Chapter 49
The Chase and the Favor
Chapter 49 The Chase and the Favor
call…
Logan gasped for breath, his blood-soaked steel claws dripping blood in the darkness, the moonlight reflecting off them and sending shivers of cold light through them.
He turned to look at Jack, instinctively extending his steel claws in the urgency of the situation.
The crisis of wild boars has been resolved, but an even greater crisis may be looming due to the exposure of the steel claws.
Logan looked at Jack beside him, only to see a look of surprise mixed with a hint of joy on his face. "You...you're a mutant?!"
"You know about mutants?"
Logan frowned; in this day and age, mutants were a topic that only a few people would talk about.
"certainly."
Jack looked at Logan's steel claws, his eyes shining. "When I was a kid, I often heard about your deeds."
Logan pondered for a moment, sighed, retracted his steel claws, nodded, glanced at the vast night, and said, "Let's go back first; it's too dangerous here."
No one knows whether the gunshot just now will attract more dangerous people.
Jack nodded repeatedly, but before leaving, he glanced regretfully at the wild boar carcasses scattered on the ground.
These are all good things, but it's too dark now, and dealing with them would be a big problem, so we have to give up.
Upon arriving in town, Logan returned to his hotel room.
The professor was already asleep, and Laura and Caliban were sitting on the sofa watching TV.
As soon as he entered, Caliban noticed the blood on his hands and asked nervously, "What happened? I just heard gunshots. Did those guys catch up with us?"
Laura stared at the blood on Logan's hands with wide, worried eyes.
"fine."
Logan shook his head, went into the bathroom to wash his hands, and said, "We just killed a few wild boars that attacked us."
After washing away the bloodstains, he wiped the water droplets from his hands and said, "We have to get out of here."
Upon hearing this, Caliban quickly looked over. After all, in the life of a fugitive, being able to sleep comfortably in a hotel for one night was a rare treat, and he was not willing to give it up.
"You've gotten into trouble again?"
Caliban couldn't help but ask.
Logan shook his head. "It's a bit complicated to explain. We need to get to Nevada quickly."
As he spoke, he threw the paper towels into the trash can and quickly packed his luggage.
He couldn't be sure whether Jack's reaction when he learned his identity was an act or genuine. After all, there were too many two-faced people like Chris, who might look at you with admiration on the surface but be secretly calling the police.
For safety's sake, he had no choice but to lead Caliban and his men away overnight.
Logan tidied the room, went to wake Charles, turned off Laura's TV, and instructed Caliban behind him, "I'm going down to get the car. You bring the professor and Laura down later."
After giving Logan his instructions, he quickly went downstairs. But as soon as he reached the top of the stairs, he suddenly noticed a lot of light flashing in through the hotel entrance. Several black vans stopped in front of the hotel, and a group of men who looked like they were not to be trifled with walked into the hotel with heavy footsteps.
Logan quickly shrank back and stood against the wall at the top of the stairs.
A rough voice came from the other end of the line. Someone asked Jack at the front desk, "Have you seen a bearded man? He was with an old man and a girl, and an albino patient whose face was pale and sickly."
Logan felt a chill run down his spine as he stood at the bottom of the stairs. Clearly, the group was after him. He carefully clenched his fist, slowly extending his steel claws, his eyes flashing with cold light.
"no."
Jack's decisive answer slightly surprised Logan.
He didn't expect the other party to help him, after all, mutants are now wanted criminals, and the consequences of harboring mutants are also considerable.
"If you don't believe me, you can go up and see for yourselves. Our hotel hasn't had many guests today."
Jack's voice came again, as if those guys didn't believe Jack's previous response.
Logan quickly turned around, ran quietly back to his room, and carefully closed the door.
Caliban, who was packing his things, looked bewildered. "What's wrong?"
"Someone's catching up!"
Logan began to explain, while quickly stuffing all their luggage under the bed, making the room look as if no one had ever been there.
Caliban realized the seriousness of the situation and quickly stepped forward to help.
After restoring the house to its original state, Logan looked around, opened the wardrobe, carried Charles inside, and then said to Laura and Caliban, "You two come in too, and don't make a sound!"
Laura nodded in agreement, and Caliban crawled into the closet, not forgetting to grab a pistol for self-defense.
Fortunately, the wardrobe was big enough to fit three people.
After closing the wardrobe, Logan quickly turned off the light, then leaned against the door, pressed his ear against it, and listened to the sounds outside.
A moment later, footsteps could be heard outside.
Logan crouched warily behind the door, his eyes icy and his fists clenched.
Meanwhile, Jack was leading the way with a large bunch of keys, opening door after door in front of several burly men.
"I already told you, there's no one here."
Jack's impatient voice came through, "We've searched so many places, you should believe me. Do we have to search this one too? Okay, okay, wait, let me look for the key."
Logan heard the rattling of a keychain and knew that Jack was deliberately stalling for time.
Logan quickly ran into the inner room, closed the door, and listened carefully to the sounds outside.
The door was opened, and Jack turned on the lights.
After a brief glance at the living room, the group lost interest in wasting any more time there and turned to check out the next room.
After waiting for more than ten minutes, there was no sound outside at all, and the faint sound of a car starting up could be heard downstairs.
Logan quietly walked to the window, lifted the curtains, and only after confirming that the cars had gone far away did he let the professor and the others come out.
The group sat on the sofa and let out a long sigh of relief.
"Were those Dr. Rice's men just now?"
Logan asked Laura a question.
The girl remained silent, but nodded firmly.
Logan frowned and cursed, "Those guys are really persistent!"
I never expected them to find my whereabouts so quickly; they really have a keen sense of smell.
"We have to get out of here."
Caliban spoke with concern, still shaken by what had just happened. After all, he had little fighting ability, and the ability to chase mutants would make him a lamb to the slaughter.
dong dong dong.
Just then, there was a knock on the door.
The group, who had just relaxed, became alert again. Caliban hurriedly raised his pistol and stared intently at the door.
Logan cautiously walked over and looked through the peephole. Seeing that only Jack was standing outside, he waved to Caliban, signaling him to put down his pistol, and opened the door.
"Don't worry, they're gone."
As soon as the door opened, Jack smiled at Logan.
Logan nodded gratefully. "Thanks."
"You saved my life, this is what I should do."
Jack shook his head, then looked at the people in the room and suddenly smiled, "My wife has cooked a lot of food, and I need your help to finish it off. I wonder if any of you are free?"
Logan understood Jack's good intentions and nodded, saying, "I'd be happy to. I'll talk to them."
He turned to Caliban and his men and explained, "If we leave now, we'll likely run into Dr. Rice's scum. They've already searched this place and shouldn't be back anytime soon. We're safe here."
Caliban hesitated, while Laura remained silent.
Charles, however, smiled and said, "Then let's go have a meal together, I'm actually quite hungry."
