Chapter 34

Progress of the Times

Klein found it somewhat amusing to watch Mr. "The Hanged Man" gradually recover.

He wasn't influenced by the "angels." What else can a fortune teller do in the future? Become a charlatan?

At this point, since everyone had nothing else to talk about, they started sharing some information about what was happening around them.

Alger gave Chael a deep look and said:

"Admiral Ludwell has once again embarked on a voyage to explore the eastern waters of Sunia."

This is a pirate gentleman who has transcended vulgar tastes.

Xia Er nodded; this bloodthirsty general was more pleasing to the eye than the one who raped and plundered.

"As far as I know, the Secret Order lost a notebook belonging to the Antigonus family."

"The Fool" also contributed a piece of information.

"A notebook rumored to contain clues to the Antigonus family's treasure?"

"I said this in an exaggerated tone," said Xia Er deliberately.

"I don't know if this notebook contains any treasure, but I'm very curious about the Church of the Night's reaction."

Alger also had an amused expression on his face.

Why did the Church of the Goddess react?

Audrey asked, puzzled.

"Because the Antigonus family was destroyed by the Church of the Night."

Alger smiled and said.

"Should the victor hunt down the loser to the death?"

"I don't quite understand."

Although Xia Er knew the principle of eliminating the root of the problem.

But he was also a student who came from an ivory tower.

In such a transcendent world, he generally does not tend towards complete destruction.

Even if some of the weak and ordinary people escape, they cannot turn the tide.

"If you know the Church of Storms, you'll know that you must treat your enemies with the fierceness of a storm."

Alger chuckled; he hadn't expected the "angel" to be so naive.

The victor is king, the loser is villain; eliminate the root of the problem. Mr. Angel is still too young.

Klein found it somewhat amusing, but he wasn't much more relaxed, because the Church might still need him to find the Antigonus family's notes.

Audrey remained silent, since Chael was referring to the Church of the Night, which was a somewhat sensitive topic.

"Storms are not only fierce; they can also be compassionate."

Shael shook his head, having no intention of continuing the argument with Alger.

In his view, it was a pity that the ancient extraordinary beings were dying out one after another.

Although all the major churches keep some extraordinary beings that are needed for advancement.

But many of the fun and delicious supernatural creatures have gone extinct.

Do you really understand the Church of Storms?

Alger, a member of the Church of Storms, looked at Shael and asked.

This was the first time he had seen someone emphasize that there was another side to the storm.

Who are the true believers in storms?

Can the Church of Storms truly represent "Storm"?

"You can't even represent the Lord of Storms."

"I leaned back in my chair and said softly."

"You'd better not say that in front of the members of the Church of Storms."

"Otherwise, you might be in trouble."

Alger, an unconventional Storm Brother, didn't get angry or upset; instead, he offered advice.

This is, after all, the Tarot Club, and Alger wouldn't argue with other members over such a trivial matter.

"Thank you for reminding me."

"Let me share a message too."

"There are signs of werewolves in the Backlund Bridge area."

Shael casually shared some outdated information.

Perhaps not entirely outdated, the Braveheart Bar is located in the Bridge District. If Sharon and Marich entered the Bridge District because of Jason and Tyrell's evacuation, then his information is accurate; the promoted werewolf was once a werewolf.

"Werewolf?"

Audrey was taken aback, then asked.

"That's not surprising. If you look closely, you'll find that Backlund has everything, like werewolves, vampires, and other things."

Alger remained calm, as he was also aware of the complexity of Backlund.

"Backlund is the most prosperous city in both the north and south continents."

"You can find many things here that you can't find anywhere else."

Alger explained, seeing the astonished look on "Justice's" face.

How come I've never noticed this before? "Justice" Audrey couldn't tell for a moment whether Alger was referring to Backlund, the land she lived in.

Seeing that everyone was silent, Audrey knew it was her turn to share the information. She adjusted her expression and smiled lightly:

"Yesterday my teacher taught me how to faint gracefully and politely in certain situations. Of course, this is just the beginning. What I really want to share is that the King, the Prime Minister, the members of parliament, and all the gentlemen are under tremendous pressure due to the defeat in the war on the east coast of Bayron.

Xia Er gently shook her head and said:

"As long as the Kingdom of Rune is not invaded on its homeland, no one will really care how many people die in the colonies or who they are. What they are probably worried about is the decrease in profits extracted from the colonies each year."

