Chapter 83
A New Commission
Chapter 83 A New Commission
The entrance to the ruins resembles an underground street, lined with houses and shops on both sides.
For some reason, this complex was not covered by soil and is remarkably well-preserved, as if a giant bubble had appeared underground.
Looking up, you can clearly see the soil and rocks overhead, as well as some tree roots.
Such well-preserved sites usually yield many valuable antiques. Even if no extraordinary items are found in the sites, Jacob's team can still make a fortune just by selling the antiques.
This is also why Jacob was so keen on having Christine join them; such a low-cost, high-return "business" could easily attract the envy of some. Christine's involvement provided them with ample protection; even if Christine never visited the excavation site, Jacob would still give the general a satisfactory share of the profits.
The building that stands at Rex's Message is the largest building in the complex, and it appears to be the residence of a nobleman.
Hopper pointed to the note on the wall: "Why can't you make eye contact with a rabbit?"
"We don't know either," Jacob said with a wry smile. "However, many rabbit holes were indeed found in the ruins, but so far we haven't found anything wrong with the rabbits here."
Hobart then asked, "I remember you saying that two team members have already sacrificed their lives, right?"
"Yes, they were killed while exploring the underground part of this building. We initially thought their deaths were caused by extraordinary creatures..." Jacob explained, "Some extraordinary creatures like to use these ancient ruins as habitats."
He said, "But when we tried to communicate with them, we found that their spirituality seemed incomplete and they were not able to communicate effectively."
"That's when I realized that things might be getting out of our control."
Hobert nodded and followed Jacob to the underground section, which was surprisingly spacious, seemingly larger than the above-ground section.
A pattern resembling a coat of arms appeared on the wall—a black crown. Hobert guessed, "This looks like the coat of arms of the Trensault family?"
"You are a truly learned gentleman," Jacob complimented. "I have consulted experts in this field, and this is indeed the mark of Trensault."
He shook his head and smiled: "But the professors can't understand why the remains of the Trensault family would appear in northern Backlund."
"The tombs and relics of this family are mostly found in the Kingdom of Feneport and the Republic of Intis. The mainstream view in modern times is that the family of the Night Emperor should have originated in the western part of the Northern Continent."
"Backlund is not the main area of activity for the Trensault family. Even if the ruins here really belong to the Trensault family, they shouldn't have left behind any high-level magical items."
Hobart was taken aback. He had forgotten that these once-powerful families of extraordinary beings had long been buried in the dust of history. Few people knew that Trensault and Tudor had once served the Black Emperor Solomon together, and that they had a brief period of joint rule.
Later, under pressure from Solomon's return, Trensault sought help from the Six Gods and, with their assistance, successfully advanced to Sequence 0 Judge, thus splitting the United Government in two.
Before the establishment of the Terensost Empire, most of the Night Emperor's family members should have been in Backlund.
After walking for a few minutes, the group stopped at a fork in the road. Jacques said, "There are unknown dangers ahead. Mr. Doffis, please lead us on our exploration."
Doffies nodded.
Hobart stared at the corridor that led nowhere, its light flickering in the torchlight, as if some monster were lurking in the darkness, watching everyone.
He reminded Dophis: "Perhaps the relationship between the Tudor and the Trensault families is closer than we imagine, and perhaps the Trensault family's power in Backlund during the Fourth Age was also beyond our imagination."
Doffis didn't care whether Hobert understood or not, and said coldly, "They are all extraordinary families who have passed through the 'Lawyer' pathway."
"Perhaps it was an alliance formed due to some external pressure?" Hobert said. "I remember the Kingdom of Rune and the Kingdom of Fennepot were allies for a time, weren't they?"
Doffis gave Hobart a deep look, surprised that Hobart could understand the meaning behind his words. Moreover, Hobart reminded him that for the ruling extraordinary families such as "Lawyers," "Arbitrators," and "Hunters," in addition to the hostile relationship of extraordinary sequences, there are sometimes some political considerations.
For example, the conflict between secular power and divine authority, and the mutual checks and balances between different divine authorities, may cause families of extraordinary rulers to take actions that seem contrary to common sense.
Doffis hummed in agreement, indicating that he understood Hobert's meaning.
Jacob, who was standing to the side, was completely bewildered by their veiled conversation. Although he was quite learned, he could tell that their words seemed to contain advanced knowledge, but he did not understand their specific meaning.
When everyone returned to the camp, it was already lunchtime.
Hobert planned to take a carriage back to Backlund after lunch.
Lunch at the campsite was simple, but it included wild vegetables and rabbit meat, which gave it a unique flavor.
As Hobart finished his meal and was admiring the beautiful scenery around him, Jacob approached him with a man in his thirties: "Mr. Hobart, I've heard you're an undefeated lawyer. Would you be interested in taking on a criminal case?"
Hobart thought to himself: If it were last week, I would definitely be "not interested," but this week I am "interested" because I just got my law license.
As for Jacob's compliment that he was "undefeated," that was the truth, because Hobart had only fought three cases so far. One was a case where Barton gave him practice and he was sure he would win. Another was Sean's case where he found loopholes in the relevant laws. Only Bob's case was quite difficult.
I wonder what Jacob will think when he finds out about his "achievements".
Hobert said politely, "You flatter me. Let me hear about the case first."
Jacob introduced the man in his thirties behind him: "His name is Dai Lun, he is the foreman among the workers. He is having legal troubles and wants to ask for your help."
Hobart asked Dalun to sit opposite him, and after a brief inquiry, Hobart learned that Dalun was helping a friend seek legal assistance.
About two weeks ago, Bill, a friend of Dai Lun, was driving a small boat on the Tasok River when he collided with another boat. Because Bill had been drinking, the owner of the other boat sued him for "drunk driving".
Hobert was very happy, not because Bill had crashed the ship, but because the opportunity to fully digest the potion had arrived!
