Chapter 57
The Psychological Qualities of Justice
"Perhaps it was the greed of some gentlemen, combined with the wisdom of curly-haired baboons."
Alger chuckled twice.
The two men exchanged a glance and then looked away. Audrey asked curiously:
Which blasphemous tablet did Emperor Rosell look at?
"The second one, the first one disappeared long ago."
Chael answered the girl's question.
Alger continued:
"In the Fourth Age, during the First Dynasty of Solomon, the Antigonus and Zarathustra families were prominent noble families, but few records of them remain."
"The Antigonus family's prestige reached its zenith when they supported the establishment of the Tudor dynasty. At that time, ancient names such as Antigonus, Ammon, Abraham, Tamara, and Jacob shone brightly in the history of the Fourth Age. They only fell from their peak when the Blood Emperor fell."
"The Zarathustra family has always been loyal to the Solomon family. After the establishment of the Second Solomon Empire, they remained a prominent noble family, but they did not leave behind many remarkable records. Compared with other ducal families at the time, this family was much more low-key."
"I don't know the specifics. If Mr. Fool wants to know more, I'm afraid the only way is through the Church of the Night or those ancient organizations."
"Which ones are those?" Klein was a little confused. "Why are you talking like I should know all of these things?"
"I do know why the Church of the Night destroyed the Antigonus family."
Xia'er's words brought Klein back to his senses.
"Because the Church of the Night is a church located within the territory of the Kingdom of Trensust."
"Isn't that reason enough?"
"The Church of the Night supports the Night Emperor."
"The Antigonus family supports the Blood Emperor."
That makes sense... but this reason is too...
A history graduate fell into deep thought.
Klein thought about it along the lines of Xia'er and realized that it was indeed true; it would be strange if two forces from different factions didn't have a grudge.
The Church of the Night and the Night Emperor? Could the Church be an original shareholder of the Trensost Dynasty? It seems the Church's dioceses have been within the present-day Loen territory since the Fourth Age?
Is this a new and old feud between the original shareholders of the two dynasties?
"I am very satisfied with your compensation."
Klein nodded; he planned to go back and review his history lessons.
"It's my pleasure."
Alger said modestly.
May the goddess protect you.
Chael casually made a gesture across his chest instead of a bow.
brush!brush!brush!
Three pairs of eyes turned towards us simultaneously.
Klein was startled by Xia'er's words and broke out in a cold sweat. Oh no, has my identity as a follower of the goddess been exposed?
Audrey's beautiful eyes widened. Was Mr. "Angel" also a believer in the goddess?
You're praising the goddess of the night in this setting? Alger couldn't understand; the concept of "angel" was a bit complicated in his mind.
You don't like it?
Shael suddenly realized, and he raised his left fist and punched his chest:
May the storm protect you.
"Mr. Angel, the prayer gesture of the Storm Church is to lightly strike the left chest with the right fist."
Alger's eyelid twitched.
"Mr. Angel, the prayer gesture of the Church of the Night is to tap four times clockwise, not to draw a half circle clockwise."
Audrey realized what was happening and said with a hint of helplessness.
She felt that she was a bit of an incompetent audience member. Was this what Mr. Hanged Man meant when he said that the audience should not be influenced by subjective emotions to make objective observations?
"But I was just blessing you, not praying."
Chael shrugged; he was only praying for others, not for himself.
That scared me to death!
Klein looked at the seemingly innocent "angel" with some anger.
This guy definitely has no faith! He can't even make proper prayer gestures?
"Mr. Angel, this is disrespectful to the goddess."
Audrey frowned slightly, not quite approving of this behavior.
"Can you sing the Night Hymn?"
Can you recite the entire Book of Revelation from memory?
Have you ever volunteered at a free night school run by a church?
"Do you even know what faith is?"
Chael asked a few questions in a calm tone, forcing Miss Justice to drop out of her audience mode.
Alger stared at the "angel" in astonishment. This was someone with faith? That shouldn't be the case...
Klein reflected on himself for a moment: was he a fake night watchman?
But wasn't the "angel" being a bit too harsh on Miss "Justice"?
When Audrey was questioned like this, she momentarily forgot how to refute it. The little princess, who had been pampered since childhood, had seen a lot of things at aristocratic banquets, but the entanglements she encountered were always quite gentlemanly and restrained.
"Don't you understand?"
"It's okay, I don't understand either."
"Since none of us can do it, let's not laugh at each other, okay, Miss Justice?"
Chael intervened just in time; as a spectator, he wouldn't let Audrey cry in embarrassment.
He reached out his hand to the "justice" beside him as if asking for forgiveness.
Miss Justice, who frequently attends various banquets, instinctively chose the quickest way to defuse the awkward situation: she gently placed her hand on the "angel's" hand.
The "angel" gave a perfunctory kiss, and the two were outwardly considered to have reconciled.
"I apologize for taking up so much of your time due to the religious dispute."
"We've made up now, Miss Justice. Don't you still have questions to ask?"
Shael nodded apologetically to "The Fool" and "The Hanged Man," then looked at "Justice."
Klein and Alger watched in silence. If Miss Justice herself believed this was a reconciliation, then they had no reason to interfere. They simply labeled the "angel" as "unstable" in their hearts.
For a fleeting moment, Alger doubted whether the "angels" truly believed in the Lord of Storms.
Was that rational outburst of anger?
The attention from the trio put a lot of pressure on Audrey.
She was clearly still reeling from the embarrassment she had just experienced.
Xia Er tore off a piece of her sleeve, twisted the spiritual energy into a folding fan, and casually handed it to Miss Justice beside her.
This is just a little trick to show off; it's actually not very useful. Only spirits can touch it, and it can't stray too far from Xia'er, otherwise it will dissipate.
Audrey hesitated for a moment, then took the folding fan and opened it to cover half her face. Her pressure immediately lessened.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Angel, I shouldn't have said that to you."
She apologized to the "angel".
Although calling her an "angel" might be more inappropriate, Audrey instead looked for the problem within herself.
The audience adjusted their mindset and began to reflect, and Chael's actions further reduced the hostility.
"It's alright, Miss Justice, I also have some questions."
Chael knew the reason himself.
After he arrived above the gray fog, his mindset became closer to that of the "catastrophe" of the Fourth Age.
Seeing the "angel's" sincere attitude, Audrey smiled and continued to ask:
"Gentlemen, my second question is about the follow-up clues regarding the audience's potion."
"Let me answer that."
"After all, I was the one who led you down this path. Stepping onto this path means you've left your comfort zone. If you want to continue down this path, you'll experience some storms and setbacks."
Alger looked at Audrey meaningfully.
Audrey, who had now returned to being an audience member, realized that "The Hanged Man" referred to the conflict they had just had. If the "angel" didn't apologize or just gave her a perfunctory response, she didn't really have any good solutions. Even Mr. Fool couldn't really help her, since the "angel" hadn't meant to insult her maliciously.
Her mental fortitude is actually quite poor, especially when faced with unexpected cold treatment.
Looking back now, it seems that Mr. "Angel" wasn't targeting her; he just hadn't given her the kind of preferential treatment she usually received.
