Chapter 60

Reunion at the Border

Chapter 60 Reunion at the Border

Late at night, the car weaved through the woods, the tranquil forest awakened by the bright headlights, and the forest birds fluttered and took flight.

Logan sat in the middle of the back seat. Charles, to his left, had his head resting against the car window and was fast asleep. Laura, to his right, had her head resting on Logan's arm and was also asleep.

The carriage was completely silent, without a sound.

Logan closed his eyes and leaned back in the soft chair, but he didn't fall asleep; the data panel flashed before his eyes.

After that battle, my prestige has increased significantly, now reaching 60 points.

This made Logan realize once again that gaining prestige points from his own kind was indeed much easier.

Although 60 points of prestige were not enough for him to awaken a new ability, Logan felt it wasn't too far off.

The last time I awakened my thermal vision was when my prestige value exceeded the threshold of 10 points.

Even though he didn't know the exact values of these thresholds, he could vaguely sense that the required prestige points shouldn't be too many.

Moreover, he is about to go to a mutant community where there are quite a few mutants. As long as he gains prestige from them, the awakening of new skills will only be a matter of time.

Logan turned his attention away from the Prestige section and looked again at Free Points and Enhancement Points.

The increase in both points is significant this time, with Free Points now at 6 and Enhancement Points at 4.

Without hesitation, Logan immediately added all 4 enhancement points to the self-healing factor.

As his self-healing ability strengthened, Logan vaguely sensed that his injuries had suddenly become much lighter.

He had taken a lot of bullets while dealing with Dr. Rice's group of mercenaries. Although his wounds had begun to heal, the tearing pain was still unbearable.

Now, as the points increase, a feeling of exhilaration suddenly washes over his body, and the agonizing pain finally subsides.

This made him let out a long breath, slowly open his eyes, and his eyes were full of joy.

This battle was well worth it!

It not only solved Dr. Rice's big problem, but also replenished the various points, which can indeed be considered a win-win situation.

After suppressing his joy, Logan focused his attention on the final free points.

After hesitating for a moment, Logan decided to keep his Free Points locked away.

This is a good option for emergencies, but it's best not to use it unless absolutely necessary.

If a strong opponent emerges, these points might have a surprising effect, or even turn the tide of the battle.

Logan put away the panel, glanced at the still dark sky, and was about to close his eyes and rest for a bit.

But then they noticed that the little head on the right shoulder moved.

Laura had woken up at some point and was staring at her with her bright, watery eyes.

Logan peeked out, reached out and ruffled the girl's hair, and whispered, "Sleep a little longer, you'll see your friend when you wake up."

Upon hearing the word "friend," Laura's eyes didn't flash with much joy. She simply nodded and reached out to touch Logan's body. She could feel that beneath the newly changed clothes, there were many bullet holes that hadn't fully healed.

"It's okay, it'll be fine in a couple of days."

Logan gently reassured the girl not to worry about him.

Laura nodded silently, withdrew her hand, and her eyes still showed some heartache.

Logan chuckled and continued to stroke the girl's hair. "Rest now. Once we cross the border, we'll have some peace and quiet for a while."

After saying that, he breathed a deep sigh of relief and turned to look at the deep woods flashing past the window.

Once they are outside the border, the US government's coercion against them will be greatly reduced, and even S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers will not be able to arbitrarily cross the border to arrest them.

At that time, he will be able to relax a bit.

Just as Logan was pondering, a childish voice suddenly rang in his ears: "Logan."

"Um?"

Logan whirled around, looking down at Laura's delicate face, and asked incredulously, "You just spoke?"

He was certain he wasn't hallucinating; there had indeed been a childish voice softly calling his name.

And in the entire carriage, only Laura could make such a sound.

"Um."

Laura nodded, confirming once again that she could speak.

Logan's eyes widened in disbelief; Laura had finally spoken.

He knew the girl was somewhat withdrawn and usually silent to outsiders, even in front of them. When Gabriela left, she simply waved goodbye.

Caliban, in the passenger seat, overheard everything that happened in the back seat. He turned around abruptly, staring at Laura in astonishment. "You can talk?"

He thought Laura had a problem with her voice, since clones often have some physiological issues, like X-24, who was a low-intelligence, bestial wolf.

Hearing Laura speak now made him feel instantly deceived.

Laura ignored Caliban, keeping her eyes fixed on Logan. She reached out and hugged him, resting her head against his chest, and whispered, "Thank you."

Logan was taken aback, realizing that the girl was thanking him for protecting her all the way.

He chuckled and ruffled Laura's hair. "Don't be so polite with me. I promised you and Gabriela that I would bring you to Eden."

Laura suddenly looked up, her big, bright eyes wide with worry, and asked, "Will you leave?"

She knew that this destination was just a meeting point. When the time came, she would cross the border with her other friends and head to Eden in Canada.

If Logan's mission is simply to deliver Gabriela to the meeting point as agreed, then he will have completed his task and they will part ways.

But having been together all this time, she was afraid of being separated from Logan. She didn't know why, but she had already become very dependent on this father she had only known for a few days.

"You don't want me to leave?" Logan saw the fear in the girl's eyes.

Laura nodded seriously. "I hope you can come with me."

Logan chuckled and nodded seriously, saying, "Don't worry, I will always protect you."

He gently ruffled the girl's hair reassuringly.

Having received the promise, Laura finally smiled, leaned on Logan's arm, and closed her eyes in peace.

……

The car drove from night until dawn, then sped from dawn until dusk. After a long journey, the vehicle left the forest and stopped in front of a stretch of Gobi Desert.

"We're here, right here."

Victor unhooked the car and turned it off. The Gobi Desert outside the window marked the location on the coordinates.

Logan took Laura's small hand and got out of the car. Looking at the desolate Gobi Desert, not seeing a single person, he looked down and asked, "Do you know where they are?"

"It should be around here."

Laura, carrying her little backpack, rested her hand on her forehead and looked around.

Kaliban, fully armed and shielding himself from the sun, sniffed the air and then pointed to the top of a cliff in the Gobi Desert. "It should be there."

His ability is to search for mutants; as long as there are mutants alive nearby, he can accurately locate their positions.

The group looked in the direction Caliban pointed and saw a watchtower standing atop the cliff, with several figures faintly visible on it looking down in their direction.

A short while later, a very simple wooden platform was lowered down from the edge of the cliff by a manpower-operated crane, and a girl was standing on the platform.

Laura recognized the girl and excitedly ran over, "Rebecca!"

"Lola, it really is you!"

Rebecca jumped off the platform and hugged Laura with a look of surprise and delight.

"It seems our mission is complete."

Logan smiled as he watched them reunite, and lit a cigarette with a sense of satisfaction.

The smoke rose into the night sky, only to be dispersed by the wind moments later.
