Chapter 4
: Can people die in big cities?
Hearing a woman's scream coming from not far away, Conan Edogawa's expression changed, and he rushed over like a stray dog whose tail had been stepped on.
But Conan Edogawa, who was sprinting toward the screaming spot, caught a glimpse of a figure even faster than himself out of the corner of his eye. He instinctively turned his head to look and saw Jonah pass by him in an instant.
Unaware that Conan Edogawa was in surprise, Jonah suddenly remembered that Kogoro Mouri seemed to have just walked towards the spot where the scream had come from. Not knowing what had happened, Jonah wanted to check on Kogoro Mouri's safety as soon as possible.
"Jonah? What are you doing here?"
Standing at the entrance to the mansion's reception room, Kogoro Mouri frowned as he looked at his employer, Denjiro Maru, who had parted ways with him earlier and was later found dead in the reception room.
Seeing Maru Denjiro covered in blood and pinned to a pillar in the room with a samurai sword, Kogoro Mori instinctively wanted to stand in front of Jonah to cover him up, not wanting the child to see this scene.
After all, not every child is like that strange brat Conan Edogawa, who reacts so naturally to crime scenes and victims... Hmm?
He paused for a moment, watching Jonah's gaze sweep over him. After confirming that he was alright, he calmly turned his gaze to the corpse inside. Without the slightest fluctuation in his eyes, Kogoro Mouri clicked his tongue.
He forgot that this kid in front of him had been a child soldier; he had not only watched over dead people, but had also killed people with his own hands.
"Don't come in and disturb the scene. Just wait quietly to the side. Xiaolan, hurry up and call the police."
Jonah stood obediently to the side, not doing anything extra, just watching curiously as Kogoro Mouri and Conan Edogawa investigated something at the crime scene, one openly and honestly, the other furtively.
Jonah was somewhat surprised to suddenly see a dead body. Could it be that people could die so tragically even in a place without war?
Moreover, Jonah was surprised to learn that detectives' work involves dealing with deaths, whereas he had initially thought detectives only needed to help people find their pets or investigate infidelity in couples.
Is being a detective really such a dangerous job?
Although his expression remained calm, Jonah's eyes gradually grew serious.
Jonah doesn't know much about detective work, but he knows one thing for sure: both Kogoro Mouri and Conan Edogawa want to catch the person who killed Denjiro Maru.
Jonah knew even better that dealing with a murderer was always a very dangerous thing. Once you'd killed someone once and crossed that mental hurdle, you wouldn't feel any psychological pressure when you took action against others.
"Sister Xiaolan, why did Uncle say he would definitely find the murderer? Shouldn't the murderer run away after killing someone?"
Seeing Kogoro Mouri discussing the crime scene with the police, Jonah reached out and tugged at Ran Mouri's sleeve, asking the question he was curious about.
"It's true that some people will run away out of fear, but others will think they're smart enough to hide from the police and detectives and clear their names."
With a slight bow, Ran Mouri, having witnessed many grand occasions alongside her father and childhood friend, was able to smile at Jonah again despite her initial panic.
"Is Jonah curious about the investigation process?"
"No."
"Well, okay, let's wait here for a while. I'm sure Dad and the others will be done soon."
Ran reached out and ruffled Jonah's hair. Looking at Jonah's expressionless and adorable appearance without resistance, Ran felt a mix of emotions.
Ran Mouri has grown quite fond of her younger brother Jonah after spending time together. However, just like Kogoro Mouri, she witnessed Jonah's indifference towards the corpse at the crime scene, which left Ran feeling uneasy.
Jonah is so cute and obedient, why did he have to go through such terrible things? It's just too much!
Jonah wasn't really interested in solving the case, but he had nothing else to do but stand aside and observe the changes at the scene. However, the more he looked, the more confused Jonah's not-so-bright little brain became.
Jonah glanced at Kogoro Mouri and Juzo Inspector Megure, whose investigation had stalled and who hadn't gotten any results from questioning the suspects who had arrived later. He then looked at Conan Edogawa, who was running around the scene making discoveries and even borrowing a Polaroid camera from someone at the mansion to take pictures of the badly scratched cabinet before hiding to the side and pretending to cut up the photos with a knife. Jonah was somewhat bewildered.
Am I imagining things? It seems like only Conan Edogawa, the youngest kid, is doing anything useful right now.
However, Conan Edogawa is indeed very smart. During this time at the detective agency, Conan Edogawa taught me the most knowledge, and he also spoke the best English.
In Jonah's mind, Conan Edogawa is the kind of child prodigy that everyone talks about.
Jonah was idly observing Conan Edogawa's actions, unaware that Conan Edogawa was also observing Jonah.
By altering the drawer's position using the photographs he possessed, Conan Edogawa obtained evidence, connecting all the previously suspicious locations and confirming the culprit's identity.
However, Conan Edogawa was embarrassed to discover that he had no way to knock out Kogoro Mouri with his watch-type tranquilizer gun.
In previous deductions, Conan Edogawa and Kogoro Mouri acted together, with Jonah not following. Therefore, Conan Edogawa could easily knock out Kogoro Mouri if he was a little careful.
However, Conan Edogawa is not confident that he can take this action under Jonah's watchful eye. The time they have spent together has given Conan Edogawa a thorough understanding of Jonah.
This boy, a former child soldier, possessed such keen observation skills and sensitivity to his surroundings that even Conan Edogawa was astonished. No matter what the slightest movement, it would not escape Jonah's senses when he was on guard.
Should we try to anesthetize Kogoro Mouri? But it wouldn't be good if Jonah found out.
Should we anesthetize Jonah? Forget it, it's too strange to suddenly have Jonah do the deduction.
After a quick thought, Conan Edogawa abandoned the decision. He didn't know how to explain it if Jonah found out.
It seems that we can only activate Plan Two.
"Hey, Sister Xiaolan, look at the marks on this photo, don't they look like words?"
"Hmm, Conan, what did you find? Let me take a look."
