Chapter 36
Spoils of War
Chapter 36 Spoils of War
Once he entered lawyer mode, Hobart immediately felt his spirit come alive again.
He waved the forged contract in his hand and said, "This is the evidence of your fraud. Although the police haven't caught you, and you're unlikely to face legal consequences, I'm still going to prosecute you! To make you understand the charges against you!"
Hugh, who had already begun the search, glanced at Hobart with a strange look. She felt like she understood what Hobart was doing, since she herself enjoyed being an "arbitrator," while Hobart might enjoy being a "lawyer"? But she didn't quite understand.
Hobart's lawsuit continues: "It was your shameless fraud that bankrupted my client and forced him to move to the slums!"
"To atone for your crimes, Ms. 'Arbitrator' and I will confiscate all your assets and your extraordinary characteristics. If we cannot recover the money you swindled, all your assets, including your extraordinary characteristics, will be used to compensate Ms. 'Arbitrator' and our clients, except for necessary processing fees..."
Just then, Zachary's corpse suddenly opened its right eye, and the eyeball with an evil gaze rolled out of its socket.
Zachary is dead, but you can still feel the gaze in that eye.
Clearly, most of the pollution was concentrated in this eyeball, causing it to mutate. It can also be understood as a sealed object with neither very strong functions nor very serious side effects.
Because it was an external force that contaminated Zachary's eyes, it did not affect the integrity of his extraordinary characteristics.
"And your eyes too!" Hobart said. "Your eyes have been confiscated as well! They're being used to compensate me and Miss 'Arbitrator's' clients."
"If the money you swindled is recovered, all of your assets will be used to compensate Miss Hugh and me for the effort and money we spent searching for you, as well as the risks we took in this case."
"Although the mastermind Hyman has not yet received the punishment he deserves, one day I will bring justice to my client, Mr. Robin!"
Hugh gave Hopper a strange look; it was the first time he had ever heard of such a lawsuit, one that even wanted the defendant's eyeballs.
Having completed the lawsuit, Hobart felt that the "lawyer" potion in his body was showing clear signs of being digested.
He immediately realized that being a lawyer doesn't necessarily mean seeking justice for your client in court; a lawyer's value is demonstrated when the defendant pays the price for their lawsuit.
From the moment a client and lawyer enter into a client-lawyer relationship, a kind of spiritual agreement is reached. Therefore, as long as the client fulfills the task beyond expectations, spiritual feedback can be obtained.
Now Hobart has exceeded expectations in fulfilling his commission. The defendant, Zachary, is dead, and all his property will be confiscated. Given the crimes he committed, he did not actually need to be punished so severely.
So the first rule of the lawyer's code is: to exceed expectations in completing a case, regardless of the method or approach.
Hugh over there had already searched the place: "I only found about 20 pounds in cash."
Hobart nodded: "Zakri probably used all the money he swindled to buy potion ingredients."
Generally speaking, the extraordinary traits of Sequence 9 are released very slowly. I don’t know if it’s because of Hobart’s “prosecution” and psychic abilities, but in any case, Zachary’s extraordinary traits were released faster than I expected.
The extraordinary nature of the "Mystic" is like a lump of black paste; approaching it or gazing at it makes one feel as if they can hear many people whispering in their ear.
For the needs of the ritual, Zachary purchased some mystical herbs. Hobart poured the herbs out of two iron boxes, one containing extraordinary substances and the other containing Zachary's mutated eyeball.
After discussing it with Hugh, Hopper set the place on fire to completely destroy the evidence.
Leaving the abandoned factory, Hugh exclaimed, "This is definitely the most exciting thing I've ever done in all my years as an 'arbitrator'."
After this murder and arson, the two men's mutual trust increased significantly.
To avoid attracting the driver's attention, they walked a long distance before hiring a horse-drawn carriage.
Both of them were exhausted, but they couldn't rest yet.
After telling the driver to go to 109 Vasque Avenue, Hobart quietly told Hugh everything he had seen in his psychic readings about Hyman in the carriage.
However, Hobert didn't mention the potion recipe. He didn't intend to sell it; he just wanted to keep it in mind. For example, when he heard that someone was buying ingredients from the recipe, he knew that person was a "Mystic" and very likely someone connected to the Aurora Society.
Because he didn't intend to exchange the formula for monetary compensation, Hobart didn't share it with Hugh.
When Hugh heard that the case was related to the Aurora Society, she said with some concern, "I heard those people are extremists, we..."
Hugh whispered, "We killed their people, won't they retaliate?"
Hobart smiled and said, "Miss Hugh, this is Backlund. All three major churches have 'high sequence' extraordinary individuals stationed here. Believe me, Aurora is more afraid of being exposed than we are."
"And Zachary is clearly an outsider to them, and if I'm not mistaken, the ritual that Hyman told him about is problematic in itself."
"Although Zachary is hateful, he is a tragic figure through and through, and was always manipulated by Hyman."
"As long as we don't investigate the secrets of the Aurora Society, they won't risk exposure to retaliate against us for such insignificant people."
She breathed a sigh of relief; Hobart's words made sense, and she agreed with him.
Hobart added, "We've spent two or three hours searching for and dealing with Zachary, so it's unlikely we'll catch Hyman now."
"However, Hyman must have gone into hiding in a very rushed manner. Hopefully, he left enough valuables in those two residences to compensate our clients for their losses."
Then he took out the two iron boxes: "I know a very reliable gathering of extraordinary people. I can sell them and we'll split the profits."
"Before that, let me estimate their value. A Sequence 9 Extraordinary Ability is generally worth 300 pounds, but few people are willing to take 'Mystic' potions, so an Extraordinary Ability might only sell for 270 to 280 pounds!"
Hugh's eyes lit up; he hadn't expected this lump of paste to be worth so much money!
Wild Beyonders know of the existence of sealed artifacts, and many also know of the existence of Beyond traits, but few know of the "law of the indestructibility of Beyond traits," so they don't have a very concrete concept of sealed artifacts and Beyond traits.
She cleared her throat and said, "Um, I also know a very reliable gathering of extraordinary individuals, shall we go together...?"
"Was this a party organized by Mr. A?" Hobart chuckled when Hugh nodded. "Miss Hugh, if you don't want to suddenly die a horrible death at home, you'd better give up on that idea!"
