Chapter 47
The All-Powerful 'Noblewoman'
Queens, the Maynard family mansion.
Chael saw Mrs. Maynard, dressed in a formal gown, waiting for him.
This is a plump, fair-skinned middle-aged woman, and next to her is an even thinner woman, who is Congressman Maynard's sister.
The young man on the other side is Mrs. Maynard's eldest son.
"Mother, I'm back."
Chael stepped forward and gently hugged Mrs. Maynard; his calling her "Mother" didn't sound too out of place.
He thought what Senior Gray had just said—"Do whatever you want, but don't hurt"—made a lot of sense. He wasn't Amon; he didn't play the horror/scare game.
"You really surprised me."
Mrs. Maynard hugged Chael, her voice filled with surprise and pride as she looked at the Black Night Emblem hanging on Chael's body.
"Bishop Elektra took good care of me, otherwise I wouldn't have graduated early."
There's not much to say about Chael.
Even if he didn't apply for graduation early, he would just be wasting his time attending classes. The seminary trains devout clergy, not outstanding scientists.
"Honey, go change your clothes first, the banquet will start soon."
Mrs. Maynard said.
"No need, I'll just wear the clergy's robe."
Xia Er shook his head. His identity as a member of the Church of the Night could shield him from a lot of trouble. For example, the church rules prohibited alcoholism and the consumption of distilled spirits. He could only drink small amounts of champagne and red and white wine.
He thought it was good; he didn't really like beer.
Chael can use the banner of the Goddess of the Night to refuse many things she doesn't like, so from this perspective, faith isn't without its advantages.
"That's settled then."
"Go and make preparations. When you attend the banquet later, you should put 'The Night's Revelation' back in your room."
"Your room is always cleaned by a maid."
Mrs. Maynard looked at the book her youngest son was holding in his arms and said.
Chael nodded, greeted his aunt and brother beside him, and led Martin to his room.
"This child is much more mature than before."
"He is now a full-fledged clergyman, so of course he can't live like before. It would be great if he were willing to move back in this time."
As Xia Er walked up the stairs, he still heard the murmurs downstairs. He calmly returned to his room on the second floor, straightened his clothes, and his eyes remained expressionless.
......
evening.
A line of luxurious carriages were parked in front of the villa.
Chael joined his elder brother in entertaining the many guests who came to visit. Mrs. Maynard sent out invitations to many people, mainly the New Party.
"Mrs. Catherine, welcome."
He gave a standard bow to the noblewoman in front of him. This lady looked like a mature version of Audrey, more elegant and more beautiful. The only flaw was the faint lines left by time at the corners of her eyes. Even with careful makeup, some traces could still be seen.
"My mother will be overjoyed by your arrival."
"Welcome, Miss Audrey."
Xia Er naturally looked at the blonde girl who was holding Lady Catherine's arm.
With her beautiful long golden hair, jewel-like blue eyes, noble and elegant demeanor, expensive yet understated jewelry, and gorgeous light green dress, the young woman seemed to reflect a radiance that rivaled even the Mediterranean Sea under the lights.
Chael glanced at his older brother beside him. So he was watching too? Since everyone was watching, his behavior wasn't too out of place. But didn't you think Lady Catherine had more class? Audrey wasn't even an adult yet.
He looked at Audrey and found that the girl was also looking at him with bright, blinking eyes.
What threat could such a small audience pose?
Chael nodded politely and looked away.
After seeing the golden retriever that the maid Anne was leading, he squatted down and petted it a couple of times. After getting Anne's permission, he fed Susie two slices of ham.
After all the guests had entered, Mrs. Maynard raised her glass to the assembled guests and said:
"Let's raise a toast to tonight's star!"
Many guests at the banquet raised their glasses and looked at Xia Er, but this did not affect Xia Er's mood. He appropriately revealed a slightly shy and secretly pleased smile:
"Welcome to this banquet."
"I also want to share this joy with you. Let us praise the goddess together and wish that she would bless every guest tonight and make their dreams come true."
Chael drew a crimson moon on his chest, even though he remembered that the goddess of the night was the goddess of nightmares.
"Praise beauties, goddess." ×N
The other guests also tapped their chests four times to draw a crimson moon.
Given this environment, Xia Er had some doubts. If he hadn't been a time traveler, if he had studied at a seminary from a young age and worked in a church as an adult, how devout would his faith in the Goddess of the Night have been?
Even among the nobles present, Xia Er could tell that most of them were very devout in their faith in the Goddess of Night, especially the ladies and young women.
After the pleasantries, the opening dance began.
Chael walked toward Audrey Hall. Among all these noble ladies, he was most familiar with Miss Justice, though it was only a one-sided familiarity.
"Miss Audrey, may I invite you to dance?"
Chael bowed with perfect form.
He also decided that he would not return to Queens, nor go to the North Side, and that he would be more free to live alone in the West Side.
"It's my pleasure."
