Chapter 94
The Viscount's Commission
Chapter 94 The Viscount's Commission
Hobert smiled as he took a sip of red wine at Viscount Grynt's words, but looking at the tidy table, he suddenly thought of the food in cheap coffee shops.
After finishing dessert and fruit, and drinking a few sips of tea, the entire dinner process finally came to an end.
Grelint stood up and said, "I still have many questions I would like to ask about the 'Pharmacist.' Please come with me to the study."
The two entered the study, and Grelint took out his pocket watch, glanced at it, and whispered, "Mr. Hobert, the reason I invited you here is that I have something I'd like to ask you to investigate for me."
Hobert sat opposite the Viscount: "Logically speaking, since we are both founders of the 'Justice League,' I should help. However, your request is too dangerous. I'm sorry, I refuse."
Grynt was taken aback: "I haven't even said what the commission is yet!"
"All I know is that someone was watching us while I was preparing the potion for you." Hobert leaned back in his chair. "I'm just a Sequence 8, and my father doesn't seem to be highly regarded. I don't want to get involved in the struggles between nobles."
Grynt smiled and said, "You're more astute than I thought."
He said, "Let me first explain my request; you can choose not to accept it."
Hobart smiled wryly and said, "Your Excellency, there are some things that I may only know, but that can cause me some trouble."
Grelint said, "Don't worry, no one is eavesdropping on our conversation anymore. The person who was secretly monitoring me left this afternoon after confirming that I had taken the 'Apothecary' potion."
He opened the pocket watch and showed it to Hobart. The watch looked quite old, and it was unclear whether it was broken or not, as the hands were stuck there without moving.
Grynt said, "It's a magical item. As long as I'm being listened to or watched, the hands of the pocket watch will move normally. If no one is listening to, watching, or observing us, the hands will not move at all."
Hobart recalled that Grynt often checked his pocket watch. He used to think the viscount had a strong sense of time, but now he realized that he was checking to see if anyone was watching him.
"Alright," Hobart said, "I'll hear your request first, but you need to explain the risks involved."
"I've been observing you for a while now. You handle extraordinary events with great care and professionalism. I don't think you'll pose any danger to us even if you fail to complete the task." Grynt took a sketch from the drawer:
"The request is actually very simple. I would like to ask you to find one of my father's rings. This is the outline of the ring that I drew this afternoon."
The ring looked quite ordinary, with the words "Gold with a red gemstone" written on it.
Grylls looked at the ring and let out a long sigh: "On my eighteenth birthday, my father told me that the origin and history of the Grylls family were in that ring, along with many valuable documents left by our ancestors."
"My father once said that when I got married, he would let me inherit this ring so that I could continue the family's glory."
"But……"
Grelint said coldly, "But I did not find the ring on my father's body."
His usual warm demeanor vanished without a trace, replaced by a cold and aloof personality, as if he had become a completely different person.
Hobart memorized the ring's shape: "I remember your father passed away from illness, right?"
Greenfield nodded. "That's what they said."
Hobart didn't ask who "they" referred to: "The contents of the ring may have fallen into the hands of the enemy."
"No," said Viscount Grelint. "A spell is needed to open the ring's space, and only my father and I know that spell."
He added, "Furthermore, they did not pass on to me my father's extraordinary qualities."
"That's right, that's right. I'm not completely ignorant about the Extraordinary World. The Grynt family has always been an Extraordinary family."
"But when it came to my generation, because I was an only child and there was a risk of losing control when I took the potion, my father made me take the potion only after I had children, just to be on the safe side."
"But I never expected that my father would pass away 'due to illness' before I got married, and I was also placed under surveillance."
Grylint chuckled coldly, "Only when I take a potion that poses no threat to them will they be completely at ease and give up monitoring me."
These plans and ideas must have been suppressed for a long time, and after Grelint finished speaking, his expression visibly relaxed.
He covered his face and said, "Although I've escaped their surveillance, I may never be able to avenge my father."
Hobart remained a good listener, and as he had said before, he did not want to get involved in the struggles between nobles.
After a long pause, Viscount Grelint finally emerged from his emotions: "As for the risks of this commission, I am not sure, because I do not know whether my father's ring was hidden before his death or was taken by the murderer."
"You need to investigate all of these things. Of course, safety should be the top priority. If you sense any danger, you can choose not to investigate. In short, the choice is yours."
"For me, maintaining the legacy of the Grynt family is of utmost importance, so the family history and those valuable materials must be retrieved."
"This will be a long-term commission, and I am well aware that it may take several years or even more than a decade to see results. From today onwards, I will no longer discuss this matter with you until you have gained something from it."
"As for the compensation, I can only say that it will definitely satisfy you."
Hobert considered for a moment before saying, "Viscount, I must say your caution was the right choice."
He said, "Unless I come across a clear clue, I will wait until I am stronger and have more means of protection before I begin my investigation."
Grylint smiled and said, "Your promise is enough."
Although he had escaped the watcher, Grylint seemed to have developed a habit of performing. When he saw Hobert off, he was still discussing some mystical issues with Hobert with great interest. Even after Hobert got into the carriage, he still seemed to be enjoying himself.
Hobert chuckled in the carriage: "Even nobles have their troubles."
Back home, Hobart heard from the housekeeper that Christine was still in the study, so he knocked on the door and told Christine about his plan to use Upton as bait.
Christine nodded. "Sounds pretty good."
Then he suddenly brought up something else: "I made a very important choice before, and now it's time to pay the price for that choice, which may affect you."
"About six months from now, you should pay attention to every question I ask, and make your choice after careful consideration."
Hobert was taken aback. It seemed that not only were the nobles of Backlund helpless in their fates, but Christine also seemed to have her own difficulties: "Okay, I'll keep an eye on it."
Back in his room, Hobart couldn't fall asleep for a long time. He felt that his conversation with Grelint and Christine that day had been very informative, and he had a feeling that "a storm is brewing."
Around midnight, Hobart finally calmed himself down and went to sleep, planning to read the Bible of Life again the next day.
On Wednesday morning, Hobart went out early again to "visit clients," spent the morning reading scriptures at Harvest Church, and even had lunch there.
Around 2 p.m., Upton entered the church somewhat flustered: "I just put on the 'astrologer's hair' and immediately sensed danger."
