Chapter 38
Divination Lesson
Chapter 38 Divination Lesson
"The painless cutting spell? Is this it?"
After class, on the path back to the castle, Ivy asked questions while raising her wand.
"Diffnindo!"
An orange beam of light shot from the tip of the wand, instantly severing the scattered branches in the lawn.
"This is the most original version of the cutting spell. It does not have a pain-free effect. I think the pain-free cutting spell is a new spell derived from it, but we still need to verify what it is."
Ian added immediately after seeing his roommate cast a spell.
In his past life, he loved small animals very much. If he let his roommate use this original version of the cutting spell to cut off the tail, it would be tantamount to abusing a swallowtail dog.
Andrei, usually so carefree, surprisingly spoke with a hint of seriousness:
"Yes, we're helping it, not abusing it. I remember this kind of spell is usually only used at St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Injuries, where the healers use it more often. Perhaps we can go to the university hospital and ask Mrs. Pomfrey."
Andrei's suggestion was unanimously approved, so he gloriously took on the task of going to the school hospital to find out how to cast the painless cutting spell.
After making the arrangement, the group quickened their pace and returned to the castle, as a divination lesson awaited them in half an hour.
……
The top floor of the North Tower of Hogwarts Castle is the classroom for Divination, and also Professor Trelawney's residence.
After navigating the dazzling spiral staircases, the group climbed a silver ladder, and after several twists and turns, finally reached their destination.
Their first impression of this place was not that of a classroom, but rather a combination of an attic and an old-fashioned teahouse.
The room was filled with small round tables and various divination supplies. The lights in the classroom were covered with dark red lampshades, and the curtains were almost all drawn.
The fire in the fireplace emitted a dull, greasy smell; in short, everything here was depressing.
"This is a rather strange classroom."
This is the most honest evaluation Andrei gave.
"Anyway, let's find a place to sit down first, class starts in less than 10 minutes."
As Ian spoke, he walked to the back of the classroom, to a small round table near the window.
Since there were enough tables, the group didn't squeeze together and each chose a seat they liked.
A few minutes later, many students who had chosen the divination course arrived one after another. Perhaps the classroom was too oppressive, because no one was in the mood to chat and just sat quietly waiting for class to begin.
A while had passed since class started, and everyone was beginning to wonder if they had remembered the class time wrong when a hoarse and muffled voice came from the doorway.
"Um, I'm sorry, I wasted some time in my field of vision. So much so that I forgot about this divination lesson in the physical world..."
A middle-aged woman with a unique appearance slowly walked into the classroom; her first impression was that of a shimmering insect.
Her slender body was draped in a thin, transparent shawl adorned with many shimmering metallic sequins. Countless beads of various colors hung from her long, thin neck, and her arms and hands were also covered with bracelets and rings.
The most exaggerated thing was her thick, flower-shaped glasses, which made her already large eyes look several times bigger.
"I felt like she had overslept after a hangover; you could smell the alcohol on her."
Ivy complained from the side, and her voice was just right so that all the students in the classroom could hear her.
Professor Trelawney remained unfazed, as if she hadn't heard a thing, and continued calmly:
"Today's lesson is card divination. You can put your books aside for now. Divination is a profound art, and for those who have no talent for it, taking a divination class is of no use whatsoever; it would just be a waste of time."
After she finished speaking, she didn't forget to stare at Ivydo a few more times, her underlying meaning perfectly conveyed.
"...Cards are also a form of divination. Today we'll be learning about the Minor Arcana, which can provide more specific predictions about what a person will encounter. The fifty-six cards come in four suits: Wands, Cups, Swords, Pentacles..."
As Professor Trelawney spoke, she shuffled the cards and laid them out on the small round table. She seemingly randomly drew one, then held up the card in her hand and asked:
"Can anyone tell me what this is?"
Despite her various unreliable behaviors, answering questions in class was ingrained in the young eagles' bones, and after a slight hesitation, many Ravenclaw students still chose to raise their hands.
"It's the Queen of Wands." A lucky Ravenclaw got the chance to answer.
"Very good, Ravenclaw gets a point."
"So, Professor, what does this mean?" someone suddenly asked.
"Ah, this is an upright card, symbolizing a compassionate, understanding, friendly, affectionate, pure, chaste, charming, and elegant lady."
Professor Trelawney smiled and narrowed her eyes.
"Now, shuffle the cards as I just did, and then each of you draw one card. We will take turns interpreting and learning them."
Upon hearing this, the young wizards quickly piled up cards on the table and carefully drew them from among them.
This was Ian's first time encountering something like this. He picked out a card as usual and found it to be the "Chancellor of the Holy Grail". Although he didn't know what it meant, he still chose to look it up in the book out of curiosity.
Diligent and studious, focused and dedicated, loyal, thoughtful, and contemplative.
Surprisingly, it was a pretty good card, but Ian didn't really believe in this kind of divination.
In his previous life, he had also studied the I Ching for a period of time. This ancient Eastern divination is more real and magical, as it is based on the fundamental laws of the universe.
Just then, a shrill voice rang out.
"Oh no! God, how pitiful, King of Pentacles, corrupt, wicked, greedy, irresponsible, betraying, killing, dying..."
Hearing the sound, Ian looked over curiously, wanting to see who was so unlucky. As expected, he saw Ivy... At that moment, Professor Trelawney was making exaggerated interpretations beside him.
"Professor, my card is the upright King of Pentacles, but you interpreted it as reversed!" Ivy looked at the unreliable professor with a speechless expression.
"Oh, no, no, you don't understand divination. Fate is constantly changing. When you showed it to me, it was already reversed, so... poor child."
Ivy: "..."
However, at this point, Ian actually agreed more with Professor Trelawney's statement. This is very close to the central idea of the I Ching, and it is also the "changing hexagram" in the I Ching divination, which represents repetition, coming and going, circulation, advancement and retreat, and waxing and waning.
Future changes can be predicted, but they will still change even after prediction.
The rest of the time was spent on Professor Trelawney's interpretations. Most of the students were forced to have their interpretations reversed, resulting in various tragic outcomes... A small number of obedient students, like Ian, who seemed to please her, were given upright interpretations.
The class ended in this farcical and absurd atmosphere.
"Hey buddy, don't overthink it. I think I see through her; she's a fraud. But the good thing is, we'll get good grades on our exams much easier from now on."
After class, Andrei looked at the somewhat depressed Ivy and didn't forget to comfort his friend beside him.
Ian added, "Yes, there are very few true prophets who can see into the future, and clearly our divination professor is not one."
