Chapter 13
Dilemma
"Let's go."
Guillermo led Caesar up to the second floor, which was almost like a ward, with several beds in each room and professional medical equipment.
"Don't be fooled by how many instruments we have; now that the power's out, they're completely useless. But the patients are still here."
"As long as the patient is still alive, they need to take medication. Our drug reserves ran out a long time ago."
Guillermo knew the base intimately, without considering whether he was exposing its vulnerability.
He can't think about the long term right now; he just wants to grasp at every straw that can save him.
After listening, Caesar stopped in his tracks and looked at Guillermo: "You've been talking for so long, and all you're saying is that you lack guns, medicine, and even food."
Guillermo nodded without hesitation.
When I'm speechless, I can actually laugh.
Caesar pointed to himself, "A pickup truck, and you want me to pay for all this?"
Guillermo pondered for a moment.
"Actually, we don't lack food, it's just that we haven't had normal food for a long time. We usually make do with simple meals from the supermarket and some foods that can be stored for a long time."
"Gun and medicine, let's say each is half and half."
Caesar waved his hand: "Stop dreaming."
"We don't have any medicine, but we can give you a few guns."
Guillermo immediately became anxious: "We absolutely need medicine; they won't last long without it."
"But I really don't have the medicine. The medicines these elderly people need can't be bought in regular pharmacies; they can only be bought in large hospitals."
"The risks are too high in big hospitals, and we've never been there, so naturally we can't collect the medications you need."
Caesar explained patiently.
Most of the elderly people here have chronic diseases, such as high blood pressure and diabetes. The pharmacies have very little stock of these medications, and they have long been sold out.
Otherwise, Guillermo wouldn't have asked Caesar for medicine; he could have just gone out and found it himself.
Guillermo lowered his head in disappointment and remained silent; he knew Caesar was telling the truth.
Because it was true, he found it hard to accept.
He couldn't accept that his incompetence led to the deaths of people in his team.
Caesar did not comfort him; this was something he had to go through.
The ratio of elderly people to young adults in the nursing home is two to one, which is extremely abnormal.
The old man was able to live entirely because the young and strong men went out to scavenge for resources.
With all the risks focused on young and middle-aged people, the probability of staff loss is naturally high, and the ratio of elderly people to young and middle-aged people in nursing homes will further deteriorate.
It's a vicious circle.
Caesar did not say anything about recruiting them.
Caesar understood that he had the ability to recruit this group of young and strong men, but he couldn't guarantee that so many old men would survive.
Food is manageable, but the biggest problem is medicine.
The area behind the sanatorium is very peaceful.
It was like a scene from the pre-apocalyptic world, with some elderly people sitting and enjoying the sunshine, while others were exercising with canes.
Some elderly people were reading books or playing cards.
Laughter filled the air with joy, and Caesar joined in, playing cards and chess with some of the older folks.
Caesar saw no fear of the end times in these old people.
Caesar didn't know if it was because they were old, had experienced too much and become indifferent to it, or because Guillermo had protected them too well and they didn't understand how terrible the outside world was.
"Guillermo, you need to find a new location."
Seeing Guillermo approaching, Caesar suppressed his smile and spoke seriously.
"What?" Guillermo didn't quite understand Caesar's meaning.
"This is a good place; there are few walkers, and it's easy to find supplies. However, where there are few walkers, there are many people."
"And people mean danger."
Caesar watched the laughter of the old men enjoying the last moments of their lives. "Some of them are just raiders. They don't find their own food; they hunt other groups and steal from them."
"I saw a group of guys called Woodbury in Atlanta."
"You're very likely to run into them."
Upon hearing Caesar's warning of the crisis, Guillermo realized the seriousness of the situation and nodded emphatically.
After thinking for a moment, Guillermo realized, "Oh right, your companions have arrived."
"Where are they?" Caesar asked.
"They were outside the door; they didn't come in."
Caesar chuckled inwardly, thinking, "So they really are in cahoots with me. I'm just wary."
The truck was full of supplies, and Ripp wasn't comfortable taking so many supplies into the wolf's den.
This is no different from a child carrying gold through the market.
The barbed wire fence opened, and Rip, standing in the doorway, suddenly turned around.
Beth, wearing a denim jacket and jeans, strode out.
"Hey cowboy, how have you been lately?"
Rip took off his sunglasses, an uncontrollable smile spreading across his face. He unconsciously looked up at the sky and down at the ground, but dared not look at Bass.
"I...I. Um, just like usual, feeding the horses, herding the cattle and sheep..."
Rip recounted his daily life in a dry, boring, and clumsy manner.
However, Bass listened with great interest, after all, it was quite interesting to watch the rough man rack his brains for her.
Thinking of this, Beth suddenly jumped and threw herself into Rip's arms.
Rip wrapped his arms around Beth's waist and his lips were instantly met with a storm of passion.
The two entangled, each kiss conveying the pain of longing and their worries for each other.
Jimmy stood there, staring intently as the two kissed.
Caesar called out in an annoyed tone.
Jimmy.
"Hmm." Jimmy snapped out of his daze.
"Your grandfather."
Caesar, pushing Grandpa Jimmy's wheelchair, reminded him helplessly.
Jimmy, with a smile on his face, jogged toward his grandfather.
Grandpa Jimmy, supporting himself in his wheelchair, slowly stood up, leaned on his cane, and hugged Jimmy.
Jimmy, I miss you so much~
Jimmy poured out his heart to his grandfather, crying and telling him about all the hardships he had endured.
Seeing their loved ones reunited and their lovers reunited, Andrea, Morales, and the others' resentment at returning to Atlanta dissipated considerably.
After seeing the above, Caesar, Rip, and the others were about to leave the sanatorium.
Although Grandpa Jimmy came to the nursing home later, he had a good relationship with most of the elderly people.
Grandpa Jimmy said goodbye to each of the elderly people: "See you in heaven."
See you in heaven.
The elderly residents of the nursing home all know that, given the current situation, this is very likely the last time they will see each other in their lives.
Grandpa Jimmy also said goodbye to those seemingly fierce and burly men. They all looked tall and strong, but they cried more and more than the other when faced with this parting.
The compensation that Caesar paid to Guillermo has been agreed upon, and several firearms and corresponding ammunition have been delivered.
Guillermo looked at Caesar earnestly: "You're not lying to me, are you?"
Caesar shook his head: "No."
Guillermo took a deep breath and accepted the cruel reality.
"You need to be prepared to face this kind of person; there are definitely many such people living in the apocalypse."
"You were just lucky to run into me this time."
"Caesar said."
Guillermo scoffed, "You're lucky you met me."
"I have several cars full of people, do you think I'm afraid of the two of you?"