Based on his observations of the various banquets he attended these past few days, Xia Er didn't see any pressure among these people. At most, some of the lesser nobles from the Conservative Party were starting to feel the pinch from the endless stream of expenses.

"Mr. Angel, perhaps you are right, but the defeat in the war affects the people of the entire Kingdom of Rune, not just the nobles. There are also some people who want to do something to change this outcome."

"I've heard some people discuss this, and they feel that the current government structure is too chaotic. Whenever there is a change of political parties, the internal staff will be replaced, which greatly slows down the efficiency of doing things, whether in foreign wars or in serving the people at home."

Audrey recalled the discussions she had overheard at home.

"This electoral system is really too outdated, isn't it?"

"The King and Prime Minister could consider the past administrative system, such as during the Fourth Age, when there was no need for an election process. Instead, noble sons from each family were directly assigned to important positions in their respective territories based on their status among the families."

"Chair said in a cross-dressing manner."

It's not hard to imagine that although the Fourth Age was an era in which imperial and divine power coexisted, the empires were still under a feudal system. After all, the emperors of the Fourth Age cared about faith and mutual respect, and did not care if their nobles became too powerful or rebelled.

After all, those who were capable of rebellion would have already done so, and those who hadn't rebelled wouldn't be able to in the short term. The nobles and their family members also needed their own territory to cultivate their faith.

Anyway, as long as one believes in the emperor, can the emperor not allow other nobles to cultivate their own beliefs?

Those who are extraordinary have enhanced memory, physical strength, thinking ability, and learning ability. They serve as officials in various regions, have their own base, and have family advisory groups. Even at their worst, they are more capable than the current nobles.

That was an era when powerful, extraordinary individuals capable of disrupting social order were all nobles, each possessing fiefdoms.

Each family has its own territory, and wild extraordinary individuals and ordinary people, who cannot even be considered nobles, dare not cause trouble in the territories of these extraordinary families.

This is an offense and provocation against extraordinary families, and it will be punished with blood sacrifice. In some ways, the security is better than it is now, and there are no mystical gangs, because those with some skills are all mystical nobles, and at the very least, they can become knights.

As for the lower classes, there is actually not much change. To some extent, farming on the land of a feudal lord for a lifetime is slightly better than leaving one's homeland to come to Backlund, renting the worst coffin-sized rooms, entering heavily polluted factories without any protection, and working day and night.

At least the mystical aristocracy cares more about faith, population, and the long-term development of their territory than about production.

Xia Er shook his head. It's all about comparing who's worse, there's nothing to compare. The only advantage is that hereditary lords and their subjects, compared to elected mayors and free citizens, have traded their freedom for a dependent relationship.

The former might pay slightly more attention to the dependents.

After all, if the population of one's own territory dies out, and one wants to buy people from other territories, one has to pay a price. It is more worthwhile to let a little bit of people live and continue to generate income and faith.

Mr. Angel, the system you proposed is even more outdated.

Klein grumbled, "The Emperor died too soon, before he could spread more civilization to this world."

Even the worst party elections are still better than the nobility taking the lead without any elections.

The feudal lord system was outdated no matter how you looked at it; ordinary people had no dignity, no human rights, and no way to rise up.

Now at least there are still some upward mobility channels, more freedom, and no sheriffs will burst into your room and whip you to work in the fields.

Dignity and freedom are even more important.

This is the true development of civilization and the progress of the times.

Humans are born with the right to choose freely.

The development of civilization should be a continuous process of breaking down the shackles that bind freedom.

The "fool" looks at the "angel," and every era has its share of thoughts that want to turn back the clock of history. Their vision is limited by the times.

"Mr. Angel, if you experienced life at the bottom of society in the Fourth Age, being driven by stewards or estate managers to work in the fields for noble lords, you probably wouldn't think this way."

Mr. Fool laughed.

"That might be a bit difficult."

The "angel" responded shyly.

"Heh, times have changed. Although nobles still have their own territories, they can only take the profits produced on those territories. This is different from the great nobles who had fiefdoms in the Fourth Era."

"If they were running their own territory, I believe that even if they were stupid, they wouldn't be so casual, and their reaction wouldn't be like a flounder that can't adapt to a new environment and only knows how to blow bubbles."

Alger also made jokes about the nobles.
