Chapter 37
Exceeding Expectations
Chapter 37 Exceeding Expectations
Hugh paused slightly, already guessing: "You mean, you mean Mr. A is extremely..."
She lowered her voice again: "Are they members of the Aurora Society?"
Hobart nodded: "That's right. I heard that the core members of the Aurora Society all use letters as their code names."
Hugh smiled wryly, "I was planning to take Miss Audrey to the party Mr. A is hosting tomorrow."
"Then you can attend without worry," Hobart said. "Regular gatherings are their way of making money and secretly proselytizing. Not only will they not cause trouble at the gatherings, they will also maintain order."
He breathed a sigh of relief: "That's good."
Hobart then took out the mutated eyeball: "This thing has a wide range of uses, but not many people use it. It's hard to say what price it will fetch, but I estimate it will be between 50 and 100 pounds."
"I happen to know a merchant who sells extraordinary materials, and I think he would be very interested in this."
"Give me four or five days, and we'll split the profits after I've dealt with them."
Hugh nodded: "Okay."
As she spoke, she took out the 23 pounds 6 sulphurs in cash she had just found, and divided it into two equal portions, one for Hobart and one for herself.
When they arrived at 109 Vasque Avenue, it was already completely dark, and a red moon hung in the sky, seemingly watching Hobart and Hugh's actions.
Once the carriage had gone far away and no one was paying attention, the two men broke down the door and entered. One carried a gun and the other a triangular dagger, and they quickly searched the house.
The house has two floors. The first floor has a living room and a kitchen, and the second floor has two bedrooms and a study.
Of course, Hyman was not found here. Since Zachary knew about this place, Hyman would not have hidden here just to be on the safe side.
The two men found a safe in the study on the second floor. Hobart simply went to the basement to get some tools and pried the safe open.
Surprisingly, the safe contained a considerable amount of cash, jewelry, gold, and other valuables.
Hobart gave a simple estimate: "These assets, when added together, should be enough to compensate our clients for their losses."
"Given Hyman's fraudulent activities, I propose that the assets be seized without Hyman's prior notice and divided equally among us, with each of us making restitution to the client. Please, Ms. Arbitrator, arbitrate."
"My arbitration is: execute your recommendation!" Hugh couldn't tell if Hobart was joking or genuinely asking her. She felt like a senile judge, only able to agree with the lawyer's advice, lacking her own judgment.
During the subsequent division of the spoils, Miss Hugh became somewhat frantic. Counting the money was one thing, but determining the value of the jewelry was driving her crazy.
Fortunately, Hobart didn't intend to cheat her and divided the money fairly.
Finding so much valuables here is already considered exceeding the mission target.
Both of them were exhausted by this point, and they agreed to go to the second address they had obtained from Zachary the next day.
However, Hobart analyzed, "This is the southern part of the bridge, and the security is relatively good, which is why Hyman hid some valuables here."
"Gaspin Street is in the East End. If Hyman had any brains, he wouldn't keep anything of value in a den of thieves."
Hugh thought so too: "It's perfect timing to 'visit' Darkholm tomorrow."
The two had already found small boxes to store and divided their belongings. Hobart said, "Miss Hugh, we're in the same boat now, so I need to know your mailing address."
Hugh left his mailing address to Hobart almost without hesitation, after all, they already had enough trust in each other.
The two men each found a horse-drawn carriage and left Vasque Avenue in different directions.
When Hobert got home, he was exhausted and starving. Dinner was long over, but thankfully his foster mother, Monissa, had left him a meal in the kitchen.
After wolfing down his food, Hobart carried his small suitcase back to his room and collapsed into bed.
……
Hugh returned to the apartment he shared with Fors: "I'm so hungry I could eat a whole cow."
Fors was sitting in an armchair reading a magazine. Hugh remembered that Fors had been sitting in an armchair reading a magazine when he left that morning, and in a similar posture.
However, seeing dinner laid out on the table showed that the ravages of hunger had prevented the languid Fors from spending the entire day lounging in her armchair; at least she had visited the kitchen and the bathroom.
Fors put down her magazine and looked at Hugh, who was wolfing down his bread: "Why are you so late today?"
It's already 10 p.m. If it were an ordinary girl, Fors would have been worried by now.
Even with Hugh's agility, Fors was a little worried about his late return, fearing that some fool might get a beating from Hugh.
While eating heartily, Hugh mumbled, "I'll show you something good in a bit!"
A few minutes later, she finally finished the bread in her hand and drank the soup on the table.
Xiu let out a satisfied burp and opened the small box in his hand.
Fors' eyes were immediately dazzled by the jewels and gold in the box: "God of Steam and Machinery! Hugh, you, you robbed a bank today?"
She quickly glanced at the window; thankfully, the curtains had already been drawn.
Hugh laughed proudly, "Following the clues given by my client, Mr. Escob, I traced the mastermind behind the fraud step by step and obtained these valuables from him."
"What a pity, I almost brought the fraudster to justice."
Fors gave Hugh a strange, dark look: "Was someone helping to investigate step by step?"
Hugh was taken aback: "You, how did you know?"
"Because with a brain that only thinks with muscles, you simply can't handle overly complex cases!"
Hugh chuckled awkwardly, "Okay, okay, I did work with someone today."
Then she began to recount her experiences of the day, and Fors felt as if she were listening to a story: "You mean a lawyer who can psychic and knows some extraordinary knowledge that you have absolutely no idea about?"
"That's right, I think he must be an Extraordinary!" Hugh said confidently. "And he must be a member of some organization or a family of Extraordinary individuals, otherwise he couldn't possibly know so much about Extraordinary beings!"
Fors nodded, acknowledging the guess, but then she became a little nervous: "You witnessed the whole murder. To prevent you from reporting him, will he ask his family to kill you to silence you?"
"No way," Hugh said. "I participated back then too."
Fors said, "We still need to be careful." She looked at the small box in front of her. "After all, you took so much money. Even if it's just for these valuables, you have a reason to kill someone."
Hugh wasn't sure anymore, so the two of them changed places to stay that very night.
