Chapter 32
The Cunning Swindler
Chapter 32 The Cunning Swindler
Hobart felt a previously tense nerve in his body suddenly relax, and his mind felt much lighter as a result.
At the same time, he clearly realized that this was not the digestion of the potion, but only a certain degree of loosening, which should only be a precursor to digestion.
The performance just now was a sudden idea from Hobert, and it only achieved this unexpected effect after receiving feedback from "arbitrator" Hugh.
In an instant, Hobart realized that the cooperation between the "lawyer" and the "arbitrator" was the perfect combination for digesting the potion.
Although Hugh didn't know about "acting techniques," she had been acting as an "arbitrator" for a long time and had already digested the potion, so she didn't realize the process of digesting the potion and naturally wouldn't have had a similar experience to Hobert.
Darkholm, lying on the ground, immediately begged for mercy: "Sir and lady, it was them, those who just ran away, who forced me to do this. Please forgive my rashness! I, I am willing to give you all my possessions to atone for my sins."
Hobart snapped out of his daze and said coldly, "You don't know Zachary's whereabouts, so you're useless to us now. Miss Hugh, I suggest we shoot his left shinbone. His right leg seems to be injured, so we can injure his left leg as well, that way it'll be symmetrical."
"Zachry is my best friend! He told me so many secrets!" Darkholm blurted out in a panic. "Before he left, he said that after this job, he would receive a divine blessing and gain unparalleled power!"
Hobart and Hugh both stopped what they were doing.
Darkholm quickly continued, "Yes, that's what he said. He said his body will undergo a qualitative change, and the next time we meet, he will be a powerhouse I can't even reach."
Hobart and Hugh exchanged a glance. This sounded like a description of becoming an Extraordinary. Did Zachary get the chance to become an Extraordinary after completing that scam?
This means he has an organization behind him. Is Hyman a member of that organization? And Zachary's superior?
Hobert stared into Darkholm's eyes: "You know Hyman, don't you?"
"No, I don't know him! I don't know him!"
Although Hobart's extraordinary abilities did not achieve the desired effect and failed to get Darkholm to reveal information about Hyman, he sensed Darkholm's inner struggle and judged that Darkholm was lying.
Hobart didn't expose him on the spot: "I'm sorry, the information you provided did not satisfy us. Today you must pay the price for everything you just did."
Miss Hugh said enthusiastically, "When it comes to breaking other people's leg bones, I don't think anyone is better at it than me."
Hopper was taken aback, recalling that during the arbitration against Will, they had also threatened to break his legs. He didn't quite understand why Hugh was so keen on breaking other people's legs; was it because he couldn't stand seeing others with longer legs than himself?
Darkholm was still begging for mercy and shouting out some information that he considered valuable, but neither Hobart nor Hugh were interested.
Hugh broke Darkholm's left calf with a single blow of his cane, causing Darkholm to writhe on the ground in pain.
Many residents in the courtyard would quietly open a small crack in their windows or doors, wanting to catch a glimpse of these two heroes who had broken the legs of the local bully, Darkholm.
It's hard to imagine that such a petite woman could have such strength, while the tall man seemed to be watching the show from the sidelines.
The residents were both surprised and relieved by Darkholm's screams, as if they had finally gotten rid of a lot of pent-up frustration.
After the villain received his due punishment, Hobart and Hugh quickly left the yard. Hugh said with some disappointment, "The trail went cold."
Hobart smiled and said, "Not yet."
He glanced around to make sure no one was watching them: "I believe that as long as we keep a close eye on Darkholm, we'll definitely make progress."
Hugh was slightly taken aback, but at this moment when the clues had run out, she was willing to believe Hobart's words.
She looked around, then pointed to a building not far away and said, "We can go up to the roof to keep watch."
"Good idea."
Once they reached the top floor, Hobart witnessed just how agile the "arbitrator" was. Hugh jumped from the top floor and braced himself with his arms to reach the roof.
Hobart, embarrassingly, needed the help of the short Hugh to climb to the roof.
From the rooftop, one could see Darkholm in the courtyard from afar; he had long since stopped screaming. And, somehow, he had stood up on his own and hopped outside into the courtyard, loudly berating his subordinates.
It seems that Darkholm is not as weak as he appears.
After reprimanding his subordinates, Darkholm took the paper and pen they handed him, wrote a few words quickly, and put them in an envelope.
Then he picked a young man from among his subordinates, seemed to give him some instructions, and the young man nodded repeatedly before leaving with the letter.
As Hobart clumsily climbed down from the top floor, he said, "That letter must be the key!"
Hugh roughly understood that Hobert had probably made some discovery and then pretended to leave, allowing Darkholm to expose the mastermind behind him.
Fortunately, the boy wasn't walking very fast, and Hobart and Hugh caught up with him after a few minutes.
The two followed patiently from a distance, and after more than half an hour, the boy finally dropped the letter in his hand into an abandoned mailbox.
We had now left the eastern district and arrived in the suburbs, where factories lined the streets. The air here had a pungent odor, like someone was baking sulfur.
The factory where the mailboxes were located has been abandoned for some unknown reason, leaving only a few mailboxes lying askew in front of the gate.
After the boy left, Hobart and Hugh found a secluded spot to keep an eye on the mailbox. Now, all they had to do was keep an eye on this letter to find out who was behind Darkholm.
Hobert guessed in his mind that the person was very likely Hyman, and even just knowing Hyman's address was a very important clue.
Time passed slowly while waiting, until the sun began to set, when a person wearing a dark trench coat and a hat carefully observed the surroundings before going to the mailbox to retrieve a letter.
The other person's trench coat collar was turned up, and the brim of his hat was very low, so you couldn't see his face at all.
After receiving the letter, he left unhurriedly.
Hobert and Hugh quickly followed, but since the other party was likely an extraordinary being, they still dared not get too close.
After following for two blocks, the other person strolled into a narrow street that could only accommodate two or three people side by side. When Hobert and Hugh arrived at the street corner, they found that the other person had already started running.
Oh no! We've been discovered!
The other party chose a good time to escape; he probably started running as soon as he turned into a narrow street.
By this time, the two sides had created some distance between them, and the other side turned again, disappearing from Hobart and Hugh's sight.
Fortunately, the streets in the factory area were long, and when the two chased each other to a new intersection, the other was still in sight.
There were several workers on the street. One of them, a middle-aged worker in dirty work clothes, walked towards Hobart and Hugh, watching the chase with curious eyes.
Hobert sensed something was wrong, but he couldn't worry about that now. The two of them finally caught up with each other after a lot of effort.
Hugh kicked the other man to the ground from behind, and when he picked them up, he saw a terrified face. Underneath the clean trench coat and hat were tattered work clothes.
Hobert realized something was wrong: "Why are you running?"
"Yes, someone gave me a pound in cash and told me to run like crazy wearing his clothes!"
Hopper immediately thought of the middle-aged worker who had just walked towards him: "I've been tricked!"
