, Laura, who was teasing ants with the grass trails, turned around and said with a smile, "Of course, there are friends here, a TV, and delicious food. Everyone is very happy here, and I love it here."

Logan smiled. Compared to the lab she had been staying in, this place was indeed paradise.

Laura started talking, abandoning the grassy path and running to Logan's side. "And you and the professor are here too. I can chat with you, play with the kids, and see such beautiful scenery. I never want to leave here in my life."

Logan patted the little girl's head and nodded with a smile.

The two relaxed in this beautiful setting, lying on the grass and chatting for a long time.

Whoosh!

Suddenly, the tremors in the trees alerted Logan.

He suddenly stood up and looked in that direction, while shielding Laura behind him.

A blue figure flashed through the woods and disappeared in an instant.

Is it the same weirdo from before?

Logan narrowed his eyes and said with interest, "Lola, come along, I'll take you hunting."

"what?"

Laura was momentarily stunned, but by the time she reacted, Logan had already strode forward.

Seeing this, Laura had no choice but to hurriedly follow.

Two figures, one large and one small, moved through the woods.

Before long, the two caught up with the blue figure running ahead, which was none other than the strange man from before.

But after the strange man ran deep into the forest, he stopped and turned to face Logan.

Laura caught up from behind, brandishing her steel claws and baring her teeth as she lunged forward.

"I have something to tell you."

The strange man spoke calmly.

"Wait."

Logan saw through the strange man's intentions, grabbed Laura's clothes, and stopped her charge.

"I didn't expect you to dare to come back."

He squinted at the strange man. "You'd better have a reason to convince me to let you go."

The strange man nodded, then, as if remembering something, said, "I have something very important to discuss, but I need to confirm first, are you really Wolverine?"

brush.

Logan brandished his steel claws, the gleaming silver claws flashing with a cold light. He stared at the strange man and said, "The real deal."

He could vaguely sense that the strange man seemed to have something very important to say.

The strange man stared at Logan's steel claws, his brow furrowed.

"But my father said that Wolverine is dead."

Hearing this, Logan paused for a moment, then retracted his claws and asked with a furrowed brow, "Who is your father?"

Judging from his tone, the other party's father seemed to know him.

"I can't tell you yet."

The strange man shook his head, not intending to reveal anything.

"Then stop talking nonsense."

Logan said coldly, "Get to the point."

The strange man looked at Logan, thought for a moment, and then said, "Whether you are Wolverine or not, you are clearly a newcomer to the shelter."

As he spoke, his expression suddenly turned very serious, and he solemnly warned, "Remember my words, never believe a single word McCain says!"