Audrey glanced at the young master of the Maynard family. He had dark brown hair, light blue eyes, and a sickly pale complexion, but he didn't look sickly. He also had faint dark circles under his eyes, probably because he hadn't slept well last night.
She extended her palm, not wanting to be disappointed.
If the blonde girl knew what Chael said about her in front of Martin, she would definitely be very indignant.
As Chaer led Audrey towards the dance floor, he noticed someone watching him from the shadows. He turned around and saw a large, seemingly innocent-looking golden retriever.
The dog's face held a human-like innocence.
He smiled at Audrey and said:
"Miss Audrey, your pet is very cute."
Susie?
Audrey was startled, but politely thanked Chael for the compliment.
As the music played, Xia Er began to move his feet to follow the melody. He wasn't without experience; he was also quite good at singing and dancing.
"Miss Audrey, it seems very spiritual, reminding me of my unfortunate late Bruce. I wonder if you have any thoughts about giving it away? If so, I will reciprocate with a gift of 'equal' value."
Chael attempts to abduct this imaginary dog of the future.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Maynard, Susie is my friend, and I don't have that idea at the moment."
Audrey maintained her politeness, but she was starting to feel uneasy. Why did this gentleman keep bringing up Susie?
When Audrey thought about Chael's official background in the Church of the Night, she felt a little scared of herself. If it weren't for the muscle memory from years of dancing and Chael's attention, she might have made a small fool of herself.
"I used to have a hunting dog, but it got sick and I buried it myself."
"Miss Audrey, please take good care of your health. The smog in Backlund has been getting worse lately, which is not only harmful to pets with a keen sense of smell, but will also have a negative impact on your health."
Xia'er spoke words of concern, but he could feel that the little hand he was holding was a little nervous. He didn't know what she was thinking, but he found it quite interesting.
"You are such a considerate gentleman."
Audrey maintained a polite smile, treating it as just a casual greeting.
"In fact, if I weren't worried about being seen as an oddball, I would really like to wear a mask when I go out."
"Of course, the workers are the ones who need masks more than I do."
"Although their boss has no intention of providing them with masks."
When Xia Er talked about face masks, he thought of those three years he had gone through. He still had several boxes of face masks at home that he hadn't opened yet.
"This is truly a regrettable thing."
"I think the gentlemen in the cabinet will soon take notice of this issue."
Audrey also felt that masks were very useful, but clearly, her upbringing did not allow her to attend banquets or wear masks when going out.
"Then they have a lot of issues to pay attention to."
Chael paid no heed to Audrey's comforting words.
He thought that perhaps he could open a factory to produce face masks.
After Jason the Living Dead and Tyrell the Werewolf took over the Huiley Party, the girls who needed a job to support themselves had another option.
This is at least more profitable than sticking matchboxes together.
It's just a small favor anyway.
"Mr. Maynard, have you heard?"
As Chaer pondered the details, Audrey asked in a way that piqued curiosity.
"What did you hear?"
Xia Er looked at the blonde girl who was slightly shorter than him and asked.
"I overheard many ladies gathered together talking about a way they came up with to alleviate the problem of declining efficiency in government departments due to elections in the kingdom."
Audrey said it as if it were nothing out of the ordinary.
Did you hear it from someone else? Or did you tell them?
"Yeah?"
"What brilliant idea did they come up with?"
Chael displayed just the right amount of curiosity and distrust.
"By holding standardized government employee examinations...we can address the problem of administrative inefficiency."
Audrey smiled confidently and said.
"That's a great idea!"
"The gentlemen in the cabinet are always good at turning exams into a playground for the aristocracy. Now, hiring uniform employees to serve the government will also save them some trouble."
"The person who came up with this idea and was happy to share it must be a beautiful, kind-hearted, visionary, and wise noblewoman."
Xia Er praised with some 'amazement'.
He looked at Audrey with a "what do you think?" gaze, waiting for her approval.
"Haha, she is indeed very visionary and insightful."
Audrey felt a little awkward under Chael's gaze. After silently apologizing to Mr. Fool in her heart, she offered a compliment, avoiding the main point.
Chaer chuckled softly and took Audrey's hand, beginning a graceful dance.
As the music continued, their dance ended, and according to etiquette, he customarily inquired:
"Do you need me to take you back? Or is there something else you're thinking?"
"Just send me back to where I was."
Audrey smiled reservedly, still wanting to return to her original spot and continue playing the role of an audience member.
Although observing this gentleman was also interesting, she decided to let him go for now, as he seemed a bit tired.
Although the gentleman's reaction was natural, Audrey could detect a subtle sense of incongruity, as if he had suddenly stepped from the racetrack into a banquet hall without even having time to change his clothes, and was now trying his best to maintain etiquette.
He seemed to adapt well to the environment and wasn't particularly resistant to it, but some subtle actions suggested that he was still just going through the motions; he hadn't truly transitioned from the atmosphere of the racetrack back to his real life.
Is this a Church Extraordinary Person who has just dealt with a supernatural event?
Audrey wasn't sure if her observations were correct, so she decided to find other targets to continue training with.
